Quote from Nathan_French_14 :http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/2412384.htm

I'd advise against a Mondeo Mk3. The rear subframes like to ruin their bushes, the last one that came in where I worked was an '02, had only done round town miles, around 65k for an 8 year old car it wasn't very high and the bushes had failed on the MoT. The only replacement bushes come in a whole new subframe package, which is around £1,200 worth of metal. Add labour on top and you can see why a lot of them had an early grave. I'd make sure there are after market bushes which slide in (is it PolyFlex everyone bangs on about?) available if you want a Mk3.

Quote from Nathan_French_14 :[Laguna Stuff]

Having worked on a few Lagunas from the last 8 years, the biggest problem with them is Renault made a lot of parts to destructively sacrifice themselves if the engine meets requirements which _could_ result in disaster. One of the cars I had in had blown most components of intake and exhaust and had broken the camshaft fail safe, if a piston hits a valve the stress snaps a small pin which turns the cam into a free wheeler. Took an age to sort out, most because I was unaware of this until that point. And the engine bay is very inaccessible. I had to remove damn near all of the front end to get to where I needed to be and for one Laguna I had in, the book said you had to remove the front of the car (bumpers, grills, cross members, etc) which made a rad change every expensive.

[edit: Just remembered there are also a few parts on the engine which WILL break when you take them off, which is annoying if you've just fitted a new part then find you have to remove it again to get to something else as it will break so you have to get another one. EGR springs to mind as a prime candidate.]

Quote from Nathan_French_14 :[Focus Stuff]

A bit of injector cleaner goes a long way with the Focus diesel, but the engines are tanks, they will out live the body (thanks to Fords being rust prone). The biggest issue I've every come across is the EGR getting bunged up (a blast down the motorway with high revs for about 30 minutes is the Ford way of fixing that problem) and the turbo shitting the bed.

Quote from Nathan_French_14 :A larger car does not necessarily mean a larger insurance premium.

This is very true, as insurance involves a lot of numbers in a hat, a unusual car that Barry won't have had many crashes in will bring down your premiums as you're suddenly a smaller risk than if you hopped in a Corsa or something of the sort.

Quote from Jakg :(don't look at the ZR / ZS - much more to insure. And much, much worse).

How much of a fanboy are you? The ZS is the best of the Z range. It borrows it's floor plan from the Honda Accord so has double wishbones all around, setup for a slightly sporty car and if you look around you can get one with the Honda engine (easy to spot as it is in backwards), so you can enjoy petrol fun and not worry about the head imploding like you get on the K-Series.

The ZR and ZT are the worst of the range for sporty characteristics, the latter being like trying to race around in a barge, chuck in the heavy diesel lump and you're understeering everywhere. The only advantage to the ZT is Barry hasn't molested many of them so you can still get one in original spec.

That all said, you have to be stupid to by a Rover in drag.

Quote from S14 DRIFT :I know, I've had a happy 2850 miles on it, it's breaking me to sell it. Really, It's going to destroy my life and future plans but if I don't get another car I will lose my job.

What is wrong with your Corsa for work? You could undo the mods, probably £150-200 down the scrappy will put it back to standard.

Quote from S14 DRIFT :Hey hey cheeky! I looked on ebay for these but they're all about £5000 so the same price as a Focus and most have been crashed, thrashed and abused. Get your point though, but I had enough stick from my corsa at work, if I rocked up at work in a van, they would lay into me and I'd kill myself.

I got nothing but kudos when I started rocking a van. Mostly because it had a mattress in the back. But at your age everything will be expensive to insure, so you might as well just go nuts and get a Range Rover P38 (slush box because the manual box sucked). You can get a very good one for 2.5-3k, you're looking at about the same to insure it. Jobs a good'en.

Quote from S14 DRIFT :Due to some reasons, I am buying a new car.

I am selling my beloved Street Triple R in order to buy it. I will have around £6000 to buy/insure a car.

The hell? You've only had it 2 minutes. You haven't even finished breaking in the engine.

If you want cheap to insure, you have to get yourself a commercial vehicle (pickup, van, tractor, etc), as you are only charged basic rates so you're not put out of business and most modern CDVs will come with all of the same gear as their back seated windowed friends.

Now if your condom burst, then that won't be much use unless you get something like a Berlingo, or the Transit Connect Crew, as it is a mini-minibus. Plus they come with all the mod cons you'd find in any other Ford Product these days, so good headunit that you can plug your MP3 player into, cruse control, airbags, aircon, etc.

Would you know it there are two types of fuel filter for the Escort Van and the place I used gave me the wrong sort. They won't be open now until Monday and I only decided to do the service because my fuel filter is buggered.

Quote from speedway :I'm still hoping it will never be released, since I'm pretty sure it will just be another half-arsed game that only carries a big title. And in the end I will be asking myself "Did I really wait 15 years for this shit?"

If you don't want to see the result, look away now.

You will be. It will be a mediocre game at best with a lot of hype (that'll make it worse). The first results will be along the lines of "wow, that sucked."

Quote from dawesdust_12 :They did, but then Gearbox bought the rights to DNF from 3d realms, and then.. well.. finished it

Right, that explains a lot then. Like why I thought Gearbox didn't sound right. Do you think it shows I haven't followed the market for a while?

At least they actually finished it though. 3DR were just being too anal about "their baby" and got to the point where it got so hyped up it had to be perfect and would never get finished. Because as tech evolved the game got left behind.

I did Internet/Networking, so it looked at building networks, the back end of websites, stuff like that. In the first lecture we was told what bandwidth really means and what people use it to mean and that we'd use it for the latter to save confusion. :/
She mostly blamed the American's for misusing the word to start with, which lead to the common error now. But then as I recalled she blamed the American for everything.

Quote from Shotglass :considering my line is something like 3km long i doubts it more than a couple hundred khz

seriously wtf? its bad enough to rape the term bandwidth and use it as if it meant data rate (and would give profs ample reason to personally headbutt any students who makes that mistake back into the first semester) but using it for traffic wtf?

I used to argue about the misuse of the term, but that was until I went to uni where the professors used bandwidth incorrectly too. I gave up all hope then as it was like pissing up a rope from then on.

Quote from bunder9999 :oh, get off your soapbox... i don't seed either for a few reasons...
[snip]

When you download close to 200GB, you need to put back more than 4GB. General overheads will take up most of that.

I realise not everyone can do 1:1, but 50:1 is an outrageous value and there is no excuse for it.

A lot of people still use private trackers because you get good seeders on them. One of the places I know has a rolling ratio, the more you download the better your ratio needs to be, so that way even the most obscure item is still available at decent speed.

Of course it could all be legal downloads (like iPlayer), in which case it isn't an issue as there is nothing to return, but I'd put a wager on where most of that bandwidth was spent and that makes it selfish Internet use.

I remember when a lad at uni got a BMW 3-series coupé. Was singing it's praises how fast it was and such. It was a base level 1.8l 4pop, deemed so slow by BMW it had drum brakes in the rear.

You're better equipped than you think. I used stuff I had floating around the house until I actually got some good equipment.

Push ups with a backpack loaded with a bunch of baked bean tins makes a good start, more so if you raise your legs as it forces more weight onto your arms.

When you're doing sit ups if you hold say a laptop against your chest, most weigh about 2kilo, it isn't much but makes a difference. If you have some weights floating around, then use ~10-20 kilo, works wonders. Or if you're feeling brave, 50kilo is bloody fantastic for quick results. Painful the next morning though.

[edit: Those little benches are great, there is a lot you can do on them if you get creative.]

If you're getting stuck at a weight, force yourself to go higher, you might only be able to do 3 or 4 reps at a time, but if you keep going back, pausing for a minute or so in-between, you'll force your muscles to work and you'll be able to do more and more reps.

Doing 10-20 reps of 30 is great if you want to tone up. If you want to build on strength/bulk up, you have to push your body and force the muscles to their limits. You're actually tearing them, that is what builds stronger muscles.

200GB a month is still quite a bit (around 7GB a day) and a lot more than BT used to offer.

I was quite lucky when I was on NTL/Virgin as I'd always turn down speed upgrades (every upgrade came with bandwidth limits), eventually I'd get the upgrade anyway but got to keep unlimited. By the time I moved last June I had 10MB with unlimited bandwidth and no FUP. If I'd taken the upgrades (which many of my friends did), I'd have had FUP and/or bandwidth limits.

Right now I am using Post Office, which has no limits or FUP of any kind, but the free router/modem then give you is Czech crap which quits it's job every 30 seconds so it'd be impossible to rack up any sort of usage anyway.
