also, if you don't want it to be smart object, when dragging from TC or other apps, make sure you don't drop it INSIDE the photoshop document, but instead drop it onto the bar on top of Photoshop application (where you have File, Edit, Image etc. buttons) - this way the file will open as another document inside PS.
