Has it really been 15 years? Tilt

On the weekend I reinstalled LFS to mess around with the OutSim interface.
Turns out you *can* drive LFS with a simple gamepad and join an online server for an hour or two. Fun times.

You guys are entirely too nice. I'll feel obliged to invest in a S4 or S5 license soon if you keep this up.

You know how some places have a system here you can buy food items in advance so that people in need may utilize the benefit? An officially recognized system where license-vouchers are given away as prices for good racing to demo users may encourage people to stick to the official demo servers rather than looking for alternatives.

This one is all about avoiding ramming other cars when in the pit lane or on the lap of honour.

- pit stops

Would you be inclined to create an interface that allows external programs to control AI vehicles? Or expose the interface you are currently using?

These days there are some interesting new AI concepts and the processing power of many users has picked up sufficiently to support them. Surely this has a fairly low priority, but if one day you decide to touch the AI anyway this may be fairly easy to implement.

[Edit]
Still loving those updates. Keep them coming. Smile

You basically just derailed your own thread. Smile

In all seriousness - I love hearing about progress. Much appreciated. Keep up the good work.

Quote from three_jump :I'm "fine" (for lack of a better word) with all kinds of snooping/services as long as I have the ability to turn it ALL off or uninstall (i.e. xbox app). And that for the moment seems only be possible for the enterprise version.

I guess then it's somewhat like those 'free' smartphone apps that generate revenue by sending personal data (of economic interest) to third parties?

I was always sort of "fine" with those since the tradeoff seemed to be public knowledge. You get the app, you lose privacy. Buy the paid version if you don't want to make that deal. But I'm unsure whether I agree with this model on operating systems. I concede that your average free android app basically has the same privileges as the system itself, so my reservation may be entirely subjective.

Quote from Anthoop :That does look pretty good Vain...will try it next time I turn the PS3 on...thanks. Smile

Use this recruitment link to set up an account so you get some free stuff - maybe while the download is running. Also I'll see your character so I can set you up with some spare coin and maybe help you in-game a bit.
(And by a bit, I mean a lot - the start can be tough.)

Still playing Dust 514. Video

Lots of fun these days. Still a free shooter, still on the PS3.

(Anyone who's interested in trying: Send me a message.)

The discussion above was two years ago. Smile

The game is still kinda awesome though, for those that are interested in trying a Free 2 play SciFi shooter on the PS3.

I would like to bring this game back up.

If you left the game earlier because of the very harsh spike in difficulty you may find it vastly improved now. New players now have a much easier time than they used to.

If anyone decides to enter (recruitment link above Wink ) send me your character's name and I'll give you a few hints.

Quote from Scawen :Yes, we are still working on the Westhill updates.

I know it can be very annoying to do, but thank you very much for keeping us up to date on what might seem trivial. It means a lot to everyone who is counting the unknown number of days until they can take a look themselves.

Good initiative, but I guess most people prefer driving on a schedule these days.

Back in ~2004 people who signed up were mostly students I suppose. So these days they'll likely have many more obligations than they used to. Personally I've arranged for tuesdays and thursdays to be LFS-days (even though that is going to fall flat tomorrow ). I guess that's just one of the realities an aging userbase brings with it.

Quote from danowat :Hmmmm..........haven't played LFS in what?.....5 years?, I don't have a gaming PC anymore, I wonder if my desktop at home can run it.........

I see some of the "big names" are still around

How about a Road Sport Nostalgia Cup?

Nice to see you around still.

@Micha:
Of course I do. Go back online and you can continue right where you left.

Just to follow up on this:
I'm still happy with LFS after over three weeks. I barely have enough time to play twice a week, but that's well enough to participate in a series like Torsdagsrace.

No doubts at all, everyone needs to get back online.

Quote from Kristi :So that means I could just take a trip there, be 2,5 seconds faster and get my free tickets? That sounds great, althought I guess you can't modify the setups

The trick is to modify the setup after you're done. Just add some weight or something. :tempted:

Returning to LFS

Hello everyone.

With the recent announcements about the Westhill update my interest in LFS has picked up again. Last week, after 6 years of not playing LFS, I finally got my old G25 from the basement and plugged it in. If any of you readers are thinking about doing the same, here's my verdict:

It's awesome.

Somehow over the years I completely forgot that LFS is still 99% distilled fun. I got back into it within hours and am enjoying myself a lot. I signed up for the Torsdagsrace and had loads of fun at the event.

So again, if any of your are thinking about going back online, do it. It's the same fun it ever was.
Share your story if you decide(d) to come back, too.

Holy zombie posting batman! :eye-poppi

There's an update to R4 in the original post. But don't get too excited, I merely recompiled the pitboard for InSim v5, which appears to have been in use since sometime in 2011? I'll just stop complaining about Scawen's development pace right now.

Anyways, special thanks to yanki for reminding me to update this little program. I also wish everyone lots of fun to whoever attempts to try it out. Give me feedback if you have any complaints. This was a real quick attempt to revive 7 year old sourcecode. There will likely be problems. Many of them.

Quote from Scawen :The obvious separation for LFS would be physics on one thread, graphics on another. The operating system can then run one thread on one core and the other thread on another core. It's quite a rewrite but as so many computers are dual core, this one seems like it would be quite a good idea. It's quite a change though, the physics system needs to provide a "snapshot" of the position and orientation of every object, so that the graphics renderer can render a picture of this snapshot while the physics system is generating the next frame.

There are tons of libraries that facilitate multi-threading and they aren't even difficult to use. However my stance is that one should only approach multi-threading when there are clear performance goals. E.g. if you can actually figure out the CPU loads on the target system and break that CPU load down to specific bits of the program so you know precisely where your bottlenecks are on a function-per-function level. When you can then quantify the benefit from multi-threading your code you can start thinking about what sort of effort you are willing to commit to the issue. (Then double that required effort because something you didn't expect will break terribly midway through the rewrite.)

I guess what I'm trying to say is "thread carefully" (pun intended ).

Quote from pik_d :What better time to incorporate multi-score than when re-writing a huge part of the physics engine? Hell, even putting the tire physics on its own core from everything else would be logical when he's starting over on it from scratch.

Feature creep is exactly what LFS needs right now.

The discussion has some merit though when we're not talking about redoing the whole architecture of the game but rather putting some minor tasks in a separate thread to alleviate the burden on the main thread.
In my own projects the AI is a good example of this. It can be fairly encapsulated and doesn't require perfect timing. Just don't overestimate your own ability to identify swapped mutex lock statements...

Quote from brandons48 :[...]I'm also a lot more into this game than I was with Dark Souls 1 - Which I didn't like very much.

Is Dark Souls 2 more linear than Dark Souls 1? I really liked Demon's Souls, but was completely lost on Dark Souls 1 because I always seemed to walk the wrong way. I remember being fresh from the asylum and walking into an area designed for lvl 40-50 characters because I didn't see where else to go. It took me an hour of fighting each monster for ~3-5 minutes until I realized I was supposed to walk somewhere else where I could one-shot enemies.

This is a surprise to me too, but between the a whole season of STCC and the 24h MoE race with 3id the title of most memorable experience in LFS has got to go to the Road Sport Summer Cup. Seriously, 3 seasons of awesomeness.
