Yes it is a problem. Get that namechange idea out of your head already. The only namechange there is is one for £24 and losing all stats.

It's listed as "should mostly be done to get out of ALPHA." Should. Mostly. Nowhere does it say the next patch will contain Westhill updates.

Isn't going to happen. Don't forget that the users on this board are linked to the licenses and are only created by the software that handles accounts (you can't register here on the forums). If you were to change the forum name, you'd have to change the license name, too. The problem with that is that the name is I think de-facto the primary key for identifying licenses, so all LFSW stats or uploads and all info servers stored about you (bans...) would be invalid or broken.

I'm sure it is technically possible to change the name, but it would be a huge hassle and require lots of extra coding and messing around (create a new account, transfer the funds, delete the old account, update all references to the old account everywhere to now point to the new one, etc. and the bans issue still wouldn't be solved). If they ever made an exception and did it for one person, you could be sure tons of people would instantly demand a namechange, too, so they won't even start with that. Also they'd admit that their rules ("you cannot change your username after the registration - your username is permanent!") can be circumvented anyway.

Actually, cutting the USB cable is enough for it to count as "destroyed", but I guess some people just want to go the whole mile

No, they don't do repairs, but they send full replacements

Sounds like the shifter is broken and needs to be RMA'd.

If you're not under warranty anymore (try calling Logitech either way) and are technically adept, you can attempt to disassemble the shifter unit and repair it yourself, though I don't know what exactly causes the left-right sensor to fail in such a way.

Unfortunately the G25 shifter units tend to break in one way or another, for example the reverse gear ceasing to work is a pretty common one that I experienced, too, but I could fix it by re-soldering together a wire that had broken due to fatigue.

Quote from Greboth :there has not been that many entrants into this competition

I think that's for two reasons
1) Many people think or know they can't skin, so they don't even try
2) They see the already submitted laptimes and know they can't beat em, so they don't even try

Overall, you shouldn't have allowed the entries to be posted publicly (instead only via PM) and maybe a mandatory "entry sent" message in this thread to keep it active. Now that doesn't mean the winners wouldn't be the same people, just that you would've gotten many more entrants

Quote from ANAMENOONEHAD :no new tracks? i hope they really put new tracks its been how long. new tires are great and a new car is good. but if its on the same old tracks.....i dont see it lasting.... my enthusiasm. Hopefully they will suprise us with new environments alot of them.

Nobody said anything about tracks. Scawen isn't the one working on tracks anyway - Eric is. Just because Scawen said new tyre physics are in the works doesn't mean there will or won't be any new tracks available.

In User Control Panel > Edit Options
Scroll down to "Thread Display Options"
Make sure the option "Show Images (including attached images and images in [IMG] code)" is turned on.

The difference is that in IE you aren't logged in whereas in the FF screenshot you are.

Quote from VulcanConray :I agree, It would be great to have a short description of the conceptual differences between the old and new tyre models. Us physics geeks love this kind of stuff It would make playing the game satisfying on a much deeper level.

Yes, it would be really nice to hear a few technical details about it. Though I can understand if Scawen can't or doesn't want to reveal anything about it (yet?).

In any case, from Scawen's post I'd read that the tyre load sensitivity was adjusted, meaning a tyre with high vertical load is less efficient than it is now (less grip on the outer wheel), making the four tyres contribute more evenly to the overall grip. There must be many more changes however, since adjusting that alone would've been possible without writing a completely new tyre model.

Just set the steer lock lower so it fits whatever you perceive to be correct?

Quote from iFastLT :Nice!!! I'm just wondering now, what about all PBs and WRs? If you gonna change tyre physics so it means grip level will change, more likely it will reduce. So you just gonna delete all PBs and WRs or what?

Yes, though they will likely be archived.

Quote from Scawen :Had a few minutes spare to read some posts here.

Once again I see some people are really getting angry again, and that is a pity.

I have said we are working on things but of course that does not calm some people down. The problem is that we are working on some things that will be released at some point, and some things that may or may not be released (experimental). But experience has taught us to just keep quiet when we are developing things, experimental or not.

Why?

In the case of things we are developing that will almost certainly be released, we would really love to tell the community. And thousands of forum or website readers might be pleased about that. But in time, a few people (maybe a hundred or so) will begin to become angry and frustrated, if for example we were unable to reach our release estimate. Just look at the Scirocco. While we wait for me to improve things that will improve the Scirocco, we can see hundreds of posts of anger and frustration, so we are constantly reminded, never to post information about a future release, until we are 99.9% certain that we can make the release date. We made the Scirocco announcement when we were only say... 95% certain we could make the release date, and this has caused the most amazing amount of grief. We have only ourselves to blame, and a direct apology does not fix the mess we caused by this announcement. Most community members accepted our apology but you can just read the forum to see hundreds of attacks on our work rate, secrecy, rudeness and our general bad attitude.

In the other case, where we are working on things that are in an experimental stage, and may or may not turn out to be released in the end, it's even more important not to say anything. Because this would just raise expectations and excitement, that is highly likely to turn to anger once again, when some weeks of experimental work may possibly turn out to be unused in the end.

In the past, we did write development progress reports on our website, but sometimes we had to make changes, drop an idea here or there before release, sometimes adding something else instead. Sometimes the thing we were working on did not get released, but the backlash for such a thing is just too much.

Face to face I could say to someone, "this is what I am working on". And later I could say "I couldn't finish that, for this and that reason, anyway this is what we have come up with". There would be some kind of acceptance or discussion about that. But on the internet there are some angry people around! And they make it very very clear that they are very very angry! It really is a minority of people... most people out there reading the forums behave online just the same way as in real life, with some manners, and normal human respect. But some people really lose it and unfortunately they do so, very long and very hard. So in the end, it turns out that the best way forward is just to keep on working, ignore the angry posts and so on, remind ourselves, that is just a small minority of people, and just keep going. The less information we reveal about our development plans, the less there will be to moan about when something changes or we don't meet the expected release dates.

Even with all the arguments, moaning and anger about our apparent secrecy, it's still better to keep quiet, even though it would really be nice to be able to say things like "this is something we are working on, although we're not sure when it will be finished" or "we are taking a few weeks to experiment with this thing" for the sake of general interest. That really is what we used to do but experience has led us to where we are now. I don't think that will ever change, it won't be possible to go back to a time when we could give a lot more information about our plans. Because as the realism level goes up and up, it becomes harder and harder (and takes a lot more time) to make one small step. That is what we are doing, small steps, LFS goes forward a little bit more each year. It would be really great if we could work 10 times as fast or whatever, but we just have to go on at a sustainable rate, doing this work that we enjoy, and in the way that we want to work (not by moving into an office and employing people - that's not why we are doing this - and if anyone wants to do that you are very welcome to do so yourself - there are programmers and artists for hire and you can start up your own company).

Anyway, once again, we are working on things and expect some good releases this year!

They'd just need to rewrite the clients to use a different master server that doesn't ask for license and can also share the host list. Who needs the master server sources when it would be comparatively easy to simply write a new one? Since you'd have the sources of the client you could make the client accept any communication format you'd like.

Also Scawen himself has stated years ago when those discussions first came up, that he doesn't want to manage other people or have other people meddle with his code forcing him to review it or rewrite it if it interferes with other code parts. And unless you have very strictly enforced guidelines and someone who is dedicated to keeping things in order, open source simply sucks in many many aspects.

Not. Gonna. Happen.
