Am I right in thinking that to display a simple 'server status' and/or 'racers on server' page requires pulling in the data for every server and then discard the unwanted stuff?
Add an ingame indicator (F12?) to show if the server is Public or Private.
We occasionally make our server private on the fly but have often forgot to make it public again after we've finished a session. Because we all have the server password included as part of the connection we can all reconnect the next time without realising we've still got a private server. It's only when someone realises that no guests have joined that the penny drops.
Favicons are excellent when they're displayed but IE in particular often 'forgets' to display them.
I remember looking into this some years ago and found there were tools dedicated to helping browsers to remember to display them. Still very hit-and-miss though.
If possible we would like someone to produce a server-side InSim program to allow the following functionality ...
We want to be able to manually set the time that needs to elapse before the next race automatically starts and for that time to be displayed as a countdown for everyone to see. We would like any admin to be able to utilise this function. We would like the countdown timer to be near the top of the screen so as not to obscure the view of anyone practicing (see format below). The last 30 seconds of the countdown will see the countdown timer removed from the screen to be replaced by the standard RCM message for a race starting but with the timer counting down from 30. The race will automatically start at the end of those 30 seconds.
The available commands will be prefixed with a dollar sign.
$racex
Where x is the number of seconds before the next race automatically starts and can have a value between 60 and 600. This command has no effect if a countdown is already running. If a countdown is running any votes to restart or qualify are ignored by LFS and the 'Vote Cancelled' message is displayed.
$pause
This will pause/unpause the countdown timer. It has no effect if a countdown is not running. An additional flashing display will indicate that the countdown is paused.
$cancel
This will cancel any countdowns and remove all displays from the screen. It has no effect if a countdown is not running.
The countdown timer display should contain some additional useful info and would ideally look like this:
If this program could also include the excellent 'Driver Briefing' function found in burnsy1882's lfsservercontrol then that would be an added bonus.
Dead Men Racing are part of the Dead Men Walking gaming community and, as such, are not structured like most teams in LFS. Membership, for example, is by invitation only and we only invite racers who have consistently demonstrated a mature attitude to racing. Skill levels are not important. When members are invited we make it very clear to them that the dMr tag makes them ambassadors of mature, clean and fair racing. When you see someone wearing the dMr tag you *know* they will race hard and fair.
Our Server
Our server is public and it's busiest between 8pm and 10pm GMT. We have ...
Forced Cockpit View = ON
Wind = ON
Pit Stop = ON
Just look for 'Dead Men Racing' on the server browser.
Our Racing
We structure our racing in one week cycles. A different car/track combo is chosen for each week and we round the week off with a one hour race on that combo. The 'Long Race' is on Thursdays at 8:30pm with a 20 min qualy starting at 8pm (all times GMT/BST). The server is made private shortly before qualy ends so no late joiners. We have recently introduced a 'Team Racing' event on Sunday evenings. Drivers are paired up by PB with the fastest paired with the slowest, second fastest with second slowest etc. Each racer drives half the laps and everybody uses the Race_S setup. This has proved to be great fun but does require our server to be made private so if you fancy joining us then you will need to sign up on our forum for the server password. In addition I can't stress enough how much more fun racing is when Ventrilo or Teamspeak is used. We prefer Ventrilo and use it at all times. Details, again, are on our forum.
Our general race durations tend to be around the 15 minute mark. When the race ends do not expect to see the next race start immediately. We normally have a break of about 5 minutes for bladders to be emptied, glasses to be filled and setup tweaks to be tested so please: be patient, keep the track clear and resist the urge to vote. Remember: quality not quantity.
Our Admins
We have a zero-tolerance policy regarding 'numpties'. We try very hard to ensure that our guests are provided with the best racing experience we can deliver and we refuse to let the reckless actions of others spoil that. However, we all make mistakes. So if you feel that an admin has dealt with you harshly then please take it to our forum where I can guarantee a mature response to your complaint.
Your Experience
You have a large choice in where to race so why give us a try? Well because you'll be hard pushed to find a friendlier well-run public server to race on where speed around the track plays second fiddle to mature people having clean, fair and fun racing. When you leave our server we want you to be thinking 'That was fun' and we hope that will make you a regular.
Hi Delray. By all means drop in for a race. We define 'mature' as an attitude and try not to tie it to age. Our server is busy between 8pm and 10pm (GMT) and, if you're up for some witty banter, then we also use a Ventrilo server to <cough> congratulate </> the speedy.
That's good news. Server admins need a reliable stats package to produce live race results. Gai-Luron has done an excellent job resurrecting LFSstats but it would be great to have a choice.
