This is totally normal. All games have some very demanding parts depending the complexity of the scenery etc.
What is not normal is the massive drop in the FPS form 70 to 15 eg.
With my computer P4 3.2, 6800GT, 1GB Ram I have FPS 90-120 and some slowdowns at the places you mentioned to 70-80 fps.
And my PC is has half the horse power of yours.
There are some options inside LFS that make quite a difference.
Some are
In Graphics Menu
Dust LOD (take the slider to far left)
Mirror LOD (take it a little to left for more performance)
Haze effect (set it to NO)
Shadow type (set it to Low Res)
Full Wheels (set it to main)
Draw Trees (set it to main)
Draw Flags (set it to main)
Draw rubber (set it to main)
The goal to the above is not to have the mirror detail very high because it consumes much horse power. (Press shift-M to show/hide mirrors and see how the FPS rises if mirros are set to off)
In Misc Menu
Limit frame rate in game (set it to NO)
Dynamic LOD Reduction (set it to far right)
About the crashes thing.
A thing I noticed is that when I'm trying new things, eg changing cars, tracks, settings with rapid mouse clicks eventually LFS will crash. But if you give some time to each click LFS does not crash!!
Also a good practice is not to have many windows open and change the focus from LFS to your browser, the to your messenger, then to your player. Just have LFS in full screen mode and do some racing. Then close it down and continue the rest of your activities.
I dont think it's a hardware problem.
I had this auto left-right oscillation problem during the straights with my Thrustmaster Rally Gt Pro wheel too.
Also, if you watch an AI driver performing a lap you 'll notice that while in a straight he does this thing exactly. He does not keep the wheel steady, he does this rapid left-right movement all over the straight.
(So I guess there's something wrong with the LFS engine here.
Also I don't have this problem in other games like RBR.)
The solution I came up with was to let the wheel take care of the FF control, (it has an option in the control panel) not the LFS and I reduced the FF in LFS from 80% down to 25%. Now it's working fine.
So, the solution I think is to keep messing up with the settings of the FF control until you find the right combination for yourself. It'll take some time but eventually you will sort it out, I hope.
Unless I'm totally wrong
Can someone plz give me the link that explains why we made this transition to the sound sustem (the technical reason)?
There are so many threads about the "sound" matter that I can't it find via the search option.
But i remember that there was a relevant thread or group of posts.
Tis is VERY true. But many people including myself until recently just check the main page for updates. Latest patch is U.
"Great I have U already installed " most people say I think.
The link in the front page is for the latest major patch only (U patch at the moment) http://www.lfsforum.net/showthread.php?t=7373 and not for the Test Patches too. (For now U30).
So it would be nice I think, to add a link in the main page for the test patch thread too, http://www.lfsforum.net/showthread.php?t=9869 because the changes are really fantastic, many new features and improvements and people simply miss that
I find that confusing. While you are racing there's only one race and one fastest lap and of course one winner.
A good race comes with same cars or at least same class cars (XFG-XRG) (XRT-RB4-FXO) (FXR-XRR_FZR) etc. If someone still wants to race with a slowest car it might be acceptable but we can't mess up the race for that.
Also there is the the qualify mode for that matter where you can have the cars and their times in a grid for comparisons of this kind.
OK thanks guys, I got the picture.
I guess the answer is "This is how driving is".
I dont have a driving licence in real life so I'm used to that "fake" keyboard auto-center style.
As you know there are two modes of keyboard driving in LFS.
"Keyboard - no help" & "Keyboard - stabilised".
I'm pasting the corresponding section from the LFS manual http://en.lfsmanual.net/wiki/Options#Mouse.2FKeyboard
and I'm highlighting the two important senteces that show up my problem.
I find the stabilized mode more difficult to handle as this automatic countersteering confuses me.
I prefer the no help mode where the wheel of the car just reverts to auto-center if no keys are pressed.
(I could say that the whole situation resembles the auto-gear shifting with the manual shifting differences. You could say that auto-shifting is easier for begginers but only if you use manual shifting you can make the perfect gear change exactly when you want it. The auto shifting has some threshold in the revs and it will change the gear if the revs are too low or too high no matter if a turn is ahead for example.)
So what the problem is...
I hooked up the wheel, configured it nicely, but I noticed that this automatic countersteering exists here too.
If I let the wheel after a turn to slip in my hands smoothly to auto-center, instead of that it makes some some stabilization movements exactly as the keyboard-stabilized mode does.
Movements that I think don't resemble the feeling of the car but they seem more like "stabilization steering aids".
Is there a possibility to avoid this somehow (with a setting or a future option) or simply this is how a wheel driving is?
Wow you reached the end of that huge post?
Glad you survived, do you still have strength for an answer too?
1. The triangle icons in the small map are equilateral triangles. Very nice improvement from the old squares but its hard to determine the direction of the vehicle (in a spin or low speed turn). Is there a possibility to make the icons isosceles triangles or another shape so the direction of the nose of the car is recognizable even if the car not moving?
2. The setups rename button is very good do. Simplifies a very time consuming procedure from within LFS. But I would like to see a sort by name option too here. I dont change a setup's settings regulary so old ones (like the BL1 setup) always get hidden to the bottom and I really cannot locate them. But if you put a sort by name option there it will be very easy because I'll name them respectivelly BL1_biggie, BL2_biohazard, FE1_xxx etc... and you get the picture. Much more easier to locate a name this way. Now they are all messed up as they are sorted by date of modification only.
I installed patch U25 too. I was at plain U for all that time.
Congratulations, you have made some very good improvements there but I want more...
I dont want to ask any major stuff here as i think the suggestions section is for this job.
I think these ones are minor so they can implemented with not much work else... just ignore me.

That's from me for the moment , keep up the good work
