Quote from Vain :I'm actually considering buying the game solely based on the fact that it has no copy protection.

Vain

And therefore has a piracy rate of about 90 %...

Quote from ___ :I agree but if you look at Furiously-Fast's pic. Its not as bad as the rest. At least the picture itself if it didnt have the bg would look a bit nice.

A driver in a Formula car without a helmet on... Great motif... :banghead:

Does anybody have word about box content (was always quite rich with the previous titles) or maybe a limited edition for the PC? Spent half an hour searching, but no luck so far...

Quote from Syfoon :200k visitors to a games convention in Germany, or an almost limitless number of people all over the world who'd be able to drive it in their own homes... which would be a better target market?

They'd have to promote LfS, another commercial product not under their control, with little gain (remember how you had to explain to your family and friends how a game can be a serious training tool?)... Instead, there's the option to just put adverts on the telly and in mags, without having to link to LfS and explain what it is...

Quote from Syfoon :Then there's the idea of using LFS in VW dealerships to give people a little test drive before they actually drive it... (or to entertain people, GT4 in dealerships is so passé!)

I don't know about the UK, but I never have seen a console or anything of sort in any dealership... 1. Buying the infrastructure for it is costly, 2. the reasons above...

Return on invest is the key... On an expo dedicated to games it makes sense to package one's product in a game, even if it has nothing to do with it... For the rest of the world, you'll rely to traditional, proven means that your target audience knows and understands...

Of course, we all can only speculate what the reasons are that we "should just forget it in the meantime", but this is one thing everyone seems to be overlooking, hence me pointing it out...

Quote from Anathema :I guess they drop it on Christmas.

I drove the scirocco in Leipzig and the car seemed nearly finished to me. But I dont know how much perfection the devs will put in it.

Don't you forget something? Like, some quite big company holding the licence to any recreation of that car?

Quote from Syfoon :Surely VW would want it in LFS as soon as possible, I mean, at the end of the day, it's a source of promotion for their new car...

They got their promotion: they ran a contest at a three-day expo with over 200.000 visitors... Isn't that enough?

You guys get you hopes way to high... It comes when it comes and until that, take Scawen's advice and forget about it... Enjoy what you have (LfS or otherwise)...

Using a negative e-brake value gave you some kind of "nawz"....
:chairs:

That, and also I've never seen a handbrake use anything else than the rear brakes... So if you set the maximum braking force for the rear brakes, how could it possibly be something else than that? Another brake (where?)? Magic?

Quote from bcblues :Thanks, I will check it out. Do I need a separate, dedicated server?

Just open a Server from your client... I believe you can run the server hidden, so it won't be advertised with the Master Server List, so nobody will join your server unless you give him the name... Your PB's will then be automatically recorded which you can view here...

Quote from Glenn67 :For me I hang out for physics changes more than content even, the physics is the reason I'm here. So to see advancements and feel those advancements is what keeps me wanting more I'd be like a pig in mud if there was a new physics change every other week

Agree, and I believe implementing new content to the physics (engine temperature is just one example) would improve the "replay value" for both new- and oldtimers more than new tracks/cars...

Quote from gezmoor :Well that's one way it could have happened. The other being the complete opposite of course. ie The devs realised they needed a "current" car in the game to attract new users and so they went to VW to beg them to allow them to use the car. A bit of a pitch later about how it would bring them kudos etc and a bit of payment from LFS to VW and the devs get the go ahead.

I think the second scenario is far more likely, with maybe the bit about money being paid not happening if the devs managed a really good sales pitch for LFS.

The reason I believe it was that way round?

a) I think it's highly unlikely that any top exec in VW would have ever heard of LFS, (it's a million to 1 shot that someone that high up in a global company is going to be spending their time on line playing a driving sim).

b) Even in the highly unlikely event that anyone in VW had even heard of LFS there isn't a chance in hell they would be interested in going out of their way to approach them to put their car in the game. What do they gain? there simply is absolutely zero marketing to be gained from it.

c) In the extremely unlikely event that someone in VW had thought it was a good idea to have one of their cars in LFS, hell would have to freeze over before they would pay the devs for such a "privilege". Much more likely in that exceptionally unlikely scenario is that the devs jumped at the chance and were falling over themselves to do it for free.

Remember, it would take a relatively senior person in VW to make a decision to allow a car of theirs to be licenced to end up in a game. We're talking a global corp here, not some niche car manufacturer looking for any avenue they can to promote their "garden shed" product. Global corps are extremely sensitive to product placement and positioning. A mistake in this respect can cost millions.

The devs have never approached a car maker to include (one of) their cars in LfS... Among others, Intel - also a global corporation - saw the potential of running their competition with LfS... VW needed someone to include their new car into a game/sim to run a competition to win/promote their new car on a three-day event and on relatively short notice, is it so hard to believe they went out to approach developers to do that? Why were still not driving that thing in LfS might be your product placement sensitive global corp at work...

Quote from dougie-lampkin :The fact that it's a pre-beta (thanks bbman, thought it was beta)? If it was in perfect condition they'd release it, to try and get over the Vista fiasco as soon as possible. If it was perfectly bug free it wouldn't still be pre-beta...

I don't have Windows 7 yet (no point really, Vista suits me fine), but a google images search on "Windows 7" leads to some very Vista-esque screenshots

It's pre-beta, but every blogger and reporter who got his hands on it (supposedly quite some MS-cynics in that group) said that it ran absolutely fine... Apparently, the developers made a 180° turn in the way they program the OS and every feature in the pre-beta is complete and stable...

Quote from dougie-lampkin :It's widely available on various torrent and warez sites. No point getting it other than for shits nd giggles yet though, it's only a Beta. It still has some bugs that could cause damage if you use it as a main OS. Plus you wouldn't be able to report them, as you're not an actual Beta tester...

It's a pre-beta, actually... Beta won't be starting anytime soon according to MS...

They were giving 7 away at the PDC (preinstalled on a laptop) and at WinHEC (on a disc)... Of course it had to be on the net sooner or later...

Quote from S14 DRIFT :So, does anyone have any features of W7, like what it brings over XP/Vista? I quite like XP because it's functional without being "omg vista skinzzzzzzz", and doesn't slow down my PC, and all the driver support is there.

Tbh, what W7 needs to be is a very big SP for XP.

Consensus is that Windows 7 is everything that Vista was supposed to be with a cherry on top... Just read the blog, it'll answer many questions you might have...

Quote from boosterfire :I knew that I had read somewhere that there was a new Windows coming. So I searched for it a bit this morning, and it seems it'll be called Windows 7.

This is what they had to say about the naming:

Whereas Vista should have been 6? Well, it seems not. In the original plan of Microsoft, there was no Vista, it went directly from XP to 7 (codenamed Blackcomb, from Whistler-Blackcomb ski station in British Columbia - it seems Microsoft developers have a lot of spare time, incidentally XP was codenamed Whistler). However, at some point they decided to develop an interim to 7, Vista, which eventually became a full windows in itself. This is what I didn't know, that Vista was basically a Windows 5.5 at some point, from which they decided to make a full release (which doesn't sound like a good idea).

We all know what happened, Vista got out, and it has a very hard time dethroning its predecesor, XP. Which is where Windows 7 comes in for a mid-2009 release. They have also indicated that 7 will be an improved version of Vista. The question one might ask is, why the eff bother releasing Vista, this flawed and hated thing, in the first place?

Anyway, they say everything we hate about Vista will be fixed in 7. The annoying digital rights management, the annoying incompatibility problems and hopefully the most annoying injustified hardware requirements.

I just can't wait for 7.

Hear (and see from the conference videos) from the devs themselves: http://blogs.msdn.com/e7/default.aspx

It could be a marketing ploy, but from the thought put into 7 it seems to me that they really focused on how we as users experience Windows, which is a good thing... I have to say I'm fairly excited about the new OS, which for me is a first...

About Ground Effects: GP2 works with it since the beginning and they do just fine, as do Prototypes around the world... So it's far away from "being dodgy"...

Quote from Gnomie :Low pressures --> large parts of the tyres will flex (including sidewalls) --> the flex is spread over a larger portion of the tyre --> tyre has enough freedom to deform and deflect --> less friction on the tyre tread --> lower temperatures on the contact surface

High pressures --> less flex on the sidewalls --> tyre is too stiff to move about --> more friction on the tyre tread --> more local heating on the contact surface.

My take on what could cause higher tread temperatures with higher pressures...
