Have spent a lot of time in the special events, and these are really good, it actually adds something a bit special and different into the series.
Grand tour one is really nicely done, I really liked the cinematics between stages, where the driver changed vehicles, and also like , the rally events are good to, I like the way the stages are automatically generated, and always different.
All in all, that is the sort of stuff that should be in GT5, the rest of it, A spec races, and most of the cars just feel like you are playing GT4 with a slight graphically overhaul.
Real cars?, well, I've owned tons, trackday'ed a few, been driving for the best part of 20 years, owned, and trackday'd motorbikes too, also done a fair bit of karting over the years.
Toyed with the idea of racing numerous times, but finances get in the way, infact, I was taking a serious look at entering a racing series next year, got as far as quotes to prepare some cars, but still deciding if I can afford it.
Glass half empty?, maybe, but after 5 years, and countless buckets of polish later, GT5 should be the definitive next gen racer, and its not, its quite a long way from it, considering a game released over a year ago does the racing part better.
Its just an opinion, don't get bent out of shape by it, like I won't get bent out of shape if you think its the best thing since sliced bread.
There are 5 series, beginner, amateur, professional, expert and extreme, each of these (well, at least beginner, amateur and pro), 9 race series, so 5 x 9 is 45 series in total.
In theory you have 90 series, because all these are mirrored in B-spec too.
If you want some easy money, and easy XP, then the Nascar special events are very easy (at least the beginner and inter ones), you get a fair bit of cash and XP for them.
Also, first dip into online this morning, and it plays very well, quite like the "shuffle" idea too, where it shuffles the cars for the race, no money or XP to be made in online mode though.
Number of participants and track to start, then.....
Game mode : free run, shuffle race
Laps : 1-200
Start : Grid, Grid with false check
Grid order : Fastest first, slowest, Reverse based on previous results
Boost : No, low, high
Penalty : None, weak, strong
Grid reduction on wet edge, low, real
Car settings..
Unrestricted
Karts
F1
Select from garage
Tyre restrictions, all tyres
Force all aids off
There is no qualification, and it would appear that free run is endless
I also notice the "race quality" ranking, this would appear to give a rating out of 5 stars as to the quality and smoothness of the racing, must be a latency rating
You are forced to use a standard car very quickly.
@Boris.
If this were any other game than GT5, I'd agree with you, it would be a very quick, knee jerk score, but GT5 is pretty much the same game as GT has always been with a few bells and whistles on it, its in no way a new game.
Damn, some of the standard cars are really terrible, but I guess we already knew that, I bought a Celica for my starting car, nasty panel line textures, as opposed modeled ones.
Sounds, hmm.....well, standard cars aren't great, my celica sounds a bit like a vacuum cleaner, but its acceptable, and I think the premium ones sound better.
Graphically, I dunno, it feels odd, it doesn't really feel as "real" as prolouge did, it all feels a bit "bright and cartoony".
Physics, so far, so good, understeer is modelled well enough, although there is some quite odd weight transfer issues, rear end overtaking the front under braking is well over done, also, shifting is instant, in my celica any way, gear changes aren't realistic, it just press the button and the gear shifts instantly, like a sequential box.
Mixed bag for me, I know I'll be branded as a charlatan, and dragged naked down the high street, but for six years of work?, damn.......
So far 7/10, I won't go into comparisons..........
Edit, oh yeah, damage, well, currently, in my standard celica, at lvl1, there isn't any, nothing, nilch, nada, crashing headlong into a wall at 120mph, and it just shrugs it off with not a mark on the car.
Also, whats up with the crash effects?, an odd "plonk" sound, and the suspension goes up and down a bit.
Also, does the top gear test track "unlock"? because I can't find it to race in practice mode
Ok, I'll have to do it "on console", although I am going to disco from PSN while playing GT5 till tomorrow as it appears to cause a fair few issues ATM (servers undergoing maintainance etc)
