Just had my first go. I spawned by the lighthouse and began working my way through the little villages following the railway tracks. I found some gloves, a wrench and an empty backpack on a farm, saw one zombie who gave chase, but which I managed to lose round some buildings.
I eventually starved to death an hour and a half later just before I reached a largeish town, as the only food I'd been able to find was a single rotten apple.
Awesome fun however, more awaits tomorrow!

I seem to remember something a while ago about tethered R/C cars - where they drive round a circular track attached to a wire in the centre. They get some crazy speeds, past 300mph (IIRC)
