Quote from DragonCommando : I was trying to say that you don't have to do alot of work or know what you are doing to get a better ratio set,

and that's why everyone is disagreeing with you. you don't have to do a lot of work, but you DO have to know what you are doing.

ideal gear ratios are highly dependent on the power and torque curves of the engine and the mass of the car, as well as it's aerodynamics, and are dependent to a lesser degree on the nature of the track (speed coming out of turns, lengths of straightaways, etc).

i admit it's hard to go too terribly wrong using the ratios from a real life 944 and adjusting the top speed via the final drive because, as previously mentioned, a road going car is generally going to have well spaced ratios that don't favour any one range of speeds (ie, you wouldn't expect a car that does well on the highway to be sluggish in the city or vice versa). but not going terribly wrong doesn't mean you've done anything right.

i suggest reading the wiki. there are some very helpful and easy to understand tips there.

aren't airplane throttles are oriented that way too? (pull back to go faster)

Quote from Zachary Zoomy :I find that Bob Smith's easy race setups make the car easly to drive. no understeer or oversteer. I drive the RAC alot n city driving tracks

yes, Bob's setups are great, but I guess what I'm really after is an understanding of which changes to make when the "usual suspects" are not available. in other words, in a GTR car, i would use the springs and dampers to adjust the low speed handling, and the wings to adjust the high speed handling, but since the RAC has no wings, i didn't know where to start.

i fought with the car A LOT last night, and finally came up with something that wasn't a complete death trap. i don't have the settings in front of me, but from memory, the random experimenting that finally helped to control the high speed lift-throttle oversteer problem i was having was to increase the tire pressure and bump damping on the front end. it seemed to help keep the back end from pitching up and getting too loose. it's now understeering a bit, but with some more tweaking i think i can get something drivable.

i'm one of those stubborn fellows who likes to make my own sets from scratch. after a few thousand laps, i've finally got the FXR handling well enough that i think the only thing holding me back is my driving.

so, in an effort to develop my driving, i'm thinking i should switch to a slower and twitchier car, namely the FAC. i ought to be able to figure out the low speed handling of this car, but given its lack of wings, i'm not sure where to begin with the high speed handling, and i know it likes to oversteer at speed. can anybody give me some hints to get started building my set?

i just have to say two things.

1) congrats to the boys for winning (yet again).

2) put a hockey stick in the hands of a football hooligan, and i guarantee there would be bloodshed within minutes.

well it looks like i'm too late, but please put me on the waiting list. i'll drive an FXR (GT1 class) if a spot becomes available.

this is like one of those "i got banned" threads, except i didn't actually get banned, and i'm not upset, i just think it's funny.

joined a server hosted by a team (who shall remain unnamed to save them the embarrassment). several team members were on, and a few randoms like me.

car selection was not restricted, so i picked my favorite car, the fxr, and did a couple of laps before being tele-pitted by an admin. the team were driving the xfr and didn't want unfair competition. their server, their rules, i'm ok with that, so i switched cars. i'd never driven the xfr before, but i still clobbered them, then took a break for a few mins.

when i returned, they had switched to the xrr, so i switched back to the fxr, thinking that any gtr class car would be acceptable. a couple laps into the race i was well in the lead, and *poof* tele-pitted again. arguement ensued about whether or not the fxr was faster than the xrr and i nearly got myself banned, but eventually decided to try the xrr (which i'd also never driven before), and surprise, surprise, i still clobbered the field. i didn't really expect an apology, so i wasn't surprised when i didn't get one, but it would have been nice. after all, i gave them what they wanted in the end, an ass kicking with an unfamiliar car.

(and btw, i'm not fast. i was lapping about 6 seconds off WR pace.)

i just have to laugh that a bunch of guys would go to the trouble of making a team when they still have so much to learn about the game. don't get me wrong, i appreciate the effort of anyone who puts a server up, but come on.... kicking people out of the race just because they drive faster than you, how childish is that?

i'm in Calgary, and i would love to join in on some league races.

i tried to make it to some of the SimFIA North American DTM races this fall, but couldn't make it to a lot of them due to my work schedule (races were weekday evenings). i think that if races were in the afternoon on weekends they could draw from Canada, USA, Mexico, Argentina, early risers from Australia, and Europeans who can't sleep.

i prefer GTR class, but any car will do, really. medium or long tracks to keep it interesting.

Quote from sgt.flippy :It means you're right.

I don't yield for blue flag, only if I know for sure it's the leader of the race, otherwise, if he's little more back in the pack, I'll race him. As far as I'm concerned we both enjoy doing that, because I can immediately start racing, and for him the race ain't over yet.

but for him the race isn't with you. he may have chosen a strategy for the whole race, and only cares about finishing well against the other cars he started against, not about racing for 2 or 3 corners against you. a race is bigger than that, and if you decide for him that it will be more fun to "race" you while he's in the middle of a real race, you could spoil everything for him. maybe he's just fought someone for 3 laps who is now in the pits, and he has clear track ahead, but you decide to get in his way...

personally, i love a clean race, but i would ram you off the track if you did this to me, because it's obvious that you have no respect for other drivers, and can't be reasoned with. a blue flag is a blue flag, no matter who you think you are.

word to big bird(er)!

i think the conedodgers servers are very well run, and getting better all the time. i think one of the reasons you see such an emphasis in enforcing the blue flag rules in the chat screen is that the races there are very competative, and everyone wants a good clean race. it's very rare for anyone to actually be lapped in a 10 lap race, and the vast majority of blue flag warnings are a result of people joining mid-race. when there are 20 cars on track, with the top 10 finishing within 20 seconds of the leader, even the smallest disruption caused by a late joiner can ruin a very exciting race for several drivers (not just the one directly interfered with).

there are a ton of servers available online, and i would say that conedodgers is one of the best and most fun going, but if you are still learning how to handle the car in heavy traffic, it might not be the best place to practice, simply because it's so competetive.

but for those who insist on giving it a go, at least try to finish your races when you start them, even if you go off in T1. if you end up a minute or more behind the leaders, so what? you'll finish the race, get some experience, and you wont see any blue flags. but if you keep crashing and rejoining, you ruin everyone's fun, including your own.

my 3 cents...

Quote from Aquilifer :I read/heard somewhere you can't get GT3RS with any other than white color (with red stripes). I guess it has changed...

.

don't know where you heard that. i've spent the last few months trying to decide whether to spend the lotto money (that i haven't won yet) on an orange one, a green one, or both.

since the original question was essentially "why don't racers like drifters", but a big pile of the responses have been essentially "drifting r00lz! don't disrespect our mad skillz!", i would have to say that i don't like drifters because they can't follow the plot.

for me it depends...

i would never bump someone i was racing against, even if they were a lap down.

however, in the case of mid-race joiners who either do not understand or do not care about blue flag, who have caused more than one crash due to their dangerous driving, and who cannot be passed safely, it sometimes comes down to a decision between voting to kick and giving a small nudge to push out of the way, and tbh, i think it's less rude, and gives them more opportunity to learn, to give them a nudge than to kick them off the server.

At work, my boss has blocked LFS Forum noooo, what will i do when i have no pc problems to fix :o , im going to have to do something about this! il work away round it of course... they dont know me well enough yet, to clever whahaha

My boss got really angry, said "your trying to get on a stupid chat site when you are ment to be doing a office move!" (office move - moving pcs around, telephones etc. Patching the network for them and so on).

So gay (this is not another gay off topic thread haha), he also blocked Team MG site :o... oh well, il get round it. if i cant by doing something with it, il just go on the isp server we have and unblock it

So annoying tho , what am i going to do at work now when it goes abit quite!!! (so got to beat him hehehe)

if i was your boss i'd fire you, if not for surfing the net when you are supposed to be working, then for your arrogance and stupidity. how can you honestly think you are going to outsmart your boss? judging by your spelling and grammar, i doubt you could outsmart a 10 year old.

did someone say geek?

it does seem a bit weird to tell my girlfriend that i have an "internet computer game date" with some people i don't even know, but on the other hand, i would never complain about her spending time away from me to take her kids to hockey practice, and i think she realizes that it amounts to the same thing.

split car sets - suspension vs gearing

sometimes it would be nice to be able to quickly combine the suspension settings from one setup with the gear ratios, final drive and differential settings from another without having to build a 3rd set up one parameter at a time.

basically, create presets that group together related parameters, and then build up the car "superset" by combining the pieces.

+1

i tend to crash when trying to change my pit instructions and drive at the same time. would be nice to decide ahead of the race that i want some fuel on the 1st stop, and a different amount of fuel and some tires on the 2nd stop, etc.

is it a proper guitar amp? if not, are you using a pre-amp?

can't say without more info, but it's possible you are overheating the amp.
