unless you identify yourself with each online server that you connect to, and this server validates it against the master server. although cracking the racing server too and allowing it to accept any user would allow to establish a network of cracked master and racing servers... oh well.
eventually i hope it boils down to the fact that decent users and racing fans will buy it to appreciate the work beeing done. There's only that much you can do against cracking, and there's a subtle balance, as others have said before, between usability and protection. IMHO it's working well for LFS ATM.
Since AFAIK, there's no crack that allows to play online, as others said before, i think such crack will only drive ppl to pay for the license. Seeing how good the content is (cars, tracks), and how fun online racing is (from the demo), the only possible conclusion is buy a license and support and enjoy it.
I don't know exactly how's the authentication of client/server/master-server works, but i think it is/should/can be pretty resistable to "master server emulation" attacks. that's the beauty of an online system. unless you've cracked into the master database, you can't get login data. without login data you can't get further data that allows you to race, etc.
I'd say that the current system of distribution is good enough. focus on other improvements for now
actually, during the last month or so there have been at least 4 updates. latest version is p9, while the alpa version was p2 iirc. count for yourself. they don't release the patches as official untill everyone's satisfied with them (scawen and the ppl who test them that is)
I'd vote too for an option to disable/remove all mirrors except for My virtual mirror.
This way only I will have mirrors and therefore I'll win more . just kidding. mirrors take computational resources. The "real" mirrors on LFS are not usable for me (side mirrors are out of my FOV, top mirror is jumping too much to be usefull and can't be moved far enough to the left/right to get out of the FOV, other car mirrors are not functional for me).
I think with this option enabled we'll gain usability and resources.
since it has happened before, on non-demo servers too, maybe the kick/ban votes should give more indication to the actual person in question.
suggestion:
1. put the kick/ban buttons on a different "names section" where the LFS ID is shown
(i.e. pressing N untill we get to a table of [SCREEN Name|LFS ID|KICK|BAN]. the k./b. buttons shouldn't be visible when only screen name is.
2. when someone is voted for K./B. and the rest has to press "1" to join the vote, show his LFS ID along with his screen name on the screen.
grrr.... next time pls don't put spoilers in a thread title... I didn't see it live and recorded it, wanted to see it tonight... but now i know the result.
he can still equal Duhan's record of 12 wins though, still valencia to go and he still has at least one more season on MotoGP.
oh.. did i mention it? pls don't put spoilers in the title.. maybe you can even change it for ppl that didn't see this thread yet.
check this out too: http://worldwind.arc.nasa.gov/
it's like google's keyhole (3D interactive world and you can fly and zoom as u like). it downloads tons of stuff while working though, of higher res images. after installing the basic + blue marble data (about 180M total) and playing with it a bit, it grew to nearly a giga on my HD..
Yup, alphabet is Right to left only, but numbers are as usual. Hebrew and Arabic (Persian too I *think*) is traditionally hard for computers. IMHO, you should do some higher priority tasks before you start non-LTR languages (isn't Japanese top-bottom??).
On computers that support Hebrew, ALT+SHIFT usually changes the character set and direction without affecting the rest of the line (i.e. start a RTL "session" at the cursor position), while CTRL+LEFT-SHIFT and CRTL+RIGHT-SHIFT change the alignment of the whole line to left/right respectively.
Eventhough Hebrew is aligned to the right, It's acceptable that the line is alligned to the left on computer apps. i.e. IRC etc. It's the same "effect" as if your line is alligned to the right and you enter some english input. The line "grows" to the wrong direction but the text is readable.
I just thought that if you somehow use window's layout engine, you'll get the direction for free. anyway, if you have something to test, just let me know.
you focus at the perveived image which is, due to the optics, quite far from your eyes. if the optics are good, i see no reason for it to be worse than a pair of glasses.
hmm.. didn't notice he used my name... but yes.. they're wreckers and very impolite in general... :/ we didn't manage to ban them yesterday, they always split before the vote is complete..
the Z800 3D Visor seems pretty cool. the resolution doesn't completely suck and it includes a motion tracker. didn't hear any actual reviews for it though as it's pretty new. anyone tried it?
mouse is as good (or better) than wheel on some cars. more accurate and more direct response. the only issue is digital gas/break. i've used mouse too when i 1st tried lfs. then, few months later i got a wheel.
bad racers should be banned. mouse and kb should stay imo.
In hebrew there's a saying "The shoemaker walks barefeet". Kinda funny that most computer literated guys that (i'm sure) preach "common" ppl to backup their stuff on a regular basis find themselves without a recent backup when such things happen.
Also, due to Murphy's laws, the system will never fail if you've just made a backup (the corrolary holds here, eventhough it did crash on me once the day after i backed up ). With most of the HD failures i've had though, i didn't have a proper backup.
a shame really, but shit happens. hope you'll manage to save the important stuff. but hey, it's a good oppurtunity to "clean up your desk"... not that you ever wanted to though
I'm with a friend's dell laptop, display is 1680x1050 and it displays well. (not very good framerate though at this res with the mobile 5200fx 32M). but it works
