IMHO it should generally stay closed. But, take the DP1 just as an example - if there are some people on here who could make it, they could contact and work fairly closely with Scavier, and when they're all happy, release it. That way you would have very slow releases of cars/tracks, not much (if any) quicker than we have now, but hopefully very high quality, and keeping the 'feel' of the sim. If people can make stuff that's good enough, then they can.
If anyone approves something, it should be Scawen, Victor or Eric - or one or two other highly trusted people. They know what everything should be like, and that would keep it as an extremely high quality sim. It could be difficult with other people because one person's great is another person's crap.
If it's opened up completely, there will be no control over anything any more - yes, you will probably have some great mods, but the rest will turn into rFactor. Like the games themselves, they can look beautiful, but that doesn't mean they're any good.
If this is going to be a racing simulator it needs to follow what happens in the real world, to a certain extent of course. IMHO this goes with a pit lane speed limit and false starts.
That program is old, but it works. It was made by this company, and it's not even there any more! That error's not anything to to with it, sorry I just tried it on XP and it restarted with no problems at all. You might get a few others from the program, but it works
I had a thought last night. I don't think anyone's suggested it. The map is often covered up by chat text, so how about having a key that would raise the map to the top (ie. above chat messages) when it is held down? Exactly like ctrl + shift does for the frame rate/time and LFSW names. Then seeing it, say, when exiting the pits will be no problem at all, however much chat text there is.
I tried it with plain old Wine in Kubuntu Dapper a while ago, and I didn't notice any problems at all. I was surprised at how well it worked. I didn't try using my wheel though, but I suppose it wouldn't have had any force feedback if I had done.
+1 for that. Of course each vote already comes up (x voted to RESTART), so I imagine that it wouldn't be too hard. It's a small thing that could be really quite handy
Heh, guess what CD I've just found. It's a proper legal copy, I got it with some kind of 'subscribe and get this for £5' promotion a few years ago. But posting a link would break the forum rules...
I suppose you will dual boot it, then at least you can go back to XP if you have any problems. I tried a Vista RC a while ago, and it was interesting to try it.
It looks lovely, as does the box art, but it doesn't mean it's any good. Don't we know that from somewhere?
I found the Redline server back in mid July. Before that I'd never really been online much. Between then and now I have raced on there a hell of a lot, for me at least. The team members are good racers, and racing there is always fun. Following the leaders helps improve my PBs too!
Yes, newbies can cause problems. But if you have a brain and are a good racer, and have just joined at the back of the grid, you know you might have to avoid them. It's simple - do that, get to the finish, and for the next race you'll start in front of them.
I was quite surprised when I saw the posts here because I have never been banned or had any problems. Funny that.
I think it would be worth it. You need to spend time in the first place getting used to the sim anyway, so I can't see how it would be too hard. Surely the tests would only need to be simple anyway - not-particularly-fast-but-okay reference lap times for each car and basic racing etiquette.
Maybe there could also be another, more difficult set of tests requiring, say, faster lap times and more distance covered online. That would allow more elite races... almost like league racing, but still on public servers
I like the idea of having some kind of online experience system. Say, once you have driven x miles in the FO8 you can move up to the BF1 - online - but you can drive any car you want offline or on servers that allow it.
If I've just unlocked LFS, why should I have to work my way up? Who cares if I want to mess around offline with the BF1?
I would hate to see the cars completely locked away again. When I came from GPL, F1C, RBR etc. to S1 all I did was race the AI around Fern Bay RallyX Green in the RB4 to get the credits. If I knew that system was in GTL I would never have bought it - luckily there is a file for unlocking all of the cars.
I get satisfaction from winning races ( ), not earning electronic money!
