A couple shots from a recent endurance race in Lithuania. The "Omnitel 1000 km race". Some Belgians won it with the Bimmer, Lithuanians took a close second with the Porsche (a minute and a half close) and guys from Poland took third with the Ferrari
((end)velocity - initial velocity) / time = acceleration
Newton's second law of physics: F=ma
Force = Mass * Acceleration
We already know acceleration - it's roughly 50 ms^2 horizontally and 40 ms^2 vertically. I wasn't speaking about the force mentioned above which is measured in N (newtons). I had G force in mind which is acceleration measured in meters per square second.
Now that I've put some time in researching about it (God, internet is good). The overall acceleration or G force is a simple sum of two vectors
Edit: A and B are VECTORS. 2+2=4 does NOT apply here
I used this equation a and b are vertical and lateral forces and c is the overall force.
edit: i think this is not the actual physical formula to calculate forces. I can't find it. This one only aplies when the forces act at an angle of 90 degrees.
Don't worry I bet developers are not worried about stuff you're posting on these boards. I mean it's Christmas and New Year! They are having a great time in Hawaii right now. Massages all day long and parties through the night. Drinks served by exotic girls. Surfing, beaches, sun ...either that or working their ass off to get the damn patch ASAP to the whining nerds and people who actually like LFS.
What would these guys do if development of LFS was officially stopped? Would they shut up? I mean come on there's so much to do other than whining over the internet. Don't get me wrong though, I can't wait for the patch too but nothing's going to change if you post useless complaints.
I'll keep that in mind but I am hoping to avoid such incidents in the future as I succesfully did in the past. I play LFS like once a week and was a bit upset at the time I wrote the first report because I couldn't find any more interesting combos with people online. It was that evening with a couple of free hours to mess around.. you know.
I'd be happy to have it too. Couldn't save it in time though and temp_mpr got overwritten the instant i tried to reconnect. I knew the ban wouldn't last but thought this was a bit too much for a slight bump under braking while in a close fight. It might have looked different from his POV (lag maybe?). Anyway, I think this was the first time ever I got a ban and that's not a big thing. It just looked like I was judged a bit too quickly without doing something terribly wrong.
Yeah, great servers, great racing. Had much fun on the TBO server the other day and decided to check out the GEN (XFR/UFR) server. A combo I've never tried before. Been battling it out with a guy from R2R for two laps or so and after he overtook me i tapped him slightly in the back under braking (missed it, my bad) but that was a high speed corner and he went straight to the apex and I went quite wide. Thinking this is nothing I tried to carry on but the other guy sudenly braked hard and turned into me. We crashed. He told me this was intentional and banned me. That's a bit jackass if you ask me.
Good point there about noise and revs. Car with a loud exhaust will always be (feel) faster!
I also agree you can't tell the exact shift point but it doesn't all go wrong if you miss it by a couple hundred revs.
I check on your progress in F3 from time to time. You really aren't as bad as you make it out to be. I respect you a lot for what you do. Really.
Back on the visual reference for braking points and such topic. When approaching a corner I look at it and there's this point where I feel I can't go any further and I must brake to slow down in time and keep myself on the racing line at the entry. I know people who look at tyre walls, signs, lines ... you name it and are still way faster than me. I guess it's a matter of habit. I personally like the way I do it.
Optimal shift point is above peak power point. How much above depends on the gearing and width of the power band. As I said you can't exactly tell but while actually in the car your senses help you. Sound of the engine, g forces .. i think plenty of those were mentioned above. Asked "How does a car feel on the edge?" Michael Schumacher replied "It feels optimum." (might be not in those exact words) they were talking about cornening but I don't think this makes much difference.
The point is to drive the car by feeling otherwise you'll endup looking at and thinking about too many wrong things. I mean do you really need a 100 meter sign to know where to brake?
I think you already stated yourself that it is not really necessary to shift at the optimal point. Peak power and peak torque points give you some idea of optimal gear change points whereabouts.
What the hell are you doing here. Talking about something so obvious. Is it that hard to figure out where to shift? LFS gives you information about power and torque peak points. For eg. XRT:
Power:
183 kW (245bhp) @ 6019 rpm Torque:
325 Nm (239 lbft) @ 4585 rpm
Try harder if you can't or give up and use automatic gearbox.
Skill is what separates better drivers from worse. If you can't figure out your gearshifts with the available amount of information and unlimited practice time chances are you have none.
This isn't exactly what you're asking for but how about buying another car for track day use? Like an old cheap hatch something? With witch you could mess around and have fun. An old ef or eg civic, vw golf mk2, mitsu colt/lancer, nissan pulsar ... list goes on. Search a bit on the web to find out which cars are more popular so to make sure there's more info online and spare parts around where you live. Then you wouldn't have to worry about the car being good on the road too. I'm suggesting small hatchbacks because they don't need much power to go "fast" and the feel of speed is more apparent. That way you can learn doing stuff yourself without risk of ruining your everyday car.
Like tristan pointed out a civic will always be a civic. But it's a good start and quite cheap for the speed you can squeeze out of that bouncy bucket if driven well.
What you are trying to say is "if you like getting crashed in every race you start racing is for you!". Right?
With a lot of cars on the grid in fox junkies it's quite sad. When you join you are atomatically at the back. If you get crashed (not much of an 'if' is it?) you'll start next race at the back again. Sometimes you need to REALLY hold it back before T1 and get around it a bit later than everyone else. That way you'll overtake everybody who crashed. If you're lucky, you'll start next race at least midfield or even closer to the leaders.
On servers with reversed grid it's even worse when someone who doesn't know the combo appears at the front of the grid (been there myself). All in all there will always be dumb crashes. Somehow the average LFSer is not really aware of other people on the track and/or his and cars physical capabilities.
