Whether more appropriate or not, BMW is using some kind of generated or pre-recorded sound like most games do. It says in there that it plays a sound through your stereo that is pitched depending on what the ECU says the engine is doing.
I work for an industrial design consultancy firm. We mostly deal with action sports equipment, like snowboard and motocross gear, for some very recognizable names. I must say that it's quite a sweet deal, especially compared to how abysmal all the rest of the industrial design in Toronto is; this city's ID is mostly all display and exhibit design, which is boring as all hell.
I've spent a not-too-inconsiderable amount of time over the last few months working on snowboard goggles, boots, gloves, bindings... Interesting stuff!
I can't really complain about my pay, either. I just graduated in April with my Bachelor's and I'm making $20/hour right now. Not amazing, but definitely could be worse. I was also the first person in my class to land a job at all, and to date I only know of four people that have been hired somewhere since the end of the program (one or two retained their internship positions from last summer, but those don't count! )
Speaking of ladies... I've designed several devices used by millions of ladies worldwide (They're not as much fun to work on as you might think...)
Just saw this posted up on Autoblog. Apparently the new 2012 BMW M5 has some kind of engine sound played through the stereo of the car. Not sure exactly what to think of it (I guess it depends on the motives/needs for such a system?) but its brings me to a question:
They claim it gives a perfect audible indication of the engine load. Obviously that is not possible with pre-recorded engine samples (as most of the hardcore racers here know). Do you think their system uses an on-the-fly generation system akin to LFS? If so, do you think their system will provide a better, more detailed and realistic sounding experience than what LFS offers?
In the event that this is some kind of proprietary generation system, what are the chances you think that some of the research could find its way into other consumer outlets (LFS, for instance)?
It's a good start, but I think everything looks a bit too "clinical." Brand new refreshed paving or not, it looks too perfect. Nothing in real life looks that way. I think the red parts are too saturated, too; red is quite hard to get right, though. The highlights and shades that break up the bricks and rumble strips look too much like the bevel and emboss style in photoshop, too; too perfect. They don't seem to have enough depth, either. Also, your bricks are missing the "grout" between them (not sure what the construction equivalent is called).
I'm fine with losing the music, that's easy, it's just the aps and such that I don't want to lose from it if I update it on another's system. I guess it's worth a shot.
Is it possible to update an iPhone on someone else's computer without losing all your data? I'm getting the phone within the next few days (so long as the provider stops jerking me around) because I can't wait for iOS5, my current phone is on its last legs (a plethora of problems... most annoying of which is that the 4 button doesn't work, which means I can't dial ANY number in toronto since all of our area codes have 4s in them, or send any texts containing the letters G, H or I). If I can just update the firmware on someone else's computer that has iTunes when iOS5 comes out then that'll work fine, I just won't update it until then. I'd imagine that will cause me to lose all my data, though?
What if that other computer is the only computer it ever gets synced to through iTunes, will it make a backup of it for me even if it's used for another phone as well, so I can keep all the settings/data/etc when it updates?
So I'm getting an iPhone soon, and I was wondering if it was possible to update the phone without iTunes installed? I really dislike it, and I know of several ways to sync the phone without it, but I want to be able to update the phone when new updates come out. Is this possible without some big long hacking process? I've come across one method, but it requires iTunes to be installed anyways, which completely defeats the purpose.
Well, I finished my thesis, got an awesome job pretty much right out of school (I design snowboard and motorcross equipment), I live in a sweet brand new condo and I still have a little bit of my last paycheque in my bank account. Still working on the vacation...
There's supposed to be a Hunt movie as well, isn't there? (In addition to the one about the Lauda/Hunt rivalry)
Also, has anyone heard anything about that 30's grand prix TV series being done by the Wachowski siblings? Heard about it last year and not a thing since.
[EDIT] Maybe not TV series, but short run televised series about the era, and maybe not the Wachowskis...
Can anyone explain the track maker? Is it a standalone creation tool, or do you need to build it in 3DS or some other program and then use it to import?
I'm thinking of picking it up, I tried the demo again a few months ago and it felt alright, interested in trying the rest of it.
The coma thing could be an interesting game mechanic in another game, but as it stands it's turning the Driver series into something it never was in the beginning.
I whole-heartedly agree with Quicksilver. I want Driver 1 (or 2) with modern graphics, steering wheel support and more cars, and more cities. That (those) game (games) was (were) incredibly fun, and had by far the best cop chases of any game ever made.
It's on its way according to the site. I forgot about Zandvoort, though, that's another reason to get in... There some some really cracking circuits in iR.
If I find out tomorrow that I'm getting hired full time here (fingers crossed!) I might just go and get myself the year subscription and give this thing a go again... So many tasty bits about it... Like Mosport, and Zolder, and VIR...
Yup, bugs at night too. LOTS of them, in fact. Especially by lakes, which I used to bike along almost exclusively (the breeze/wind off of Lake Ontario is refreshing, despite the disgustingness of the water...).
Typically if I was out at night, though, it was more in the twilight hours rather than actual night time, and I was on my way home after a ride.
I've had issues with having programs like RBR load up on the secondary monitor (tried before, didn't seem to work?) which is why I have it set up as I do now. I can try to do that, but I still want icons on both screens.
Curiously, today, it booted up with everything as I have it set normally. I'm not sure what exactly is going on but everything was where I wanted it today. I'm lost haha
Yea, my friend's boyfriend owns one of the units in the condo closest to the track. He used to watch from his balcony, until he moved to Runnymede. Still owns the unit, though, he just rents it out now. We can hear the cars from our building, just can't see
I use both monitors while I'm on the computer, and I have my icons set up where they make sense for the way I use the computer. I have the primary monitor set the way it is because I want full-screen programs (like LFS, RBR, etc) to open on that monitor and have my start bar on my other screen. Most of my icons are on the primary monitor, but some of the icons (mostly games and seldom-used utilities) are on the other monitor. This is how I like my desktop setup, and I want to continue to do so. I had no problems with XP, but 7 won't let me do it.
Usually the monitors gets turned off when I put on music while my girlfriend and I are enjoying eachother's company or when I leave the computer on when I go out (torrents downloading or whatever other reason it's left running).
Either way, motivations for doing so aren't important; I just want 7 to stop this nonsense. There has to be a setting somewhere for it ?
