Quote from Forbin :To get a NAS the equivalent of what I have now (4-bay with LSI controller rather than Marvell), I'd have to pay significantly more than I have on my current disk setup

Not necessarily, the amount you spent on your RAID card could easily get you a 4-bay NAS.

Quote from Forbin :also be limited to 1Gbps rather than the 6Gbps that you seemed to think was oh so important.

My point is, that I found it strange for you to jump on this person for buying a decent motherboard instead of a cheap one with hardly any features, while you're spending hundreds of bucks on a discrete RAID card alone. If he'd want more than one SSD for example, should he also do the same?!

Also, with 10Gb networking in the horizon, and Thunderbolt already a reality, if you want a blazing fast NAS with insane bandwidth and low latency, you can already do it while also using the standard network for legacy support. When we did some quick frame time testing on a quad bay NAS using RAID 0 and Thunderbolt (plus PC capture cards), the bandwidth was close to 1 gigabyte a second for writes. So NAS can be plenty fast, you just have to do it right.

If you want hardware RAID, a purpose built NAS is almost always the better solution for longetivity and ease of maintenance compared to stuffing it all inside a general use PC.

Quote from Forbin :You missed the additional parts at the bottom in the Custom section. Note the LSI RAID card. It has 1 min-SAS port. The cable has 1 mini-SAS connector on one end, and branches out into 4 SATA cables, each of them 6Gb/s.

And how much did that card cost you? Rather having put in extra 30 euros for a decent Z77 motherboard, you'd have that support as native on board.

Quote from Forbin :As for the RAM slots, meh. Do you really populate all 4 on a board with 4 slots? Having 4 modules puts a fair bit of extra strain on the memory controller, too.

I currently use four out of eight slots on my personal mobo, so using quad channel layout. If the memory controller has been designed properly, then it can handle the bandwidth of all the channels the motherboard has.

Quote from Forbin :Why do I need USB3 for a keyboard, mouse, wheel, or joystick?

Try USB3 memory sticks and external hard-drives.

Quote from Forbin :You only get decent high quality audio with an attempt at isolation on mobo's costing $350+ USD. Why buy a mobo just for that when I can have a properly isolated discrete sound card in the HT Omega Claro Halo (PCI) or ASUS Xonar Essence STX (PCIe)? Especially when you're driving high-end headphones like the Grado RS1i.

There is such a thing as diminishing returns. I got an Essence STX on my personal rig for the HD650's, but most of my customers who I've built computers for have been more than happy with some of the Gigabyte integrated sound cards with nice DAC's and op-amps. New Asus boards even have headphone amps built in for 600ohm cans.

Quote from Forbin :http://pcpartpicker.com/p/1zSrq

The P8B75-M LE was about $75 USD. Why would I need more expansion features than this mobo has? I have no need for overclocking, and it has plenty of room for all my cards. SLI is more trouble than it's worth, IMO.

Two RAM slots and a single 6Gb/s SATA port? Well okay, if that's enough for you, then it is. For majority of the people, 150-200 euros is the sweet spot for a great motherboard with features that will last for years. 4+ SATA 6Gb/s ports, 6+ USB3's, all PWM fan headers so you can run all your fans at dead silent 500 RPM on idle, high quality built in sound cards are also finally starting to be included. You won't find those features on a cheap mobo.

Quote from Forbin :Also, the capacitor plague is over.

I have to disagree, with my friends cheapo ASRock bulging its caps after just one year of use.

You should never go cheap on a mobo anyway. Proper high quality caps and expansion features pay off in the long run.

Tested how regular grey fans would look like, noisy but much nicer.

Quote from cargame.nl :Again, needs DX9, not possible at this stage

I wasn't talking about doing it now, but in fact when LFS with DX9 is a reality.

LFS wouldn't even need much graphical changes to look fresh and modern again.

Environment mapped dynamic reflections for cars, lighting engine refresh (for day/night changes, cockpit shadows and road surface sun glare), motion blurred wheels and that would be pretty much it.

Mozilla (Firefox) and Google (Chrome) will also stop making updates for XP.

I think W7 strikes a great balance, whereas W8 is a terrible confusing mess. The fact that 8.1 literally broke mouse inputs for many games says how much MS cares for gamers with their touch designed OS.

5S 32 gigs in space grey. Wasn't sure how going back to IOS would feel after couple years of nothing but android, but I actually really like it!

Can use phone with one hand again which is a refreshing feeling.

Christ, that skidding sound in the Pagani video. It's like 70's american car chase movies all over again. Same with the BOV sound, still the same one from GT2 is it?

Regarding engine noise, this is still true it seems. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WCRi8bP0MGE

Quote from Scawen :I'm disappointed that I can't find any simple version of the Oculus SDK. I really just need to know a few values about the device's screen and the user's IPD. Also the current yaw, pitch and roll of the user's head. But they have only provided this massive bloatware SDK full of things I don't need.

Ah, that's a real pity. I do hope you'll go with the SDK/DX9 route at some point though, as it does also use other variables with the profiler to calculate the correct viewpoint, such as your real life height and the gender (whatever effect that has).

Edit: Attached screenshot of the profiler I meant.

Quote from CodeLyoko1 :Also about the oculus, it isn't supposed to come at the end of 2014. The release it when it's finished. It is even possible that it comes out end 2013, altough highely unlikely.

Not quite. The 1080p dev kit (which anyone can buy) is due around Q3 2013-Q1 2014 according to the latest news. Final consumer version propably around Q4 2014, there's no official release date for it.

Also, the moaning above is unbelievable. We finally know for that there are atleast new tracks in the release pipeline and Scawen is semi-actively back at the forums too. Be happy for once?

Nice work. Just a question though, once you'll update LFS to DX9, will you also switch to the official Rift SDK with native tracking/IPD adjustment and rest of the bells and whistles or stick with your own solution?

Had a bit of a white theme going with the 600T case, the red details of this motherboard just ruin the pure black/white theme. I'm thinking about going with the cheapo Corsair black frame/grey bladed fans at some point if they make PWM versions of them, with those the grey braided cables would look somewhat unified. Will see.

I should propably also switch to the Rampage IV Black edition motherboard soon too, could ditch this discrete sound card with that as the Black edition has a decent built in headphone amp and a proper DAC. X79 mobos just aren't cheap.

AAAANYWAYS, rather than continue with the troll, I'll attempt swinging this thread back on to the rails.

I miss the look of IBC's of my old power supply. Might end up sleeving these Seasonic cables with paracord soon enough, just need to choose a colour, red feels a bit overplayed nowadays. Gray?

I just find the online missions to be extremely repetetive compared to the variety of SP, nothing else to it really. Just want to have enough money for that damn Stinger GT!

Saw this elsewhere, don't mess with a train!

Quote from ATC Quicksilver :To do heists, or at least host them, you need a high end apartment with that room. Lester even tells you that during one of his annoying phone calls.

Thought so too, I do hope they will patch in the heists sooner rather than later. Getting big money without them feels like a meaningless grind with the current low risk missions. But being R*, I bet the MP heist rewards aren't going to be near as generous as in SP. No one would buy the virtual currency then if that was the case.

Quote from Shotglass :the fact that you think theres any other interpretation shows that you know **** all about the german psyche

and youve already shit the bed as hard as humanly possible with that post of yours its too late to try to turn this around and try to paint me as the bad guy

You did make me wonder did all germans take my post in such a way, so I showed this thread to four of my german friends and asked for their opinion. None of them read it with any secret racist meaning in it until your post. Due to the seriousness of the matter at hand, I will however apologize if that's how you (or any other offended germans) honestly took my post, because that is not what I intended to mean with it at all.

Looking back, this whole taste "argument" is pretty comical come to think of it.

If it makes someone smile that they have a windowed PC case, if it makes someone smile to wear large clocks or use golden phones, what is it to you? Why do you care? Why does it personally bother you? Do you not want other people to be happy, regardless of their arguable "taste"? Should everyone on the planet only follow the righteous taste of Shotglass and nothing else, even if it makes them miserable? Do you not have better things to do with your life, than sit around lamenting what other people wear and do?

Or could it just be that you're picking a pointless forum fight? I believe they call people like that trolls.

The high end apartments also clearly have a planning room in them aswell, I'd wager it's going to be used once the heist update arrives.
