Quote from thisnameistaken :Keep sneaking into his house and turning the heating down, or turning off the hot water supply while he's in the shower, or putting all his socks in a bowl of water so he has to leave the house with wet socks on. Then he'll continuously have a cold, and he'll get a chest infection, and he'll have to go to the doctor for a course of antibiotics.

Repeat this for a few years (maybe decades) and eventually the antibiotics won't work any more and he'll die of bronchitis. Nobody will ever suspect a thing!

I like that idea, I think you should do that!

Quote from [RF]-art555 :I'm not quite sure about your case, but maybe you have driver's conflicts? I used to had it on my old PC, and it was giving some very nasty results in some (not all) applications. Maybe uninstalling ALL the drivers and install them again might work?

Definately not driver conflicts as I re-installed windows due to hardware changes about 3 weeks ago.

Quote from wien :Thanks. That is curious though. I assume you're using the exact same settings on both? Under the screen, graphics and misc tabs? (I'm sure you did, but it's the only thing I can think of. Worth double checking anyway. Copying the cfg.txt from X to Y should do it.)

I just can't for the life of me figure out why it does that. If there was a legitimate FPS drop we should all be seeing it. The changes to the AI would not impact CPU usage when playing alone, and there aren't really any other major changes I'm aware of. South City getting an FPS drop is normal and expected, but the other tracks... A driver issue only triggered by patch Y is possible of course, but still a bit weird because of the few changes between patches.

Yeah I'm using same settings for both, I even put the full texture option (or whatever it is) on in X and still had a better frame rate than Y. in Y i have them off.

It's a strange problem indeed, as it's a rare thing it seems. It's not my only problem with patch Y (i hate this 'clutch' thing too) but that's not for this thread.

As a side note, I've also tried patch Y with Hyper-Threading on and off on my CPU and had no difference.

right I managed to try patch X and Y in single player last night and compare them. On all tracks (apart from South City) there's an fps drop of between 5 and 20fps. On South City there's a drop of 40-50fps. (by myself on-track, no AI).

To sum it up:
X runs fine, not a problem with it at all.
Y is un-playable at times - especially on South City.

I also tried a few different drivers I was using nvidia drivers that I downloaded from their website in November. I tried the ones on the CD supplied (yes I removed them properly first), and then tried the latest driver.

The latest driver gave an fps boost on Y, but it wasn't noticable at all. from 10-20fps on South City I got a boost of an extra 5fps on top of it.

WHY do people do that kind of thing? it looks and sounds awful!

I like annoying people like that in my car, i know at 1.6l it's got nearly twice the power/weight ratio of their shitty cars.

Quote from wien :Would you mind trying a clean install of the X-patch (or older) now and see if you do indeed get better framerates there? Just to make sure Patch Y introduced the problem...

Also, when you say you get poor performance with 20 people on the grid, do you mean 20 AI or 20 people online? Have you touched the dynamic LOD reduction at all?

The fact that you're both using a 7600GS looks a bit suspicious to me though.

Online... I did mention CTRA server.

I can't use patch X as far as I'm aware due to the auto-update system which would just patch it back to Y again. I've not touched LOD reduction. Why should I? it was working fine in patch X with as mentioned above, higher res textures etc.

The 7600GS shouldn't have anything to do with it... LFS is DirectX 8 graphics, I've played rFactor in DX8 and have no performance issues, and I am currently playing it in DX9 mode with 4xAA 2xAF and all high or max detail settings (apart from Shadows) and STILL getting >40fps even with a grid of 15 cars on a very high detail mod and high detal track (Porsche Carrera Cup 2007 + Laguna Seca).

I think it's just the fact that LFS is demanding too much from processors... IMO the min specs should be upped on the website to Dual Core 2.0GHz+

I'll be an LFS racer converted to rFactor within the next month if it continues like this... no point on playing a game that my computer won't play.

Quote from March Hare :mr_x, did your troubles start after that re-install or prior to it?
If yes it might be a dodgy install.
If no then propably an LFS bug. Something to do with the Direct-X version maybe.

I confess! I did over exaggerated a bit on the re-install frequency.

Good point about the drivers.

It happened as soon as I put patch Y on.

I re-installed in the first week of January, and there was no difference in performance. As I've said already, all my other games (rfactor, RACE07) run perfectly. All drivers are the same as pre-patch Y. I had to change some components (from Athlon XP3200+ to a P4 3.06) as my old motherboard died - this was the reason for re-install. But I also had the same low-FPS problem with my Athlon aswell - so it's not JUST an Intel problem.

Quote from March Hare :How long since you last reinstalled your windows?

This should be done yearly. Or monthly depending on usage.

Do you shutdown the computer for the night?

I work as a computer technician for a living. My computer stays on overnight and I tend to restart it every 2-3 days. It was last formatted and re-installed about 3 weeks ago, usually I do it once every 3-4 months.

Although I am aware this is probably aimed at the OP, so ignore me.

How are you guys with empty space on your hard drives?

Main C: drive has ~100GB free (250GB drive) - it's where LFS is installed.

Quote from The Very End :And just a little othing thing too, if you playing only SO tracks, you`ll notice FPS drop on around 30 FPS, so if you only have tried SO tracks the last days, try a other one and see how the FPS is there.

I was racing on FE Club with XFG/XRG on CTRA last night, I did 1 race and gave up because it was unplayable.

I originally thought it was just SO (see thread in 'track bugs' section), but it's not, it seems like every single track now.

I have exactly the same problem with:

P4 3.06GHz
2GB DDR400
GeForce 7600GS

Before patch Y I had addons and all sorts (AA etc.), now on a fresh LFS install, no AA no AF, no texture addons, just a clean LFS install, 512x512 skins, low-res textures. A full grid on FE Club (well 20 cars) just doesn't work anymore. 10-20fps... unplayable.

No, spyware isn't the problem, no viruses aren't a problem, no I don't need to re-install windows (it has been done since patch Y), and yes ALL other games i've played are just fine. The problem lies within LFS since patch Y.

Storm Racing and Sonic Realms racing have both existed for quite a while as far as I'm aware, and they both have very different colour tags too. And I've never seen them have a problem with each other either.

As it's looking like one of the more expensive options in the poll, can you add me to the official spectators list please Ben.

I'll see if I can bring a camera along with me and get some pics.

It's things like this that make me realise why insurance prices are so high in the UK and why insurance companies won't insure young drivers on powerful cars. The fact our roads are probably more dangerous than US roads (they have corners in them, narrower and single track roads etc.) most likely plays a factor in it.

The most powerful car i've driven is my current 1.6l Ford Focus. My dad has a 2.2l TD Laguna which his company insurance won't insure me on at all, or any other insurance companies for that matter. I'm 20 in March and I passed my test 2 1/2 years ago with no claims on car insurance (apart from a window in December which aparently doesn't count), yet still my insurance is £1200.

Just goes to show that other places *cough*USA*cough* should discourage younger drivers from driving such big powerful cars more.

Found a couple of fonts that might work with some minimal editing:
This and this. There's one that's even closer to the real font, called Chocolate Layer, but it's not free.

Cheers mate.

It's looking more and more likely that I'll have to make one from scratch.

I might buy a box of them and try scanning it to make one. It should help a fair bit!

Quote from Bob Smith :If you are staying the night, I would presume you will be joining those of us who will be going out in Newcastle later that evening. Newcastle is only 15 miles from the circuit, not too far I think.

There are plenty of hotels in Newcastle, I'll do some digging and post up a list of a few cheaper ones later tonight.

For the ultimate cheapskate I have a three sleeping bags and airbeds (and a large lounge to put them in) that people are welcome to use for the night, and even a spare bedroom (although the spare room and one of the bags is already reserved)... if you feel comfortable staying with someone you've never met that is.

It also might be worth having a look at hotels in Durham too. As Houghton-Le-Spring isn't too far away from Durham either.

Avoid hotels in Sunderland though (althuogh I might be biased).
