Not to mention that every car seems to lag a lot at the start of a full grid race.

All of that when playing on a patch V server even with a good old patch U client. You can notice the difference when playing on a patch =< U30 server.

Loading the raw files you'll have to try mono and stereo - but all the old LFS raw files are 44100 Hz 16-bit.

Back to the topic, I've just made some tests on some U32 servers and I'm a bit disappointed to see that there is still the ability to pit in lap 0
This is a major issue for races with forced pit stop and I really hope that it'll be fixed for patch V

Yep, race events should have the priority over new connections IMO.

And especially for the start sequence, no new connection should be allowed untill the race has started.

You get a 30 seconds penalty if you pit on last lap.
But in this case this is not a pit stop but a penalty stop.

10 laps race with forced pit stop.

If you pit in lap 9 and get a stop and go penalty because of overspeed in pit lane, it's not possible to achieve the stop and go penalty in last lap.

You enter the pits at the correct speed, stop at the correct place, but nothing happens, you just got a DNF.

I have noticed this behaviour as well but, for some reason, it especially often occurs on Westhill track and rarely on Aston track (with FZR).
I am not using any key assignment script, only the in-game built-in settings.

It has nothing to do with my wheel because the same behaviour occurs even when using the default keyboard L key. And even if the car is parked on the track / stopped inside pit box.

I've also played a lot of Joint Strike Fighter and even won a digital joystick in a world contest as I've finished third after fighting for 10 hours non stop
Afterburner was really fun too but more an arcade game than a simulation.

I've not tried many recent flying sims but Falcon 4.0 Allied Force the remake of original Falcon 4.0 is great and is a simulation.

Shouldn't be a problem in most cases but in case of troubles try to use the Windows 98 compatibility mode: right click the .EXE file -> Properties -> Compatibilty tab
In case of a dual core processor assign the process to only one of the cores.

Indeed. GPL was and still is a great sim, one of the best games I've played.

There is still a GPL community and there are even graphics, cars and tracks updates. And also some online racing
