1: This is for security reasons and really isn't that difficult to set up.
2: Window mode in server browsing can be turned off.
3: I never even noticed 800x600 in looking for server screen and I've been playing for almost a decade.
4: You click on a server which brings you to a new screen where most servers will provide an additional set of rules before you decide if you actually want to join, this is a good feature.
5: A ghost car idea is terrible, LFS is not a Xbox game, if you don't want to deal with people crashing you then find a more respectable server or buy S2.
I have a question about the marketing...
Will LFS S3 be released like the others where word of mouth and 3rd party reviews of the game attract customers or is the LFS team going to attempt a big hit online simulator by means of a lot of marketing.
I'm pretty easy both ways but I'm thinking 3-4 years after the release would it be better to have a flood of new users at the beginning so that later on there will be more loyal clean racers online.

I tried Rigs of Rods, after walking around admiring the fantastic fluid motion I finally found a truck I could drive, I then realized I didn't even need to walk upto it, when I finally got in to drive it, I was informed that it had no differential, I pushed escape to return to the menu and the game closed.

I agree with OP, most racing games that take place in a big open city such as NFS Underground 2 or Midnight club L.A are an awesome concept, the only let down is the physics.
Racing through traffic, taking short cuts down ally ways or through shopping centers would be awesome if it carried with it the physics engine of a racing simulator.

Engine plays user sound.
Inspired by a thread I saw in the main section.
I think it would be pretty cool if the engine sound played was each users specific settings, could add a bit of individuality to the already personalized skins, perhaps a feature that could be turned on or off for some who feel as if it would get confusing.
I can't imagine that adding this would be too difficult as most of the data is already there but I'm no programmer.
What do you think?
