Oh ya bugger! LOL! I was only saying it as an example of how NFS is really arcadey compared to LFS...nowt else :-)

Make sure you leave the ricing at the door! We don't like it!
Just a few helpful hints: 1. Your driving style in LFS will need to be a lot different to the one you most likely used in NFS...ie you won't be able to throw say the FZ50 around like you could a 350Z (or equivalent) in NFS. The tyre model simply won't let you. Also, there aren't any options for adding spoilers and stuff, which would throw the balance of the cars out anyway :-D

Quote from tristancliffe :
These two points cancel out in my opinion, making the LFS gauge fairly real. BUT we also have the F12 menu for more accurate data. I'm hoping that we get a hardcore mode in which F9 is replaced with visible tyre condition, F10 is replaced with nothing, F11 is replaced with cockpit indicators and keyboard/wheel button shortcuts, and F12 is limited to a few setup choices (to replace pit radio/hand signals/shouting to mechanics in the pits).

Bloody good idea Tristan!

Quote from Funnybear :Celebrating the fact that our country was taken away from us? I find that insulting!!

Are you saying that the Americans didn't deserve to have their own country to live in? Times have changed since the British Empire was at its peak. The majority of Brits do not care HOW the USA gained independence, they only care that the people RUNNING that country at the moment are (if anything) destabilising entire regions of the world. As I stated before, this should not be pointed at the average American

The American's are as entitled to their Independence Day as we are entitled to celebrate St George's Day, St Patrick's Day etc. Please do not let anti-American feeling retract from the fact that many Americans are much more patriotic than any of us Brits will EVER be.

Quote from mrbogeyman :Just for once can we NOT turn this into an anti-American thread. It seems that anytime anyone mentions America they get on the good-old bandwagon and start abusing them.

This celebration is for the heritage of America and is celebrated by US citizens who have no real say about world affairs.

+1
The American people themselves should not be criticised for wanting to celebrate the fact that they are an independant nation, instead it should be the US Government that should take the criticism for invading Afghanistan and Iraq, which is something the average citizen had no say in whatsoever. I am sure the Americans on this forum will be feeling exactly the same way I am about this.

To the Americans: Happy 4th July! Well done for kicking our arses out of your country all those years ago ;-)

Yeah, but the names would (obviously) have to be typed in manually, I can't see a way of automating that.

[EDIT]When people attempt to join a server they are not on a whitelist for, a new list could be created with these names. Any frontend could use that list to transfer them to the whitelist.

A good idea in principle, but as said if there is a semi-publc server (ie a big multi-server league) that wanted to use this then the list would get awfully big, and as I see it it would have to be added to manually, as well.

Ello Scawen,
I ran the space_to_crash program on Vista, and i got the same address as you, 004011d0.
John
EDIT: When i pressed the space bar Vista kicked in, and prevented me from getting any new address that may have been generated.

During a race, hit F12 before pitting. Use up down left and right buttons to change options. You have quite a few things you can change to your setup, but obviously not the things that you'd have to retire from the race in real life. Then, when you make your next pit those changes will be made to your car.

The setup changes do add time to the pit stop that you THEN make, to effect the changes you've requested. All in all, more or less exactly what you're suggesting is actually there already

Quote from faster111 :Am just saying why its power go down is because of the new car.other cars in s2 there powers gone down to right? so its all linking up to the new car but if anyone can find out that has not hppen tell yous now plase cause am sure thats whats happen.

After throwing your comment through a gibberish translation site (Thanks Google) I have the following comment:
LFS is not about one car "stealing" power from another, it is about being able to have cars with different drivetrains being able to compete with each other. Some people do not LIKE driving rear wheel drive cars, and would much prefer a car like the XFG, whereas others love to get the back end sliding out, and so prefer rear wheel drive cars. So no, the XFG didn't have its power reduced because of the BF1, it had it power reduced to make races between itself and the XRG closer.

There are a few main aspects of a race that can affect the strategy that can be taken, and these are all inter-related. The first of these is the actual car and track combination that is used, for example a track like Aston Grand Prix with a car like the BF1 will use a lot more fuel than a combination like Aston Cadet in the MRT. As the tracks get longer, the races tend to increase in length with them, and so more pit stops are usually required.
The next aspect to think about is tyre wear. This ties in with the car and track combination, as a car such as the XFR will eat tyres for breakfast, and cars like the MRT and the GTR's seem to be lighter on the tyres. The compound of the tyre is also important, as a GTR on R4's will last well into the 30's lapwise, whereas R2's (yes I know I am going extreme here) will be mashed after 6 or 7 laps. Also, If you go for R4's be wary of what the temperature of your tyres tells you. The tyres undergo wear whatever temperature they are at, and whereas with R3's and below you can tell when a tyre is dead simply by looking at it's temperature, with R4's you can be perfectly inside the optimum temperature range, but your tyres can still be on the brink of bursting.
This also leads to another aspect involving tyre wear: the fuel load in the car. Higher fuel loads increase the weight of the car, and this in turn increases the forces on the tyres, increasing the wear that the tyre imposes, meaning that you have to pit more often for tyres. Add this to a car like the XFR, and you have a recipe for disaster.
All these aspects affect the strategy that can be taken, and so I am not going to answer the poll question, as there is no one answer.

Quote from bal00 :From what I've read LFS ties the unlock to the specific computer, so it presumably uses some relatively static information about the system like hardware, partition sizes etc. to do so.

Maybe it can't collect this information due to changes in the interface in Vista or receives some unexpected values (Windows version number for example). Of course this is just speculation, but since you seem to be able to connect to the master server to pull the (demo) server list, it doesn't sound like it has anything to do with connectivity or firewalls.

I am also starting to think it is something to do with the version number of Vista (which is not a standard version). Maybe the Master Server is only expecting version numbers from existing versions of Windows (eg 5.1.2600 for Windows XP), and since Vista is a Beta the Master Server does not recognise this as a version of Windows. I could be talking utter rubbish here, but it is a theory to add to the list.

Nope, that was on my copy of XP that I am dual booting with, I am afraid. Still not solved the problem, I have tried several times now, and it seems to be a Vista problem, unfortunately. Looks like I will just have to wait for M$ to sort it out.

Nope. Windows Firewall was the first thing to be turned off, as I am connected to a wireless router.
I can join Demo servers, and race, but when it comes to unlocking I seem totally unable to do anything.

Hiya all,
I am using Windows Vista Beta 2, and seem unable to unlock LFS on it. The only error message I recieve is "Unlocking Error" and LFS remains unlocked. I do not know whether this is a problem with Vista, or an incompatability between LFS and Vista. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
John

EDIT: I have one spare unlock available according to the LFS website

Quote from NotAnIllusion :*Oh yeah, and what happens when more than one person plays LFS on the same PC, but only one is an intentional wrecker? For example if the kid brother's a bit of a tosser but the big bro is quite clean a driver.

Big bro unzips LFS to a different location and leaves that locked, passwords his PC, and prevents bro using the unlocked LFS using security options built into the NTFS file system

Quote from P5YcHoM4N :And I also noticed that being a patriot is only a bad thing if you're English and one. I mean, what the hell. It's racist and offencive to fly the St. Georges over here thanks to the Political Correctness. I was told my passport was offencive because it was in a St Georges case. How the feck does that work?

I have to agree with you on that point, Political Correctness has gone way too far during the past few years, I blame Blair myself...

The St George's flag is simply saying "I am proud to be English". The Americans are all too happy to pronounce their love for their country by having their flag everywhere, so why can't we do the same, and show out loyalty to everything that is English (and to a wider extent, British)

Quote from P5YcHoM4N :I can't stand new cars anyway. They are all getting more and more ugly as they go. I'll take a classic over a sports car of today.

This is true also, lately I saw a picture of a beautiful Vauxhall Velux from the 50's, and all i can say to that is PHWOAR! Has to be the most beautiful car I've ever seen.

Thet doesn't, however, mean that ALL new cars are awful, or any more ugly. The Lotus Elise (not particularly new, but hardly to be considered old) is, IMHO, a fantastic looking car, and puts many older cars to shame in every aspect. In general though, your point does hold

Quote from P5YcHoM4N :Errmmm... some of the most kick ass vehicals have been made here. Plus English enginers kick the shit out of Americans for one main reason. The last Batmobile.

You can't claim that the UK car industry is any better than the american one because of one car, it is over the whole range that you need to compare.

The Americans have also produced some kickass cars recently, take the Ford GT for example. That has done away with the apparent lack of cornering ability of American cars, and it is also a beautiful looking car. In fact (for Brits) Jeremy Clarkson even bought one, and he hates American cars, and American motor companies.
Strange Dual-Screen Config

Does anyone know if it is possible to combine a widescreen monitor and a "square" one in LFS to form a dual screen configuration? If so will the possible resolutions appear in LFS?
Cheers
John

EDIT: The resolutions of the monitors are 1440x900 and 1200x900 respectively

All I can say about the patch is WOW!
The tyre physics changes have helped a lot with driving the LX6 and RA, which have always been hard to control, and also make the rest of the cars much better to drive.
The BMW Sauber , IMO, is a step in the right direction for the Devs. The data from the F1 team must have helped in general with the tyre updates, and the car itself is excellently done.
The digital font could do with a little improvement, as the times are a little hard to read off, and it can distract from racing, but other than that the font is good.
The new aston configs are brilliant, Grand Touring is excellent for driving the BF1 and the GTR's round, and North is good for the FOX and the XFR. All in all, I'm happy with them.

The whole patch is excellent, and it's very much the way to go for the sim, and let's hope the Dev's do as good a job on the clutch pask and AI
