You people are describing a basic search problem, which is what the AI does, use a heuristic to guide your search of all possible inputs to only consider those that will most likely result in a good outcome. In order for someone to do this in LFS Scawen would have to open up a more direct interface for people to write their own AI drivers.
If everyone has the same options then it is not an unfair advantage. If someone prefers an option that puts them at a disadvantage then that's their choice. It is impossible to have everyone on exactly equal footing unless everyone used the exact same wheel, the exact same options, the exact same computer. With your logic you can say having vision is a big plus to being able to drive around the track, since some people(at least one at some time) prefer not to use their sight let's make everyone race blindfolded.
Well you have declared yourself correct so why even reply? Are you saying that the default cockpit view most accurately represents what can be seen in real life driving? There is no way possible at all that the view could ever be improved?
By what parameters are you defining realistic? Surely it isn't field of view, because in real life you have a much wider field of view. Is it that you can see the dash? I don't know about you but when I am racing I am looking out the window and not at the dash. So why have the dash filling up a significant number of pixels when I am not even concentrating on it, all that does is decrease the number of pixels available to actually display the road.
It is easier to use something besides the default cockpit view(I am not talking about driving with chase view, but something like the hood view) because IT IS MORE REALISTIC meaning that it better approximates what you can see in a real car GIVEN the limited nature of playing the game on a small lcd screen rather than having a full field of view.
How can people argue that the cockpit view is best because it is more realistic? Do you drive your car by looking at a 19" lcd screen that is 3 feet in front of you, no you don't, so there will NEVER BE A WAY for the view in LFS to be absolutely realistic. So limiting it to just the cockpit view doesn't make any sense when being allowed to adjust your viewpoint can allow you to better take advantage of the limited ability to view things through your screen.
That's not an argument saying chase cam should be allowed for all servers, or the other views that give a possible advantage, I usually only ever use the chase view when watching another car and want to better see what lines they are taking. But taking away the option to do that on a server is just annoying.
Until I have my own personal holodeck I would like a custom view. I don't have the biggest screen so the cockpit view just blocks out area so I am able to view less of the actual track.
Imagine having to drive your car while looking out of a 10"x8" cardboard rectangle, do you call that realistic? So until the screens are able to replicate the view you have in real life by being huge and filling up your whole vision we need options in the sim to make it MORE realistic by not forcing it to have to view the whole cockpit on screen while driving.
Although I can definitely see why the devs want to just focus on what they are doing now. Trying to organize and import 3rd party content certainly would be more work. They have shown a preference to want to work on whatever part of LFS they currently see as the priority. Opening up formats for people to be able to use would also lead to an increased chance of hacking. Trying to open up formats when future development will change those formats would also add another level of headaches. Having to worry about being sued because some person included copyrighted content in something they submitted to and was included in LFS would also open up a lot more legal issues and worries.
But these are all issues that will have to be faced eventually.
The number of times people pull out the false dichotomy of either there will be tons of crap added or we can keep it the same as it is now is ludicrous.
Would LFS be more enjoyable with more high quality content(diverse range of cars, tracks, either licensed OR fictional)? I think it's an obvious yes. There seems to be a large amount of unused talent in the LFS user base that could be put to use to make LFS better. Wouldn't it be better for everyone involved in LFS if we found a way to harness this talent sooner rather than later?
But as has been mentioned, all we can do is sit around and see what the devs want to do with their sim.
Excellent post, unfortunately the devs don't seem to mind if we have to end up waiting 4+ more years for S3. Not that I won't keep enjoying LFS as it is in the meantime, but it's human nature to want more now rather than later.
