I don't think we should shy away from having LFS compared or reviewed based on it being 'alpha'. It is extremely feature rich and stable software which puts many commercial releases to shame.

In such reviews it is valid to point out features which may be missing or very basic in LFS, as long as it is made clear that it's a product continually being developed. You can't moan that LFS doesn't get the exposure or full-on reviews for being alpha, and then pull out the 'it's still alpha' when something is criticised.

rF and LFS are both getting continual updates and improvements. Both are for sale and effectively released. It seems, at least for the near future, rFactor is not being totally abbandoned for the next project, and barring disaster LFS has a development plan stretching for quite a few more years.

The development plan of LFS is quite different than most sims, but I think continually using 'it's still alpha' when there is valid criticism or comparrison, can wear a little thin in the sim racing community.

As to the ASS review, I'll probably try to read it later, but it's not sounding like it made any great steps forward from their usual quality. I've not driven the BF1 much, and even less the BMW in rF, but like with all the other cars, LFS left me feeling I was driving a car in contact with the road and rF didn't have the same success.....

Although it's always a shame for mechanical problems to interfere with a race, it is part of motor racing, along with inequality of cars, tyres, etc.

Having said that, it sort of goes some way to balance the points lost by Alonso in Hungary and Monza. Alonso's Hungary failure lost him 11 points to Schumacher and now Japan pretty much cancels this out, with Alonso gaining 12 points on Schumacher.

This would just leave Alonso's lost 6 points to mechanical failure at Monza, with which he'd already be champion.

Both the combinations of Schumacher/Ferrari and Alonso/Renault have clearly been the class of the field, and both are certainly deserving of fighting for the championship into the final round. Maybe Alonso's position, where his mistake or a Renault reliability issue seem to be the only way not to win the championship in Brazil, is the fair result of the season overall.

Quote from Nick_ll :
If only Kimi's car could be reliable for once in the last 2 races it could mix things up a bit.

Kimi/McLaren could mix it with the Championship contenders for the last two races but I'm sure Kimi and McLaren would be out to get results for themselves, rather than thinking of helping Renault or Ferrari. It's getting dangerously close to the first season in about a decade without a McLaren win, and that would hurt.

I could sort of understand if McLaren would prefer it if Alonso took the WDC, as they'd have all the marketing benefit of having the WC in their car. Kimi on the otherhand might not want his future team and MS to take another Ferrari championship, as it sort of makes the expectations for 2007 even higher. He'd have more glory bringing the championship back to Ferrari after two years of missing out than just following on from where Schumacher left off.

Whether Kimi does finish this year fighting Alonso and Schumacher for the wins, he must be favourite for 2007. Beating Massa shouldn't be a problem, and beating an Alonso handicapped by McLaren reliability should be easy enough, and with Renault relying on the the unproven Kovalainen, it is looking good for Kimi.

Quote from Becky Rose :There are things I want to do with LFSC to improve the footage of the races, a time coded position ticker being one of them for instance, i'm still figuring out the best way to work that. LFSC has a lot of it's own issues to solve and work that it needs so it's all a matter of one thing at a time.

I'll tell you what I do have though, I have a dozen cameragirls on the track at once.

Yup. I do. They're all me

I record each race in full from numerous static cameras, throw in a few standard LFS cameras where I tab up/down the action, and this time some custom camera angle onboard shots.

Then this time (although this wasnt ready at round 1 and is still untested) I play back up to 12 streams simultaneously onscreen and pick which one I want to watch, it then plays back a little output window with the camera switches that I fraps and voila I have a rough edit telling me which camera I wanted to show.

Crikey! The amount of work involved makes the end result even more impressive

Maybe the Ferrari has the old LFS aero bug? It's the only way I can see how Alonso could have been considered to impede Massa.

Quote from keiran :I don't understand this post... Alonso hasn't come out saying anything yet and if he had the Media would have snapped it up.

Alonso was about 100 metres ahead of Massa, in the onboard video you can't even make his car out, I bet Massa didn't even know who it was.

Keiran

Alonso was quoted before the punishment:

"There is nothing to say. I think we need to wait until after the GP2 race to see.
Massa complained about me blocking his lap. I did my out lap to the maximum but I didn't block anyone.
He was 300 to 400 metres behind me so he got a better tow off me. There should be no complaint."

I haven't seen anything from Alonso since the punishment, but Pat Symonds has spoken his mind....and I can't blame him.

I've found a few photos from the 2001 Goodwood Revival, and one of the Bentley at the 2001 Festival of speed. The quality isn't great as they're scans of photos from before I had a digital camera. I used the shot of the pit straight as my wallpaper for ages. I really liked how it looked old, but note the half mast US flags. This was less than a week after the 911 attacks.

Some photos from yesterday. Some pre'41 racing cars and some 55-63 formula cars. Don't ask me what they are - I was too cheap to spend the $7 for the program...

I like Lime Rock, because like Goodwood, there are some places you can get close to the track without all the catch fencing at the bigger tracks.

Was at the Rolex Vintage Festival at Lime Rock yesterday. I used to go to the Goodwood Revival every year, but now I'm in the US I make do with Lime Rock. It's pretty good, but has got more and more fixated with the big mustang and camaro trans am cars from the late 60s and early 70s.

These two beasts were there in 2004, but nothing as big as the Bentley. The guy in the blue/yellow #29 was really pushing it around. Not sure what either are, as I can't find the program.

Haven't downloaded all the photos off my camera from this year yet

Quote from sil3ntwar :More like he would have had first.

Very true. That was the main reason I was glad Schumacher didn't get past Alonso, because if he did, it's almost certain Massa would have suffered 'brake problems' in the last few laps (remember Irvine 6 or 7 years ago). It would have been criminal to see Massa have to give up his first win, especially in loyalty to a team who seem unwilling to commit to him beyond 2006 until Schumacher and Kimi make up their minds.

The order they finished was the order they deserved, all things considered. Schumacher suffered a little under the SC due to the stacking in the pits, but that's the way it falls when your teammate's ahead in those circumstances. If they'd left Massa out for an extra lap, the likely result was Scumacher 1st and Alonso 2nd, which is only gaining 2 points. Ferrari played for 4 and lost the gamble due to Schumacher's (very satisfying) mistake at turn 8. Alonso's defense for the last 15 laps was great to watch, especially as it was on a track where overtaking is very possible.

The Ferrari/Bridgestone package is now looking like the stronger package, so unlike those who wanted the championship closed up for the championship's sake, I think the current gap is better for a close battle to the end. Had Schumacher closed the gap to 6 points, it would be looking like a fairly easy championship for him, even without support from Massa. As it stands (and with reliability from Ferrari and Renault), he's really got to go out and earn it.

Quote from KiDCoDEa :imho natural point should just stop deving trackir (its getting a bit ridiculous like rocky5) and dedicate themselves at making the cheapest widescreen vr googles with headtracking and headphones/mic.
1280x480 or 1600x600 for example.
trackir concept is a joke to me. its execution is well crafted though.

The majority of TrackIR's customers are flight sim fans, and for that application I'd say trackIR is hard to beat.

For me though, trackIR has never worked in racing sims without the major drawback of loosing some accuracy with the visual feedback, which is a major component for 'feeling' what the car is doing.

Quote from Burnzoire :btw I don't understand what was said about losing the 'feel' for the car when using track IR... the view still bops all over the place and you can still feel when the car slides around, and most of the time I'm looking dead ahead anyway. TrackIR doesn't 'disconnect' you from the driver's head.

As I said above, for me a large part of the 'feel' for what the car is doing is from visual feedback. I find (with how I've setup the trackIR software) I loose some of the precision of this feedback as some of the onscreen movement is head movement and not how the car is moving relative to the track/surroundings. I am willing to give trackIR another try if someone who 'can't live without it' could share their trackIR profile. I have v4 software/drivers with the vector expansion.

Quote from CSU1 :TrackIR is the sillyest damn invention ever! You turn your head left to look left right!, but your eyeballs are still looking right, right!illepall
Damn stupid if you ask me.

For games where the importance of the visual feedback isn't so high as in a car race sim, the TrackIR works well. Moving the head, but keeping the eyes on the screen actually comes quite naturally after not too much practice. I was sceptical until I tried it.

Quote from CSU1 :Hold on! How are you suposed to look behind you with trackIR? turn your head 180 degrees???illepall

The amount the virtual head turns compared to the amount you turn your head in real life is customisable in the TrackIR profile software. You can create deadzones, change the linearity and amount of head movement required. To look behind, you typically only turn your head 30 degrees. You still have to see the computer screen.

Quote from Kleppa :I've used TrackIR all the time i've raced in LFS, and i can't race without it. Also my keys at the wheel are all used for other things. Making TrackIR usefull depends on how good your TrackIR setup is, and one hint is to set fixed y-angle, and have the center area with zero acceleration.

I suspected some of my problem was finding a better setup for racing. Do you have a good profile for LFS you could post? I'm always willing to give it another try in LFS. I just can't afford to loose the accuracy of the visual feedback of the car's movement that I lost with the trackIR often picking unintentional movement. I used to find the situational awareness great in close battles, but found the benefits were far outweighed by slower lap times and increased risk of spins.

Quote from Burnzoire :so that's 2/2 who don't use their's in LFS, why not? I find it a bit of a pain sometimes but definately worth it in races for better situational awareness (but I still hit people, doh). For hotlapping or practice I turn it off though.

I voted no. I own one but don't use it in LFS. As LFS is the only 'game' I currently play regularly, the trackIR isn't currently used.

I find that with the trackIR I have less feeling for how the car is moving around. Without actually 'feeling' the car (except for the limited feedback from the wheel) I'm very reliant on visual feedback for when the car is beginning to understeer or oversteer. With the trackIR any slight head movement reduces the ability to pick up on how the car is moving.

The extra situational awareness gained with the trackIR is far outweighed by this reduction in 'feeling' which (for me) resulted in slower lap times and increased risk of not catching slides or over correcting. I also often found the trackIR more tiring and I was more likely to get a headache using it.

The trackIR software does allow for adjusting thresholds and sensitivity, so you can create a profile that only looks left and right with exagerated head movement. In the end though, I've never been bothered to find the best compromise, and just map look left/right to two wheel buttons.

Quote from Becky Rose :

Virtual Motorsports has folded so at the moment we have no actual press to release too, I have been in talks with some other media firms but currently nothing has come of it. Instead we might have a race report on the website.

That's a shame, but the first issue was probably too similar to ASS. Speaking of ASS, would they publish the race report? They were asking for LFS submissions a while back.

Quote from Vain :I thought so too, because I remember an RB4 driver complaining that Thomm should have driven slower in round 1. But Becky said the XRT was midfield...

Vain

That was me! The RB4 would have definitely been backmarker if it wasn't for Thomm .With the current classification system, if Thomm sandbags a bit, he'd rack up more points!

I'm wondering whether the class of the cars should be determined by an average of the top three of each class heat in round1, to even things out a bit. Thomm (who's pace in the RB4 seems to be a freak of nature :razz is otherwise going to ensure the RB4 is never classed as a backmarker!

Most of us who've been licenced for quite a while probably don't know the state of the current demo servers. I know I don't.

I started playing when there was only a demo, so all racers (good, bad, serious and causal) were on demo servers. When S1 was released most of the serious (and usually clean) racers bought their licence and said goodbye to demo servers. Until the S2 demo was released, of course, but then most of the names you knew from S1 were racing the demo and hosting races, so you could usually find some good servers.

I can imagine the current demo servers could be quite messy....

Before I go to bed, many thanks to Becky for the effort putting the STCC into reality. Despite forum and server problems, I think it got off to a great start. Thumbs up

This is my first league experience (as my STCC entry page so succinctly points out) I fully enjoyed the first race and hope the rest of the season is a success.

I was wondering whether league organisers usually put so much time in to investigate every bump and scrape. Sure requires a lot of dedication to trawl through the replays Nod but it also gives it a feeling of reality and seriousness - just hope you don't hand out large fines like the FIA Big grin

Not that I have a say on the matter but I support Dustin's view on this. The other car (7) had already hit the kerb and slowed suddenly, and Dustin, in a bit of a slide had no way of reacting.
