omfg!!!
i think most of you have the right idea, but are over thinking it.
preload is simply a way of giving the car more effective suspension travel.
thats it.

if you have a 6 inch long 100 lb/in spring, and a 500 lb weight, the spring can only compress one more inch.
now that isnt very useful if you need to absorb shocks is it?
(actually it is already binding if the spring is only 6 inches long, lets say it has 6 inches of effective travel)

what preload says is that if you have a 9 inch spring with a 100 lb/in rate, and a 500 lb weight, and you preload it 4 inches, it will only compress one inch when you add the 500 lb weight, that way you have 4 inches of travel left for absorbing shocks in the road.

yes folks its really that simple.

preload is useful if you are limited by your lower (front) arms on your suspension.
the longer your arms, the longer your suspension travel.
in my camaro, the stock front spring rate is 750 lb/in.
sounds incredibly high.
well it needs to be, with no preload, and only 3 inches of travel, gm had no choice.
a common mod is to install a preloadable suspension and use either the same or softer springs for a better ride.

the real world application of preload in race cars is getting the cross weights accurate and even.
since the driver only sits on one side of the car (except in single seaters) most race cars have adjustable preload (using a device called a weight jack)
this lets the team adjust the suspension so that each front wheel is holding the same ammount of weight. same for the back wheels.

i know about the f9, but i want it to keep the value, for like around a skid pad.
that way i dont have to watch it.

how do you get and use the insim version?
all i have is the normal version without revs editablilty
small insim request

i was wondering how to program an insim that would tell various things like 0-60 times, 0-100 times ect, max g's and things like that.

my opinion on the matter is that something similar to an lx8 would be awesome.
currently my favorite car to mod with slickmod and lfstune is the lx4.
i usually always end up giving it a small v8 with about 320-370 hp and slicks.
its a blast to drive.

i think that if the devs were to release another lx car it should be in line with the UFR.
big power, light weight, slicks (wide slicks at that) and no downforce.
the reason i say no downforce is that i think it would make the car more easy to drive and the whole point IMO would be to have something that was incredibly fast and very rewarding once you got the hang of it.
not something that you could hop in and master in a few hours...
my two cents

i love everything but the random chicane in the long straight area.
i will be taking that out if you dont mind.

i dont know if we are still talking about low lock setups, but i have a pretty good one for the LX6 that i can share.
the tire pressures are currently set to heat up quickly in a normal race.
its basically a qualifying set.
with higher pressures, it is super fun tho.

i guess we never asked if he had photoshop or gimp or something like that.
if he is using paint, then it wont work at all.

thank you very much

if that was stealing, i am sorry but i really liked the skin.
i see my skins every once in a while and take it as a compliment.

hey, i found a skin modeled after BARRICADE from transformers, but it is for the XRT.

could someone who is good at skinning make it for the XRR?
there are some minor changes that need to be made, such as moving the "to punish and destroy" logo, and removing the blank windshield thing.

if anyone can do this for me, i would really appreciate it.
i tried to do it myself but got way too frustrated...
im an OOBER noob at skinning.

(yes, i know thats not how you spell Uber)

edit:
just realized that the skin might be useful...

it is if you get LYTE.
its a layout program and you can set jpegs as the background.

i understand what torque is irl, but in the game it doesnt seem to be related to actual measurements of any kind...
however, i just downloaded the newest version today and i am having problems.
using the xfg, lfstune keeps shutting down when i enter values anywhere except engine size.
i will have to go back to the other version i guess.

either way, this is a great program ciph

oh, btw, i was messing around in rim editor, and noticed that i cant save or load presets.
also, is there an "option" for changing the "track" of the car by changing the offset of the rims?
Zebediah_S2

maybe this is obvious, but i was wondering what the torque value actually did.
power is obviously an overall modifier of some kind, but torque seems to work differently.
is powerband the same as before on lfstweak?
in tweak, i usually use .5 but in tune, some cars have much lower numbers

not trying to get into the discussion on diffs... i think my head would explode.
:ouch:

however, i would like to comment on the idea of realistic setups.

i think its a great idea to have realistic setups built into lfs.
but instead of having the devs limit the options, i would like to see done somewhat like this:
instead of having [hard track] and [rallycross] be the default sets and non-changable, we should have them implement a few realistic setups as the default and un changable setups.
this would mean, for the non-gtr and formula cars, there would be setups imitating a completely stock street driven car
then there would be the upgraded, "level one track-day" car, with stiffer shocks, shorter springs and sticky-er tires.
then there would be the
"level two track-day" car with thicker arb's, racing spec springs and dampers, better brakes, ect...
level three would be completely adjustable, as it is now, and we wouldnt have to be limited in any way.

for the gtr and formula cars, (including the RAC imo) the setups default setups would acurately reflect the rules regarding suspension setups.

this is just my opinion.

i really enjoy maxing out a cars suspension for the specific track, but i would also like to see realistic options in place

Quote from squidhead :a) Drag is 90% setup work + 5% reaction time + 5% a brick on the gas pedal
b) The setup field clearly states it's a 10.17 setup

actually, i find that if i test my setups in patch W, with auto tranny on, i can really hone in on a perfect setup.
the reason for W, btw, is that there is no reaction time.

another helpful tool for drag racing setups is to make a 60' split, and 1/8 mile split time.
90% of the time, unless you are dragging with 1000 hp cars, your 60' is a good indicator of improvement.

well the first part is setting up your keyboard steer correctly.
i tried to use the mouse and was very frustrated.

under controls you can alter your steer and return rate.

here are my settings.
steer rate: 0.47
return rate: 0.38

fast steer mutiplier: 3.00
slow steer multiplier: 0.25

button control rate: 10.0 (if you are using patch x, then use 6, just make it as high as possible.)

i also advise using the "no help" option, because it will let you feel the car better

for controls, left steer is left arrow, right steer is right arrow, slow steer is down and fast is up.

i usually drove around with down always pushed and pressed up when i wanted to make fast corrections.
in otherwords, my middle finger was always on the down arrow and my other fingers were on steer control.

throttle: a
brake: s
shift up: x
shift down: z

of course its a lot more fun when you have a real controller or wheel.
i went and got a ps2 style usb controller about a year ago and have used it since.

hope this helps

ive made skins at 1024 and 2048.
for most dumb skins tho, 1024 is plenty
if it has lots of detail then 2048 is better.
but for just online racing, i stick with 512.
i value FPS much more than being able to see a pixel on my car

i really like that skin jayhawk...
i'd remember it

as for me, i stick to making skins of real cars.
camaro iroc,
mustang foxbody,
mercedes cl something or other
audi TT

i find that its pretty easy, but people tend to remember them

this really annoys me...

do it yourself.
play around with the fastest setup you can find and figure out how to improve it.
i guarantee that mr x didnt have someone make him a set, and that it took him a while to get it where it is.

im guessing that the reason you want a fast set is to beat him...
well its not gonna be that easy.

NOOB drifting help
Zebediah_S2

i have recently (as in starting on tuesday) begun to take an interest in drifting in LFS.

i am having some luck with getting good setups in the XRG mostly by using the race_s as a baseline and playing with the anti-roll bars and rear toe out but i am having a few problems.

it seems i am getting too much understeer on corner entry while my tires are somewhat fresh.
should i tighten up the differential preload or lower the locking?

or should i lower the front ARB rate?

i am also having problems with gear ratios.
for the short tracks i am using, i tend to stay in first gear, especially with the low power of the XRG.
however, i seem to run out of revs too easily on the straighter sections, but shifting lowers the revs too much and upsets the car.

what is a typical approach to this problem.
i could make first gear numerically higher and make second gear very close to first, but i seem to fall under the powerband in the slow turns...

i guess i should use the XRT, but i dont like the non-linear power of the turbo...

what LFS really needs is to replace the engine in the XRT with a 3-4.5 litre V6, I6 or V8 now that it is no longer a demo car.

any input is welcome, as long as you arent flaming me for drifting and being a ricer...
fyi, my XRG is skinned to look like a third gen camaro IROC-Z...
doesnt get much more UN-rice than that lol

Quote from Jakg :no, its not your right to use it at all, people are annoyed because its thier hard work being stolen by you, and also because if you use a team skin, people assums you are part of the team, and if you are a a-hole, then people assume the team is, THATS why, and let me repeat this. You have NO right to use others skins!

so even if the skins has "PRIVATE - For xxx team members ONLY", you would still use and consider yourself in the right? and think of it this way, if you made a picture, video, book etc, and someone took it and copied it and then used it, without saying who made it, would you be annoyed? thought so, cause thats the exact same thing your doing

well i guess nobody ever told you that if you dont want the whole world to know/be able to see something, dont put it online.

i understand your argument, but it is stupid by the very fact that a) its a freakin SKIN... not a big govt secret or anything and b) it was put into his skin folder because someone who had the skin used it on a PUBLIC HOST most likely. if your skins are really that precious to you, dont use them on a host that just anyone can log onto.

i have made a few good skins and have seen someone using one of them... i was annoyed at first, but realized that it was actually a compliment to the fact that i made a damn good skin.

get a life.
seriously.

as for the layout, its pretty good, and i enjoyed using it.

sorry you got into all this.

honestly, i want the option for digital speedo back.
it may not be completely accurate, but who cares.
on a 15" screen, the numbers are too small to read easily on an analog speedo.

i'm not blind or old either.

honestly, i just have to jump into this...

IMO, we should have an option to continue auto throttle cut and blip.
you see, i dont have hundreds of dollars to spend on a racing wheel with pedals (and a clutch).
i am making due with a logitec dualshock controller and was doing just fine until Y.
now, with auto clutch turned off, changing gears is a half second ballet of button pushing... obviously, this eats at my lap times and is very frustrating.

i tried turning autoclutch on, but i have to wait even longer for the clutch to "engage" otherwise, when i give it gas, it "slips into gear" and overly heats up the clutch.

i find myself avoiding the more powerful cars for this reason.
the FOX is only barely drivable, the new FBM is drivable, but the BF1 and
FO8 are hopeless.

i have to change all my setups to make first gear extremely low in order to get moving.

i agree that simulation is a good thing, but we have to remember that the point of a game is to have fun and do things that cannot be done in real life.
for those that want clutch wear on, go for it, but for the rest of us, there should be a patch or something that either a) makes the clutch more durable, or b) gives back auto throttle cut

this is just my opinion
