On the one hand we have 'the resistance' (essentially a bunch of faith-addled millenarians who, consciously or not, are camouflaging a parsimonious, small-minded nationalism with appeals for economic austerity, moral living etc), and on the other 'the establishment', who have always taken any opportunity to chastise the working class for its immorality and wastefulness, while protecting its own extravagant interests.
Its the bane of the era in which we live: the dominant conflicts are always between two or more brands of oppressive conservatism. The rest of us are left with the sole option of standing back, watching them eat other, and picking through the detritus to remake our world once 'they' are gone.
Some will die in hot pursuit
In fiery auto crashes
Some will die in hot pursuit
While sifting through my ashes
Some will fall in love with life
And drink it from a fountain
That is pouring like an avalanche
Coming down the mountain
Familiarity may be an issue, but to look at other tracks: Blackwood reversed - a blind crest before a left/right combo? As turn one? Genius. Kyoto reversed: just after the long curve there's a deceptive little complex before you go under the bridge, through which you really have to judge your speed carefully. And I never fail to enjoy that blind and twisty downhill section. Kyoto forwards: ...Hmmm... Its ok....
ROFL... I've lost more bits of me than its worth keeping track of, including a short and temporary spell of (medically induced) blindness some years back. Glad to say that my biological purpose of having fun (I'll leave the reproducing to the designated breeders), is, while faltering occasionally, still intact!
My experience told me one thing; I'd rather be blind than deaf. I adapted pretty quickly, and life carried on as normal. But if I couldn't hear, there's so much that I would miss.
I'm not really talking about emotional attachment, but saying that if the physics are modelled from 'real life', then it only benefits the track design if it is modelled from real landscape. It doesn't even have to be an officially sanctioned track; perhaps a local road that is dressed up to be a track.
As an artist myself I can tell when things have been cooked up from fantasy. There are parts of LFS tracks (in South City for example) that ring the 'real' bell when I drive them. But there are many more parts that just say 'this is second rate fantasy', and it breaks the spell for me every time.
Because too many people round here bandy the word 'real' around like some sacred totem.
EDIT:
Something I've noticed about LFS tracks is that the reverse layouts often have lots more interesting stuff going on in them. This, I suspect, is because the maker works in a fairly linear manner... The reverse layout isn't subect to his conscious intentions. Real landscape isn't either... That's why I think it would be better.
The obsession with 'reality' round these parts just leaves me utterly bemused. Come on, if you want REALITY don't **** around on a simulator... Buy a car and go racing (and in that respect, Tristan, you have led by example!).
Despite its graphic limitations, GPL remains utterly immersive, because in my opinion, it is a 'proper sport' that relates to the real world via its limited ability to represent reality.
In other words it doesn't ache, like an adolescent hankering after his first lay, to be 'real'. GPL will always be more immersive than LFS for me, because of the historical depth and the very adult way in which that history is related (just go and have a look at the drawings that were done prior to producing the Montjuich track...). But, Tristan, you are absolutely right in saying that the physics model doesn't mean anything if the tracks aren't right. And LFS' tracks need to be related to something 'real', just in the same way that every kind of artwork needs to be drawn from real life, not adolescent fantasy.
Even with pixel perfect, virtual accuracy, so long as you're looking at a screen (whether its a 360 degree wrap-around, spherical surface, or a snazzy pair of glasses that trace holograms into your eyeballs), you are going to be in a fiction.
Jesus... Four pages... There's no way I can be bothered to read that, so sorry if this has already been said.... BUT, why do people get so upset about this, while the GTRs probably have a cupholder hidden somewhere by clock. Realism, my fanny...
If someone can actually be arsed to do a graphic job on the driver, then all I can say is "well done!". Now have a go at the dashboard.
Maybe someone will correct me on this, but I believe that's Montlhéry, just outside of Paris. It's drastically shortened from its former glory (If still in use at all... anyone know? This footage looks recent....)
Simkazz, you are a genius! Put all the shitty LFS arguments in one thread: drifters v racers; awd v rwd; cracker witch hunts... anyone got anything else to add?
I haven't been online for a while, but most of the time, in my experience, spammers were just people who had a hard time overtaking and thought 'blue flag' was some kind of magic incantation that allowed them to get that golden lap time they were after.
No respect for other racers, and no respect for the elements that constitute racing.
