Don't know about the social services or laws in the USA, but from a human perspective this is a clear-cut case of abuse. Psychological abuse. Less scars, but just as damaging. Your gf should get out of there. (And her mom should get psychological help. She's probably an abuse victim herself. But that's another story.)
f4sttr@ck, get some legal advice. From a certain age, a child can decide to live on its own (or with anyone she chooses), and if that age is 16, that may be helpful. If the law gets involved, perhaps you should register the abuse that has taken place, and the consequences. For instance, a medic or psych could have a look at the scars from cutting herself. Build a file.
And you should try to talk her out of "if I leave then ma will die". I expect her mom has told her so, many times. It's emotional blackmail, and part of the abuse. Even if the lady's health was that bad, there should be other people who can help: relatives, or professional workers. Ultimately, your gf has to choose to save her mom's life, or her own.
You: I'd like to have my eyes measured, to see if my glasses need to be replaced.
Optometrist: Certainly. Can I measure your current lenses?
You: Sorry, I left them at home. I don't wear them constantly. Can't remember their strength.
Optometrists provide these services for free, because they make a huge profit when you actually buy something. (And sooner or later you will. That's the certainty of growing old. )
I've read through the whole thread now. I've seen arguments about the real or imaginary dangers. But one big question remains unanswered for me: do these substances improve your life? (If not, why bother?)
It's a serious question. I've never done any drugs or alcohol, which (especially the latter) made be a big exception in my Uni years. I've been asked many times why I didn't drink. My reply was "why should I?", and I've never heard a satisfactory answer to that.
I'm pretty sure you're holding the chart upside down.
Exactly. The whales are all for global warming. It will give them more water to swim in, and the biggest bonus of all: wipeout of human civilization. Yay!
.. and for showing how crappy airport security is, they deserve to be punished?
No, it isn't. The majority gets to decide, but the majority should not unnecessarily tread on the interests of the minority. That's why we have anti-discrimination laws: to protect the minority from the foolishness of the majority. And that's why the transition to Nazi rule in Germany in 1933, even though taken by majority vote in the Reichstag, was morally wrong.
There have at least been 2 cases. One was a girl who took a sexy pic of herself and mailed it to friends. The other was a couple who filmed themselves while making love, and then she mailed the movie to her lover. All persons were under 18, and were found guilty of possessing child porn. The lawmakers never thought there could be kids making pictures of themselves, and the judges wouldn't or couldn't dismiss the case as being totally ridiculous.
For a moment I thought that the last question was asked by the girl.
My contribution:
A rabbit walks into a bakery, and asks the owner: "Do you fell any drugf?"
The owner, surprised: "No, I'm sorry. We have no drugs. This is a bakery."
The rabbit leaves.
Next day, the rabbit is back and asks again: "Do you fell any drugf?"
The owner again says no. But when the rabbit has left, he starts to think. It might be a good idea to make some extra money, so he goes to the big city and buys some marihuana.
The third day the rabbit is back again: "Do you fell any drugf?"
The owner rubs his hands. "Yes, we have just got a fresh supply of..."
The rabbit holds up its badge. "Polife. You're under arreft."
Blinding people with lights only works when you drive at night (which is impossible in LFS). Besides, on a race track very few people drive in the opposite direction.
If you want to take other drivers out, you should crash them. It's much more reliable. (But don't blame me if you get banned.)
If you try to follow a raceline that stems from a WR hotlap, then you won't survive the first turn... Unless you have alien-like driving skills, but then you don't need a raceline anyway.
A raceline is driving advice for people who don't know the combo yet. The line had better NOT be one that drives the car on the very limit.
If the dog was already dead, then perhaps the other dog wasn't really rescuing a friend, but rather getting itself a good meal. :schwitzWell, they do look like feral street dogs.)
Where did you find those figures? I heard that the DNA of chimpanzees is 98% identical to ours. (BTW, does this mean that halibuts can climb trees? Or that a chimp eating a banana is almost committing cannibalism? )
More seriously, you shouldn't be surprised if we share a large part of our DNA with plants and bacteria. Most genes seem to encode for the basic chemistry of the cell. Add to that the fact that 95% is junk DNA that doesn't seem to encode for anything, and the differences become very small indeed. (Alternatively, you might also say that these similarity figures are bloody useless. :razz
Another interesting hole in DNA fingerprinting is chimerism, as in the case of Lydia Fairchild. She appeared to have differents sets of DNA in her tissues, and tests indicated that she was not the mother of her children.
Not really. Communicating state changes of the environment is done in many online games. LFS already does it, to some extent: moving track objects like cones and tire stacks. Your car can collide with a loose tire that was moved by another car.
The most difficult part is probably integrating all those influences into a believable physics model.
In most cases, the changes will be fairly slow: rain, marbles and dust build up and disperse slowly. It may also be feasible to spin out on oil spilled by the car that is right in front of you. The only case that seems too hard (computationally) is hitting flying debris.
