I agree with you totally. The helmets look good and allow the imagination to do the rest.

Looks like this weekend's Silverstone GP masters race will be broadcast live on the internet (except Germany) for those who don't get TV coverage. It's a reasonable 3 quid: http://www.gpmasters.com/watchonline.htm

Damon Hill was testing today http://www.latphoto.co.uk/inde ... p;show=12&x=0&y=0 maybe he'll decide to actually race

Quote from J.B. :
I haven't been following Jacques closely this year, can anybody post his qualifying results against Heidfeld's? Was he really that bad?

It's probably not a case of being particularly bad, but rather he wasn't blowing him away. Heidfeld's a solid if unremarkable F1 driver, and maybe they want to find the next star to fill the other seat.

This gives them the chance to see if Kubica fits the bill, and enough time to look elsewhere for 2007 if not.

If all JV was bringing to F1 was a slightly less bland personality, then it probably is time to move over. Afterall, we still have DC to come up with the 'you can only pee with the cock you've got' type comments to keep it from being too bland....

Quote from thisnameistaken :Webber will be a good fit with RBR I think. DC may find himself getting embarrassed a lot in qualifying though.

DC's not that bad at qualifying. He's held up quite well against a couple of fast Finns, and only started to look particularly troubled during the single lap qualifying era.

His race craft should allow him to hold his own with Webber even if he slots in a few spaces back on the grid. A good solid pairing for Red Bull, I think...

Only the BMW's were checked to ensure they 'respected the minimum weight of 600Kg at all times'. This is done by draining and weighing the fuel left in the tank and subtracting it from the car's finishing weight.

The Ferrari was weighed (as were all classified cars), but not drained of fuel....

Quote from Jakg :
it wasnt a proper win for Button (last 10 laps were just cruising), and the best drivers all suffered incidents, but even without that he still would of got a good place

Looking beyond the bizarre penalties for Schumacher and Alonso (for which Button's 10 place grid penalty was comparable anyway), Button seemed to have the pace to beat all but Alonso, and even that was looking interesting after the SC.

Kimi had some good pace early (but not startling considering all his principle rivals were making their way through the field) but seemed to drop way off the pace after his first stop.

Button's was as 'proper' as a win in a dominant car.

Quote from Jertje :Uhhh, I think he did very well for his debute. A first race in F1 can't be easy, and the circumstances sure as hell weren't helping.

I think he did OK, but (here on Speed Channel) the constant praise just seemed a little out of proportion, especially considering where his teammate was putting the BMW.

What I was more impressed by was Kubica's amazingly (for an F1 driver) honest self appraisal after the race: "The result is good, but my driving today was not. I made too many mistakes"

That sort of approach is probably going to impress BMW after listening to JV blame everything but himself

Faultless drive from Button. Throw in a little luck and he gets a well deserved win. Well done to Honda too, who've had a difficult few races recently. An F1 driver is often at the mercy of the machinery, but Button certainly had the Honda where it needed to be when others faltered. He had the pace, passed people and overcame an engine change grid penalty. Well done Jenson

Alonso drove an aggresive but controlled race through the field to take a commanding lead. His lead looked safe even after the SC wiped out much of his advantage and he was looking well placed to take the maximum points before his problem. Schumacher drove through some serious tyre issues, but to come away with more points than Alonso would have been a bit jammy. Maybe his retirement was self induced (Speed TV missed the Heidfeld-Schumacher incident) but it certainly seemed 'right' that the points difference between MS and FA wastn't closed further, especially after Alonso's strong drive.

De la Rosa deserved a podium, was right on Kimi's tail when the Finn was caught out by Liuzzi, and passed the troubled Schumacher. Heidfeld also drove a solid race, typically under the radar for most of the race. Kubica, his much talked about teammate had a much messier race, and seemed to get a little more praise than was due. I could understand the coverage if he'd blown Nick away, but Nick had the upper hand throughout.illepall

Overall the rain (and not to forget the FIA) spiced up the Hungarian GP and it was the best race for quite a while. If the FIA can organise rain a few more times this year, I for one will be happy

Quote from Unclefloug :i may be imaginging things but im sure i heard on the ITV coverage at last weekends German GP that 6-7 of the teams are using systems like this?

The full statement by the Stewards did state that 7 teams were known to have used a nose mounted mass damper system this year.

It is thought that Michelin teams gain the most from it due to the sidewall construction not being as stiff as the Bridgestone. Also Renault, having been the first to introduce the system in September 2005, probably loose the most from not using it. They probably have little to no experience running the R26 without the system.

Here's my summary of the mass damper affair:

Renault first introduced the mass damper around September last year, so only had it for the last few races of the 2005 championship. The FIA's technical delegate was quite happy with it then and made no moves to outlaw it for 2006. The rules governing movable parts which have influence on the aero have not significantly changed from last year either.

The FIA now say they have 'evidence' that the principle purpose of the systems (as currently developed) is to influence aero performance, and as the damper moves and is not rigidly fixed to the sprung part of the car, the FIA have moved to ban the mass damper. The FIA will not divulge the nature or the source of the evidence they based their ruling on.

At the German GP Renault presented the test car for scrutineering with the damper still fitted. They then introduced evidence that showed the principle benefit of the mass damper was to improve mechanical grip by reducing variation in the tyre's contact patch. They also showed data indicating the influence on aero performance was negligible, with negligible change in mean aero load and negligible change in aero load variation. The stewards, who apparently do not have access to the 'evidence' that the FIA claim to have, declared the mass damper legal. The FIA promptly appealed against the Steward's decision, and the appeal will be heard late August/early September.

Renault, although cleared to run the mass damper in Germany, chose not to, in part due to the risk of having results disqualified if the FIA's appeal of the steward's decision is successful. Renault have now got an assurance from the FIA that even if the FIA win the appeal and the mass damper is again declared illegal, that they will ask the court not to penalise teams who choose to run it in the meantime. Renault plan to use the mass damper in Hungary.

The mass damper is estimated to be approx 10Kg (and so is not a huge 'free weight' in the event of accidents) and was stated to have been used by 7 teams during 2006. This is rumoured to include Ferrari and Red Bull. The benefit of the mass damper is considered to be greater for Michelin shod teams due to the Brdgestone tyres having stiffer sidewall construction.

Conspiracy stories aside, Ferrari's Jean Todt has recently stated that Ferrari believe the system to be illegal. This is despite running the system themselves until the ban prior to the German GP. Ross Brawn, when asked if their system was as good as Renault's, said "I don't know how you judge that. It's a useful system for us. I don't know how useful it is for them. We've used it all year, but we're not using it today."

For me, the FIA's ruling is quite a large stretch, and the timing stinks. It is hard to not think it's meddling to spice up a championship. There are plenty of FIA 'pro-Ferrari' and 'anti-Michelin' conspiracies doing the rounds, but for me, without access to the FIA's confidential 'evidence', their ruling is laughable, especially as nearly every component of the car's suspension system could be outlawed for the same reasons. Also, the timing, just before a summer testing ban and in the last third of Michelin's last F1 season (where they probably don't want to throw money at tyre development) doesn't help dispel the conspiracy theories. The FIA's evidence, which must surely be presented at the appeal for it to have any credibility, will need to be rock solid, and not just be Ferrari produced data.

anyone know if there's gonna be any stream of the race somewhere on the internet? it really annoying having to wait a week after the races to watch them -_-

yeah... i noticed ITV does quite a bit of Jenson Button nuthuggery

I've seen a service offering the 4 main uk channels over the internet ( www.liveuktv.com ), but to be honest the monthly subscription is way more than the cost of the cable package that Speed channel is usually on. Also, I wasn't totally sure of it's legailty, what with UK licences, etc.

Speed have better commentary anyway, despite Brundle's best efforts to compensate for the rest of the ITV 'team'.

Normal games can't stop you from being installed on more computers for lan parties.

Many commercial games require the CD for play and legally require a CD for each PC being used, whether for single, network or online play. Whether you can get around this with no-cd patches is beside the point, as the licence for those games is not legally allowing it.

Some games supported a 'client only' option in the game, where a CD was not required but the game would only play when connecting to a host on a network. With the boom in online gaming, this type of network support is now quite rare.

I think LFS has a pretty generous licence.

Quote from Shotglass :i gather pretty much all they did was alter the tyre curves to something more realistic (according to todds posts about tyre physics at least)

ill leave the bits about playing other tracks and cars to the mods ... im not gonna get into that discussion again

It all looks a little messy anyway. As a full paying customer of GTR and GTL, it would be nice if the full GTR2 had an import function to bring everything into the latest platform, but it'd probably leave it all too easy to abuse.

If that's true, it sort of blows Simbin/Blimey's claims of huge improvements out of the water. The biggest thing seems to be the rain, which beyond the visuals, just makes the cars have less feeling.

I've had some good fun with GTR2 demo today......but the more time I spend the more I realise it hasn't moved on much from GTR. Better grip, but then again one of the GTR demos had tuned down physics that felt very similar too.

I was wondering whether you keep a log of all the past accounts you've had at RSC, and whether you'd ever divulge? It's sometimes fun reading through the old threads and watching it dawn on people who it is they're arguing about the perfection of ISI physics with.

Or do you deny everything?

See attached for how it looks using DX9 AAx4 (haven't played with in game video settings)

so far so good but if you move down the menue tree in lfs the exit button changes to a back button which it doesnt in gtr
i much prefer those tree based approaches to the same level approach of gtr

I see what you mean, the buttons for options, control, etc. display items in the same level as the main menu's window and the Exit is still available. The 'exit' only becomes 'back' once you select a game mode.

I guess I didn't notice as it didn't catch me out. I set my options in the first few minutes of running GTR2 and hadn't needed to look at them again (yet).

The cars moving on track a bit weird nothing as realistic as LFS.I would say its far from perfect.I like however moving of the car when you are in the cockipt.Seems quite realistic in this area.

FF - someone might like it but I hate it.I dont fee like in LFS that the car has actually some grip on track. Its sometimes like moving on "ice".With LFS I feel like every kg of the car. The FF in GTR2 demo is more like effects then actual input from car.
....

I agree - I've never really liked how any of the Simbin or ISI cars have appeared to move on the track. They just don't really look like they're in contact or interacting with the ground. I think this is where LFS is one of the strongest sims - GPL also looked pretty good in this area.

In car, GTR/GTR2 always felt pretty good in terms of how the cockpit looks and moves. I don't like the limited look left/right actions, but otherwise the feeling of being in the cockpit is very good.

The FFB and the actual feel of the car is, I think, quite good compared to other ISI based sims, especially rF. GTR was quite good, but had the odd seemingly random spin factor built in. GTL was also quite good. It felt quite 'floaty' but that might have been the older car's handling. It still is not close to LFS in terms of being able to perceive the car you're supposed to be driving. In this sense, LFS is again one of the strongest sims. nKp also has good potential here, but has a few querks that hopefully will be ironed out if the dev didn't run with the money.

Quote from Shotglass :ive clicked on exit about a hundred times expecting that it will take me back to the main menue instead of back to windows
might just be a problem for players used to lfs though

I thought it was pretty much the same as LFS. Click Exit in GTR2, and it asks something along the lines of whether you want to exit to Windows. Click exit in LFS and it also asks if you want to exit the program.

Some people are having problems, but so far the demo has worked smoothly for me. The UI is similar to GTR, and I've clicked through the menus quite quickly without glitch. I really like the simplistic approach taken by LFS, but GTR2 isn't bad. I find it easier to navigate than rFactor.

Setup took about 2 minutes, selecting my controller buttons, switching it to simulation mode, turning the mirrors on and turning all help off (except for auto clutch). Beyond the GTR2 configuration utility and an nVidia sli profile, I haven't played with video settings.

The frame rate performance is actually, for me, similar to LFS and with a grid of cars, slightly better. At 1920x1200 and Vsynced to 60, I get a solid 60 in single car time trials. This is with DX9 or DX8 and with AA set to level 4. I've not tried the rain extensively, although it did slow a little. As I wasn't impressed (beyond a few pretty effects when watching the replays) by the rain implementation, I can imagine I'll stay away from that option anyway.

With DX8 and a grid of 15, starting from the back, I had about 50-55 fps until the grid spaced out a bit. With DX9, it dropped to about 40 at the start, but was still running smooth. This fairs favourably with LFS, which can dip into the 30s at the start. I'd probably stick to DX8, as it looked fine, and I'm not in huge need for the extra lighting effects.

GTR2 may be making more of my hardware than LFS - I didn't see a huge improvement in LFS when I switched from an Athlon 3200+ with Radeon 9700pro to an Athlon64 4400 X2 with 2x geforce 78000GTX sli. Most other games run way better on my newer system, and LFS probably gained the least. This might just show how well LFS runs (and is optimised?) on lower end systems.
