this could be the first race of the season where there is hard racing at the front of the pack, not just in the mid field. i think it will be close between the brawns, red bulls and ferrari's.

@devildare - get a life

Mosley is such an unbelievable douchebag: sticking to his guns, even though it will be his end.

Just look at the "talent" that is lining up to get into F1 under the budget cap. Some of the teams thinking about entering actually know what they are doing (Lola), but look at some of the others, for example Mike Gascoyne... sacked from Force India for being a notorious dumb ass, and he wants to come back with an even smaller team? Give me a break.

F1 is dead.

Quote from tinvek :
what i still havent seen is an explanation of what will happen if the "free reg" cars become too fast, how will they work out how to slow them down and then reduce the speed of the big budget cars by the same amount

that's because the FIA hasn't thought about it at all. they are running with scissors.

keep in mind that most cars in LFS with reasonable amounts of power are unable to reach their theoretical top speeds because there are no straights long enough.

Quote from spookthehamster :Really, You're sure of that? What makes you so sure, is it because that's what the press assume in their reports?

I wouldn't be surprised if there was some small variations in there. Nothing huge, but something small.

i'm definitely sure. it's in the technical regulations. by using carbon fibre, it is very easy to make a car that is way lighter than the mininum, and the cars are brought up to the minimum using ballast, which is placed strategically around the car to improve balance and handling.

one of the big complaints the teams have had about KERS not that it makes one car heavier than another, it's that cars using it can't use as much ballast, and so they can't fine tune their handling as well. the problem is even worse for heavier drivers, who have less ballast to work with than lighter drivers in the first place.

this complaint is being addressed by the FIA, who plan to raise the minimum weight next year (to 620kg iirc).

somebody who throws the word "assume" around really ought to read the rule book and find out the truth for themselves. assuming that somebody else is making assumptions and is therefore wrong is highly illogical.

Quote from tristancliffe :McLaren can't threaten to quit. If it comes to nothing they'd get a 50 year ban for lying again. And Hatemelol won't like that very much.

agreed. i think they would love to be in the position to threaten the FIA, but they aren't. in fact, they've been sucking up pretty hard lately (which seems to be working for them, remarkably).

Quote from spookthehamster :The problem with 'fuel corrected' is that it assumes all the cars weigh the same without fuel.

they do. with ballast they are all 605kg.

and it's not like Ferrari are saying "do what we want because we are prima donnas and you'll be sorry if you don't".

they are saying that they entered the sport for a reason, and have stuck with the sport this long for a reason, but that if the new rules go into effect, their reason for participating will no longer be there. they want to compete at the highest level, and up until now, F1 has been the "pinnacle of motorsport", but under next years rules it wont be, and it's completely fair play for them to pass on participating in a series that is a joke.

and on the "conspiracy" side of it, maybe if they skip 2010 they can "cheat" by working on their 2011 car in secret for 2 years. just putting that out there before the haters do. :P

Di Montemezolo is my hero. Max and Bernie are a joke and they have been systematically ruining F1. It has to stop.

tristan, you said you are losing pressure in left handers. does your crank rotate clockwise (when looking forward from behind the car)?
evilgeek
S2 licensed
maybe you should try calculating the the oil pressure required to float the crank in the bearing. when at rest, the crank will sit at the bottom of the bearing, and the space around it will be in the shape of a crescent (touching at the bottom, obviously). when operating, the crank should center itself, with a nearly ring shaped space all around.

if you know the surface area of the bearings (/2), the mass of the crank and the forces acting on it, you ought to be able to calculate how those forces are distributed to the bearing surface and thus infer the oil pressure required to resist them.

also consider shear stress along the radius (acting against the centripetal force), vortices at the boundary layer (which will have a different viscosity than the rest of the oil), inertia of fresh oil passing through the inlets, and backpressure from oil passing through the outlets (both of which will depend on the geometry of the journal drillings).

Quote from BlakjeKaas :Vettel will do good,
Ferrari will do okay,
Force India will drive in the points.

i agree with the first two points.

but even if force india shows up with an improved car, everyone else will show up with bigger improvements.

Quote from tristancliffe :I do hope that the tyres are changed, with a wider rear brought in as opposed to the supposed narrower front... F1 needs more reliance on mechanical grip and less on aero performance, something the wider rear would bring in both regards.

I hope they make the rears wider as well, but I read somewhere that the reason they are considering making the fronts narrower instead is that bridgestone already has the tooling to make the narrower tires, but it would cost them money to retool for bigger ones.

Quote from amp88 :So you're saying racism against F1 drivers is OK because they're thick skinned? There's a massive difference between critics saying you're slow in the car and people being racist against you just for your skin colour. I'm shocked you would actually think racism is OK...

If I was Lewis Hamilton and I saw spectators being blatantly racist without the organisers doing anything about it I would be furious. They should be ejected from the circuit ASAP and banned for life.

i don't think racism is ok, but i do think people are making way too big a deal out of it. lighten up.

Quote from amp88 :Drivers and everyone in the pitlane can see barriers erected in the grandstand and hear spectators shouting. There's also plenty of time when drivers aren't in a car during an F1 weekend.

ok, so by your logic no football team should ever be able to win unless they are playing at home. either that, or you are saying that everyone in F1 are big babies with thin skins and no mental focus, which is pretty pathetic if it's true.

if I was Hamilton and had a problem with what the Spanish thought of me, i'd run around with a placard of my own that read, "Shut up Spaniards, I'm actually whiter than most of you are!"

Quote from amp88 : if they run without spectators...might actually help Lewis Hamilton if there's no racist abuse being thrown at him...

ya, because most drivers look at the spectators instead of the road when they are driving 300 km/h....
