Can we get some technical data on the LFS-ABS?
E.g. can someone make a braking test on flat asphalt and read out the braking force? That way we can analyse how the LFS-ABS works and compare it to real life systems.
I've personally worked a bit with the internals of a very recent ABS system and I'd like to see how well LFS implements it.

Quote from tinvek :they are about to be the first car manufacturer to who's yearly profits will be higher than their turnover thanks to their shares in vw increasing in value by 6 billion euro !!!!!

Porsche is only in a good financial position because they don't make silly investments like a racing venue. Did you know that they spent exactly 0 € on their motorsport department in the last few years?

It's simple - if the venue isn't profitable theres no reason to have it. Throwing F1 out of the calendar will leave both Hockenheim and Nürburgring much better looking financially.
At least I'm not asking F1 to stay. There are much better things to spend 5 mil. € on than a F1 race.

Quote from Becky Rose :For a company arguing against DRM they're sure giving the conglomerates all the justification they need to carry on implementing it, frustratingly.

Actually, on their website the developers stated that with one of their previous games, which shipped with DRM, the estimated pirate-ratio was equal/slightly higher (92%).
Of course that's just two examples and not a well based study. However, I'm fairly sure for mini-/midi-game developers DRM mostly increases costs and reduces customer-affiliation.

Quote from hrtburnout :Also, they win at Le Mans because they have all the money in the world to test.

I think that's the spirit of factory racing. Look at the racing series in the world, find the one with the most room for improvement within the regulations, build a car that is utterly superior and defeats all other vehicles to the point that opposition is pointless and withdraw from the series when those whiney b*tches rule out your car because it's too far advanced. The strategy is called "unfair play".
Happened that way for Porsche (917), Mercedes (CLK GTR) and it's the situation Audi is in. Once the FIA recognizes that they've been out-smarted by Audi and cripple the diesels enough Audi will withdraw. Just like BMW should've withdrawn from WTCC after the laughable rule-changes to make the BMW catchable by the FWD competitors.

I don't really care about the looks and I've seen more ugly cars in my life (I've been to a french car dealer once, then I went to see tubgirl to see somethig comparatively nice).
What I wonder though is how they manage to get the aero balance right. The rear wing looks like it will require a pretty high angle of attack to provide the amount of downforce the cars need to be balanced. I guess it'll just be more difficult to set up a car in a neutral or understeery way at high speeds for those drivers who prefer it that way.

I saw Hancock about a month ago and I have to admit that I actually can't remember what the plot is about, except the general setting which can also be taken from the trailer.
I did not fall asleep or do anything else while watching the movie.
It's just that enthralling, I guess.

I have to ask you to put me on the reserve list aswell. I have recently moved to italy and it's likely going to take a while before I have enough of my things here to start sim-racing. I wouldn't like to take the opportunity of a full season away from somebody else due to my own failure to have everything ready on time, so I'll only join in if there is a vacant grid-slot later in the season.

While it is Lerts it doesn't mean everything he says is nonesense.
Quite simply it's normal that on certain surfaces the brain can't work out what the actual geometry is like. That is because the brain uses two 2D-images to construct an impression of 3d-space. Of course that is not going to work well in some lighting-situations, especially when a difficult textures of a surface somes into play.
It starts with the obvious graphical illusions like this where your brain gets confused trying to identify "up" depending on where at the picture you look, continues with this showing that obviously the brain is making a couple of wrong assumptions about objects we see regarding their state of movement and also has its effect on everyday life. It's all down to the fact that you can't see 3d-space. Your brain just guesses very smartly what the space around you propably looks like. But sometimes it falls flat on it's brainstem when things get more difficult.

P.S.: That's my contribution to a Lerts-thread. ...Once in a lifetime...

Quote from ACCAkut :I voted for night, but only because I think its a lot easier to programm/animate than really realistic rain weather

Since we don't have a realtistic turbo model, a realistic tyre model, a realistic damage model or a realistic aerodynamics model either I guess Scawen could get away with a not-completely realistic implementation of rain.

Basically I'm saying that LFS is a game and no, it won't need 6 months of research to gather data on wet weather physics. I have at least 2 papers at home that have typical force-long./-lat. slipping curves for different types of tyres in them, and that is even before I start looking for papers on the topic in a library.

My personal impression is that a senseful implementation of wet weather physics would be about as much work as a proper damage model that includes external and internal parts. But since we're waiting for an update of the damage system since 2005 I guess a useful estimation for the release-date of wet weather physics would be 2011.

By the way, I find this a better display of wet weather physics, simply because it sticks with one car for the whole time.

Quote from hyntty :n-m=q
n=q+m |*(n-m)
n(n-m) = (q+m)(n-m)
n^2-nm = nq-qm+nm-m^2 |+ (-nq)
n^2-nm-nq = nq-qm+nm-m^2-nq
n^2-nm-nq = nm-m^2-qm |the same term (n-m-q)
n(n-m-q) = m(n-m-q) | : (n-m-q)
n=m

Non sequitur-error in the last line.

(n-m-q) equals zero (in the example 3 - 2 - (3-2) = 3 - 2 - 1 = 0) and thus n * 0 of course equals m * 0. That however doesn't mean n equals m.

Quote from samjh :It's on Youtube too. Perhaps it's a Red Bull marketing thing, as it shows an RBR car and a STR car going wheel-to-wheel (with the STR car spinning out!).

It's propably supposed to show Webber failing to notice that he's being lapped by Vettel.

I'd quite like the proposed track, under some requirements:
1. The new (actually, old) sections of road should be noticably more narrow. Two BF1s +1 meter would be a good measure.
2. No positive camber in corners.
3. Steep rises and falls.
4. A second car beside the FZ5 that'll be hard to drive around the track.

By the way, even though I dislike ovals I'd like to see a narrow, small, unbanked oval. It'd be a nice challange of throttle-control.

Tho it would be kind of screwed up it would be cool to have all tracks in tarmac and gravvel version

Aston GP in gravel? Most boring rally stage ever .

Seriously though, laying down patches of gravel on the tracks (with a brush-like tool) as a autoX-layout is a great idea.

Do you absolutely require the Vista licence?
I don't think there's any important software right now that requires Vista and I don't think there will ever be.
Using your old Windows Xp (propably) licence on the new computer will free up some funds that can be invested into a good and lasting GFX card.
And not switching to Vista will free up system recources to improve performance.

If you can imagin yourself going to your first race, being accidentally punted off the track in lap 3 and converting your former vehicle to metal shreds within 10 seconds, then crawling out of the debris and saying "That was worth the 7000£!" you're good to go.

What I'm trying to say is: Just make very sure your expectations are realistic. Your car will fail, you will have to make repairs from car-to-car contact, you will not make it to every race and your funds will not be enough by any means.
If you're still enthusiastic, and I'd be if I were in your position, you're good to go.
I think you'd regret it if you don't do it.

...Though perhaps I'd go for rallying, but that's personal preference.

Quote from Lible :If opera would make an user interface like this minimalistic user interface possible, I would be very happy.

Why?

On topic: I like Google Chrome. It's a slick and fast browser and I'm sure it will be a very worthy competitor to other products on the market after the necessary plugins are coming. Also, seeing as it's open source, I assume that it's habit to send data to google.com can be controlled as soon as a couple of more free thinking developers got their hands on the sourcecode.

Quote from Jertje :These days when it happens - maybe once every 2 months or so, I just take on the challenge of trying to break free of it, which sometimes works quite well.

It may perhaps not be so funny experiencing it in person, but I just had to think of the "Wiggle the toe"-scene in Kill Bill vol. 2 .

Unfortunately I can't contribute to the topic. When I have a bad dream they usually are in violation of several laws of physics which makes me realize they can't be real, so I just turn the dream around and think of something nice.

Well, the FZ50 is an aerodynamically very slick car, so it'd be very much stuited as an airborne object.
However, I think that the aim of tarmac racing is to achieve the quickest laptimes while staying in close proximity of the tarmac. The Red Bull Air Race is being held with other vehicles, I believe.

Jokes aside - if you can make sure that no cars in the field are going to get airborne, not even lap 1 when the field is very compressed, and that the obstacles are not removed by the first 3 cars in the train (or put onto the racing line) layouts should be considered as a valid option to add variety.
On the other hand I don't think such a layout exists.

I'm not looking at the top of the field this time. I didn't touch LFS since march this year and I won't do any proper practice until october.
(Small story: I only started looking at the LFS forum again last week, especially looking for fun and uncomplicated leagues to get back into LFS - and sure enough you announced RSWC2 in exactly that week... ...Is RSC my destiny? Are you the messiah of virtual racing bringing back the lost sheep? We'll find out this november... )
