Quote from Nathan_French_14 :Smove, is there any chance i can fix the rear indicators myself, if your ok with that?

You can try to fix them of course, but I will try to find a solution for that as well with my forthcoming update. Anyway, I'm curious about your achievement.

Quote from unseen :Not too bad at all. I`d have done it in 2048x for better detail, but it works nicely as it is. You missed the little triangular area at the top between the back seats and the boot though

Thanks for the comments, guys!

It is planned to redo the whole interior in a higher resolution and with a lot more details, hopefully before the FXO will get an upgraded cockpit model. I already did an hour-long photo session this weekend ...
Update: Audi A4 styled interior for FXO - revised

After a recent debate about plagiarism I decided to post "my" Audi A4 (2004 model) interior for the FXO - which is indeed Audi's copyrighted work and was just magically dragged & dropped into LFS by me. And hey, it works, so I'd like to share it! Critics and comments are welcome, as always.

Note 1: Pack contains lightset posted here.
Note 2: Gator and steering wheel are not my work and thus are not included.

Installation:
Since mediafire.com and most of the other file hosters don't save our files forever (if you don't pay :razz I decided to split the files into a self-extracting RAR file (should do without WinRAR itself) and upload it here to the forum.

Since the forum doesn't allow uploading *.exe files (which is needed here), I had to rename the concerning file. Simply download both the files into the same folder, delete the ".rar" from the file name "fxo_dds_by_smove.part01.exe.rar" and double-click the .exe. Now choose where to install - Don't forget to backup your old files first!) - ready to go to the DDS folder!

I hope to camouflage an exe isn't against the rules - otherwise I'll remove the file, of course.

Enjoy - forever if you like!

Edit: Due to requests I worked out working rear indicators which are added to the file.

Quote from mrodgers :Quite some knowledge

You are absolutely right, though the photograph was manipulated a lot: In the original picture the inside of the car was way darker, whereas the outside was a lot brighter. I did quite some editing here.

But I don't think boosterfire means the way LFS does the "exposure" that you've described very well, but how light and shadow are drawn generally: in a way to soft manner. There are nearly no hard shadows visible (maybe under the car, admittedly) and only slightly visible sun & shadow changes from within the cockpit. But take a drive along an alley when the sun is shining: It darkens and brightens and darkens and brightens again in such a fast and strong way that your eyes get tired after some minutes or even seconds. I think GT4 might be the benchmark there from what I have seen. Another problem may be the glass pane in front of the main display with its absolutely needless reflections - car makers choose the angle of this pane exactly to avoid this effect.

So yes, lighting needs improvements, but first things first.

Scirocco road test + photos

S3 licensed
A couple of weeks ago I had the pleasure to test drive the new Scirocco ("just" the 1.4 litre 160 bhp version though) and therefore want to share this experience with you, even if this is going to be a rather emotional than technical review.

In my view the most fun part of the car is the chassis, being convenient enough for cruising the highways and rolling across cobblestone but that will show its claws if you drive it a bit quicker around corners - which it does very well! The steering wheel requires a bit more force to be turned than the most "normal" compact cars of today, what I consider as an advantage and more secure. If you're driving around corners quickly you get the feeling the car still pulls to the inside of the corner, suggesting there's enough room left to the car's limit - or I simply wasn't fast enough, always driving carefully and reasonably of course.

The first thing I noticed sitting behind the steering wheel was the comparatively tiny inside mirror, a fact becoming consequential after turning around: The rear window just wasn't any bigger!
The dashboard is pretty much the same as in the VW Eos, which is not bad, but not really exciting either. I encountered the problem that, when shifting gears quickly and steering at the same time, the shifting hand may strike against the climate control knob and adjust it unintentionally. This happened several times. But I must say, I adore the inner door handles a lot. Btw., the seats are comfy, afford a lot of hold, and - nobody may have expected this - there is enough room for another 1,90-metre-bloke like me in the back! For the trunk: Uhm, yes, you get a travelling bag in, maybe even two of them.

Well, for the drivetrain - or all the things that make the car go at last: When driving across the german country road in a sportive kind of way I noticed driving constantly in second and third gear. Here the difference to my daily diesel-ride becomes obvious: The Scirocco needs to be revved; the maximum torque seems to be pending between 4,500 and 6,000 revs. I know there are a lot of cars revving even higher, but, compared to my 1,9 litre TDI, this already is a higher sphere for me. And - another comparison - the turbo lag is way less existant than in my diesel; the engine provides enough power in every situation.
For the next test I had to take it to the autobahn (being quite empty fortunately): top speed! I drove some kilometres in one direction, turned-over and drove the opposite direction again to max out the car at 200, 220 km/h respectively, so I claim the real peak speed lies somewhere in-between, let me guess ... 210 km/h? At this level of speed you really start to notice the tiny size of the engine I initially thought. In sixth gear it literally took ages to gain speed above 140 km/h - this is where my diesel gets the point. But then, after shifting back to fifth, I was quite astonished reaching top speed again in a much shorter time, leading me to the conclusion that sixth gear is designed as a kind of cruising gear. I really didn't expect that of a hot hatch like this!

Well, for the mileage ... I have to be honest: I didn't really give attention to it; if I remember correctly, the consumption was somewhere around 10 litres per 100 km, all kinds of driving involved (quick country road driving, city driving and a fast autobahn ride). I'm sure the value can be lowered a lot because you just not *have* to drive across country roads in second gear and floor the pedal on the autobahn.

Okay, what's missing? Oh yes, the sound. Imagine a four cylinder, 1.4 litre engine. With a turbo. That's it. You can't really expect more.

In conclusion I can say it's a really fun car to drive, and it even can be used to carry four persons in a convenient way (you need another Scirocco for the baggage though). I really love its style, and if I would buy one, it would be viper green. It's a shame that most Sciroccos on the road are black, grey or white - this car definitely needs a flashy colour!

As a young man loving to drive, with a lovely fiancée loving to drive as well I'd love to buy this car, and I'd even let myself be seduced by the 200 bhp version - not without another test drive, of course. But as a down-to-earth German with appreciation for practicability and efficiency - that's me as well - I think I'll stay with my spicy red A4 Avant - S-Line chassis, of course.

Well, they can't, since they are actually the same. You must be in a higher state of consciousness if you are able to spot a difference between them (see comparison attached) ...

I'm not desperate for being credited here, but an objective discussion would have been way more appropriate than what this thread had become during the last posts.

Collection of car related websites

S3 licensed
This is gonna be a thread filled with links of all imaginable car related websites featuring photo galleries, news and data sheets of cars of all ages as well as of concept cars.

Let me start with some I use regularly:

www.netcarshow.com --> official high-resolution photos and press information of cars mostly from the late 1990's on; highly recommended and very reliable

www.worldcarfans.com --> official and rendered images, spy photos and car related news; can be a little bit biased sometimes but provides early insights

www.dieselstation.com --> high-res wallpapers in most screen resolutions of cars, bikes and concepts, information and data from official sources

www.carbodydesign.com --> highly interesting and useful website for (ongoing) car designers that offers design news and a lot of tutorials

Sites I have bookmarked but don't visit regularly:

www.automobilemag.com --> news and pictures

www.seriouswheels.com --> news, pictures, wallpapers

My question now is: Does anybody know a kind of data sheet website where cars and specifications can be compared easily, like in one of the famous card games we all played in our childhood?

Let's complete the list!

Terra Nova - Strike Force Centauri. Loved the atmosphere, the incredibly big maps on several planets with totally different surfaces (you could fly over them with your jumpsuit), the way squad communication was implemented, the music (though it only was MIDI the tunes were great and addicting), the weather effects and day/night missions, the spy drones you could send out and - last but not least - that the amount of trees you destroyed during a session was presented to you when quitting the game.

I'm desperate for a sequel, but it won't happen.

Quote from ToxicKlay :Did you NEED to ZIP the layout?

I personally think it's a hassle to unzip everything when all you had to do was add .02 KB and leave it unzipped.

I'm downloading it anyway,

Yes I had, because there are four files in each zip and you can only upload a maximum of four files per post without using an imagehost.
Driver Security Training

Hello drivers,

after participating in a driver security training recently (in real life of course :razz I decided to replicate some of the most interesting tests for LFS like the slalom, the famous moose test and emergency braking manoeuvres on surfaces with different grip called µ-Split.

The target for each of the lessons is to not hit any of the cones. It therefore is advised to approximate the limit with slower speeds, raising pace after every pass, beginning with about 80 kph. That's just how it was executed at the training centre here in Germany.

1. Slalom
Try to follow the slalom as fast as possible and finish between the last two cones (forwards! ).

2. Moose Test*
Drive quickly towards the obstacle (don't brake, just coast) and try to avoid it in a "scared" way, ripping the steering wheel quickly so the car *may* pull. This is indeed a volitional effect you should learn to fight by catching the car and coming to a secure stop on the lane you started, ideally between the last two cones next to the second obstacle that simulates opposing traffic.

3. µ-Split 1
Braking on surfaces with a different adhesion coefficient, in this case grass on the left, tarmac on the right. Begin braking on a level with the initial cones and try to bring the car to a secure stop within the shortest distance, balancing the car to not spin into an obstacle. Try with ABS on/off.

4. µ-Split 2
Similar to µ-Split 1, except an obstacle is added in the middle of the road. Do the same kind of emergency braking as in 3. and drive round the obstacle on tarmac or on grass in an alternating way. Again, try with ABS on/off.

*based on this layout file

This training session may be extended, if you have any ideas or remarks, please let me know. I've uploaded the layout files and some replays to watch.

And now, go test your cars and your "real" driving skills!

My most memorable OMG moment was one day when I rode to my work experience by bike:

I was riding on the pavement because the road beneath was congested, when I realized some trash cans in front of me, naturally in the middle of my way. I had to choose left (traffic side) or right (house wall) of which I chose left, estimating it the wider gap. Well, it wasn't. My handlebar got stuck at a trash can which caused me to tumble directly towards traffic, one of these milk lorries rolling next to me. I was exactly level with the rear axles of the trailer and the only thing I could try to make it not worse was to hold up against the trailer directly above the wheels. Nevertheless I fell, and as the lorry drove on (I beg the driver didn't notice anything), I found myself (including my bike) laying on the road, directly in front of the following car that could be barely stopped.

It took some minutes, a completely ruined pair of trousers and some slight abrasions for me to realize that if I had tumbled one or two metres ahead I could have probably been rolled over by a lorry with cow juice. That was scary and would have surely changed my attitude towards milk.
