Bloody hell 5.5, I think I may have to wait for the Penryn after all!

As for ImportFantasy's 'snowflake' effect. I also have this problem. I clocked my 6800GT as far as I could on air cooling a while ago and it was running nice and stable. However the dust built up around the fan so much it actually blocked the airflow completely, resulting in that 'snowflake' effect similar to yours. This is now permanent on one channel on my card. If I switch to the other DVI port on the back however it works just fine with no artifacting.

I now check inside my case much more frequently because of this (and I also reduced my clock slightly).

Personally I would not touch eBay for a PC or components. Saying that I have a friend that gets quite a lot of components off it and has not really had any problems.

If you are against going for a brand like Dell but are not confident enough to build your own you can look at sites like ebuyer.co.uk, overclockers.co.uk & aria.co.uk. They have pre-built systems too.

Just a quick look in oc.uk and I found this:

Titan Gamer Extreme Intel Core ... .40GHz SILENT DDR2 System

and to Jak... sometimes it is unavoidable to use anything other than a laptop. I need to get a laptop sometime in the future that can handle Ableton that I will use when I DJ with so unfortunately ill also have to shell out, but what I am paying for is the mobility and practicality which would be impossible with a desktop. But yeah, if you can get a desktop.

ah crap

[stereotype]

Bloody Americans!

[/stereotype]

Thats that idea out the window. Oh well it looks like a good bet anyway.

May I just ask one more question, are you liquid cooling on the cpu clock you mentioned Jak cos that seems like a big increase!?

Thanks Mr G

I see the P5K-E on ebuyer is not much more expensive than one I listed before.

I have no need for a bigger monitor, my Belinea 20" widescreen is fine at the moment. Plus I'm getting a 1080p Bravia 40" soon which I will use along with my PC, primarily as a media centre but I have also been told they are good for gaming.

Would this GTS be almost as good as the GTX: EVGA GeForce 8800 GTS 512MB GD ... - Retail (512-P3-E841-AR)
I really wanna stick to EVGA because of the upgrade possibilities they offer, would this be a good choice?

I have been waiting for this upgrade for a long time and a few more months is gonna kill me (well probably not but I'm impatient) so I think ill get the Q6600 now and possibly sell it and replace with the Penryn at a later date (probably along with the liquid cooling solution).

Also I see James above you have 4Gb, would 4Gb be recommended over 2 at this moment or can I get away with 2 for now?

Once again thanks for the info

I'm currently looking to upgrade in about 3 weeks time.

My current aim is for raw power on a standard clock and then upgrade to liquid cooling and clock at a later date (I've heard <3Ghz on the processor is not uncommon).

This is my intention:

Asus P5K Intel P35 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2
Intel Core 2 Quad Pro Q6600 &q ... n" 2.40GHz (1066FSB)
EVGA GeForce 8800 GTX 768MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI
Crucial Ballistix 2GB (2x1GB) DDR2 PC2-8500C5 1066MHz

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

If you read that article, he basically admits at the bottom that what was written is crap, his sources are dodgy and it's all probably just a marketing tool. As everyone seems to be using global warming to sell products nowadays it seems very likely to me it's just a gimmick.

As for using it in race car tyres... I had no idea either but I guess it would adjust the temperatures of the GTR tyres and how fast/slowly they heat/cool. This would be adjustable by changing a few settings within lfs and could possibly already be taken into account could it not?

I was thinking bout waiting for next-gen cards, but I heard only the lower end stuff was coming out in 2 - 3 months and the high end stuff (9800 GT type cards) wouldn't come out till November at the earliest

Might just get a 8800GTX now and trade it in for a 9800 at the end of '08

Looks like a TV is my best bet then. I have heard however that when sitting relatively close to a large screen lcd it can appear very pixelated because of the resolution only being 1080p and having to be stretched so much. However my mate has a 36" and I gave that a whirl sat quite close and it seemed ok to me (playing on a 360 that is)

Also, just found a Bluray re-writer and HD-dvd player allinone for 180 quid. A media centre / gaming rig on a 46" tv is starting to sound like the best idea.

Hi mate, that setup is fantastic.

I have started a new job recently and have a bit of cash to play with now so I wanna upgrade my shit. Just wanna ask a couple of questions as you have a similar setup to what I am aiming for...

I am currently running a 20.1" Belinea monitor (which has been fantastic). I was thinking of either running another two, or getting a 46" Bravia lcd tv, one with good contrast and fast response so its ok for gaming (at least I hope it will be). As you have gone from one to the other would you recommend the TV over the 3-Monitor setup? And also, what is the performance hit running the 3 monitors on games. As for my system I'm gonna go for the 6600 quad with 2Gb of ram, and one (maybe upgrade to two in Feb) 8800GTX all on a 1333Mhz bus, and possibly liquid cool everything so I can clock it all to the moon.

btw this is not just for lfs you understand, having played through crysis with basically minimum settings recently has prompted me to finally upgrade.

Cheers mate

I have just ordered one from overclockers.co.uk, I have had good quality service from them before and they have just about the same price for the wheel as everybody else.

Couldn't find any in a sale myself. In fact, nobody in any of the games/computer stores in Nottingham seemed to know what the hell it was. (I only tried high street stores as I wanted this thing asap but now gotta wait till friday for delivery, at least it's on it's way!)

Quote from dutch_NL :have you got a patch problem. say it here.

You are addicted to Nicotine patches?

oh he's edited it...

i got many problems with the patch
you list two things... one of which is available for 24 quid, the other with a small movement of your foot (probably)
and wants the xrt back.
and i can't shift now and if i give gas it just don't work.
if your in FBM take your foot off the gas when shifting
so the patch sucks.

Thanks to all your hard work guys,

You deserve a well earned rest after this release. It's been absolute mayhem the past few weeks.

As for the people complaining, I really don't understand some peoples selfishness. This game is in Alpha, to expect anything other than change is ludicrous. To whine about not being able to do their oh so precious *insert time here* on the same setup like before because (oh no!) the tracks have been updated is totally ridiculous. Even real life tracks get updates and additions.

OK rant over

Now all I need is a G25 !

Quote from Meanie :Exactly the way I feel too.
I might win with a 5s lead on a 10 lapper or finish 4th (or whatever) BUT fighting all the way with someone and I"ll choose the later every time. It's a no brainer.

But yeah, enjoy your first victories!
They're the best.

(Apart from league championship ones )

I've also had some great battles on the new combo with the new car, can get some very close racing. For me having a close race is much more rewarding than simply winning outright.

When people talk about this it always reminds me of an interview Button did with ITV after an F1 race, even though he didnt finish anywhere near the top he had a big grin on his face and said something like, "I had a great battle with Reubens".

Thats what racing is all about (for me anyways)

- winning has its plus side too of course

First of all I don't mind the 45 degree look function, it should be left in, but I think you should have the option to look 90 degrees on one button press too.

I use a DFP with the left, right and down POV buttons to look around. This makes it impossible to press both left and then right (or vice versa) at the same time.

If anyone has a solution I'm all ears, but for me I would like to see the 90 degree look added again as well as perhaps the option for switching between 45 and 90 somehow (maybe a 'press for 90 degrees' toggle button?)

Quote from Jakg :What i meant was that people go there with the aim of driving fast, rather than driving fast on the way.

...oh i can't explain it!

I understand. You mean the Autobahn was introduced so people could travel faster legally to get to their destinations quicker, but increasingly people travel to the Autobahn as their destination specifically to drive at high speeds. And yes it is probably the English that do it most!

I always thought German cars were limited to 155 because on the Autobahn (although in theory it has no speed limit) speeds above 155 were frowned upon? (mph btw)

as for the "one long straight" idea how about a high speed oval, with perfectly banked corners at either end?

I sometimes use 3 sound cards for DJing with, each one output to a separate channel in my mixer. So there are reasons for having more than one

Thanks for the link mate although I seem to have missed this problem so far

I used to have this problem, about a month ago it started to stutter, I was wondering if it was maybe because I had my gfx card and processor clocked but after reverting back to factory settings it was still the same. I have very recently formatted and have since not had the problem again. I have clocked my system again since the format and im running a SATA Western Digital HDD, both before and after the format. I just hope it stays this way.

As a note I did not backup my lfs folder (doh!) and have pretty much a fresh install running now so maybe its an increased amount of content that is causing problems?

Spec:
Athlon 64 3500+
1GB Corsair DDR 400MHz/PC3200
ECS’ KN1 Extreme
GeForce 6800GT 256MB PCI-E
Western Digital SATA HDD 7200 RPM
Standard Prof x86 XP fully updated

I apologise for leaving too, but the server kept consistently dropping me about 5 mins after I joined

If you plan to do this again I suggest you gain admin control over the server, and also control over the minions as everyone just seemed to be messin about when i was in there. Looks like it went a bit better on those replays tho

Just one thing maybe for realism, if you are basing it on an English city/road system maybe everyone should have an English style number plate i.e: P362 GAV ?

Very good video there mate, however I cant decide if I like the car sounds as well as the music or not, I do but I don't. hmmmm

The editing is top notch. Only problem is the direct link is not working so had to watch the youtube version.

Hope to see more vids from you in the future

It was on UKCT Race 2 server, the wind was 31mph and like Mr End says; it can make fast cornering difficult! The writing looks fine to me, except if your talking about the googlevideo'ed crap re-encode version (if so watch the .wmv one). I do think I need some AA next time though

Heres the replay, I think it's funny even if nobody else agrees with me
