The way I see it if a mod has been officially approved and is available via the game itself then that should also be high quality piece of content. Makes no sense to officially review quick hack jobs and people don't want to download crap either. Being official mod should be a seal of quality in itself. Even if that is also somewhat subjective.
So official mods should be tested for high quality and legality. This also means there needs to be a precise check list so people know beforehand what is required BOTH from legality point of view and quality pov. Here is a check list proposal:
- (current requirements)
- official category content needs to support all of lfs features (when applicable, single seaters don't have headlights for example)
- must be your own work (with proofs and permissions)
- be of high quality: visual + physics + audio + ai + template + setup
- must have a discussion forum thread
Any hackjobs, pure engine mods etc. should be rejected outright.
One thing I was wondering when I first heard about lfs modding was how modded lfs content would be handled. It seems making mods out of official content (brands and 3d models) is okay? To me that sounds like its own category: Upgrades.
But that is its own rabbit hole that can go pretty deep. If there was a way to make upgrades as pure non-3d then those could be treated the same way as autocross layouts. And those would not even need to be reviewed. Ideally people would be able to use upgraded cars with the base cars on same server as well.
These upgrades should be possible for all official lfs cars AND approved mods.
I'm not sure if allowing 3d derivative works on official content is good idea. Official mods should be fully new and original work. Upgrades should be those tiny mods that just change engine power for example. LFS cars should be off limits just like real brands.
You have until 13th of march to post your predictions. After that date your posts will be gleefully ignored.

* Power unit parts limit is 15 per driver, for honda this is 60 for 2 teams and 4 drivers. Last season honda had limit of 30 and they used 74: https://maxf1.net/en/2018-f1-power-unit-elements-usage/
The fins help keep the airflow perpendicular to the wing. In straightline there is small loss in downforce and increase in drag because you have little less wing area and more structures in the air. But in corners the fins improve the downforce loss (you lose less downforce). And because rally cars go more sideways that loss at smaller angles is less than what you gain at higher angles. Cars that go more straight go to the opposite direction. See the swan neck rear wing mounts for example.
I really dislike fuel limits because it will always lead to fuel saving. It is usually faster to take something like 5% of the fuel off the car and then save little bit during the race instead of drive hard and carry that extra 5% all the way through the race. Maybe just force everybody to take 100% fuel always?
I'm not too sure about the fuel flow limitation either. Again it gimps the cars at the end of the straights where they'd need that fuel. It is better solution than too low rpm limits (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yPDN_ZKMniE) but not very good.
Maybe those 3 litre V12s could work if you gave them 174 kilogram fuel tanks . I actually did a little calculation. Using this number here: http://www.mwerks.com/artman/publish/features/printer_982.shtml. It says 80l/100km fuel consumption although honestly I don't know if that number is even on the ballpark. Race length is 310 kilometers so 248 litres ~ about 0,7 kg/l = 174kg.
Aero is an issue but personally I'd really want to get rid of the hybrid engines. That is the biggest issue in f1 imho. The power output is just wrong for racing. When all the power is dumped on corner exits and then you drive with far less power to the end of the longest straight and coast to save fuel for the last 200 metres it is no wonder why passing is difficult. The cars are gimped by power in the position of the track they'd need most of it to try to overtake. And the cars use most of the power in the part of the track which hurts overtaking the most.
The big power numbers on corner exit also hurt overtaking chances because big acceleration numbers make the straights shorter in time because your average speed is higher. If the engine output was more constant from exit of corner until the next braking zone the acceleration would be lower in the beginning which would put more emphasis on slipstreaming and would also make the slipstreaming time longer.
I'm not even going to mention sound. But a better engine would improve racing.
Something like a 3 litre v12 would be amazing but I don't want refueling. Any kind of turbo engine is going to weigh too much but is probably the only option. Maybe try something new with the engine regs. Make the bottom part of the engine completely standard and make anything above the connecting rods free excluding the turbo (and no super expensive materials). Standardized parts bring down the costs and set hard limits to engine performance by their own physical parameters while still allowing lots of freedom with the engine design. Also non hybrid so the racing is not crap. And set a maximum engine price limit and force manufacturers to sell their engines to anyone who wants them. Also one spec of engine can be used at any given time. No factory teams with new engines, competitors with half year old motors and saubers with 2 year old ferrari engines.
Peak power numbers should come down a little but with less electronics there would also be more chances for drivers to make mistakes. Something like 800hp is good number if you make the tires rock hard biasplys and reduce the downforce coming from the bottom of the car because of its higher yaw sensitivety and the cars would look like fast instead of on rails.
I think it was 2003 when lfs was at s1 version. Downloaded the demo and did some driving. That was before the S2 physics update and I was not really fond of the s1 physics at the time. Around that time I still played gran prix legends a lot. Did play the demo sometimes.
Fun fact. It was time before I even had credit card so I like many other finns bought lfs by sending money to janezki who then bought lisence to us. I think my first S2 full driving experience was XRR around kyoto national with my trusty old microsoft sidewinder non-ffb wheel. And like a total dummy my first online races were in FO8 and from there I started working my way down to less powerful cars... basically stopping at the gtr cars to drive around as3 for too many laps.
I have to say before the season I would have never expected ferrari to be so strong. Merc is about as good as they were last year so ferrari has made a huge jump. Merc is a lot faster in quali but their race pace seems pretty equal.
I'd imagine they want to use their own mclaren branded cars in these competitions. Lfs is also pretty outdated and would not give positive impression of their products imho. Both physically and graphically.
Studio 397 (who have done stuff for automobilista) bought rf2 and the engine+sourcecode from ISI and are now developing it as their own sim. Some isi guys now do work for rf2 but 397 tells them what to do. One of the changes 397 has already made is to get rid of the online fees so everyone who owns rf2 can play online for free.

Well the whole thing reads like a fbi criminal profiling thing. Throw enough generic adjectives towards the test taker and then because some of it kinda matches it all sounds like it fits. Agreed with forbin 100%. It is kinda nice test to do just for the lols though.
