not much of a kitcar really though is it. i dont think it will be anywhere near as much of a hit as the original.

lol the brake pedal in real cars doesnt have any force feedback through it anyways except for if your unlucky enough to have ABS and that is like a vibration.

a gas cylinder with some fluid in it would give you the best feel for real brakes i would have thought. anything else is just unrealistic.

of the languages ive used so far id recommend Java, the syntax is pretty much identicle to C but doing higher level things with it are made MUCH easier.

i agree with the dummies book, i started with the C++ book and it couldnt have made it any easier. literally a dummy could have used it :P

Quote from Amso :And all the problems you've stated dont have to do with why It's bad. A ghost car is functional no matter what anyone thinks because it helps people, good or bad, so you cant put it down.

thats exactly the point. LFS is about racing and driver skill, its not about using as many aids as you can to boost your times. real drivers dont have 'ghost' cars so in what aspect is it valid for a simulation?

im all for ghost cars and racing lines in the training section but anywhere else is a big no no. you have to understand what LFS is about before you realise why things like this are bad for it.

ok, i think ive got about as many replys as im going to get.

could only those who are interested in contributing their efforts PM me your names and what aspect youd like to help. theres going to be many things that need doing here and even somebody who knows more than i do about the league races would be useful.

id like to conduct the working aspects of this away from the public forum, by MSN or email would be preferable.

theres no way this could get off the ground without your help so thanks again ,

Quote from Amso :No. We meant a Ghost car is a kind of save of a race you do.

Let's say you've just done a hotlap race. When you begin the next lap a ghost car, that was the previous lap you did, will appear. Then you can sort of try to race it and beat it, once you're ahead you know you've beaten your previous time.

Dont be so persimistic and put ideas down straight away.

yes i am fully aware of what a ghost car is. and everything that ive said before still applies. whats stopping you from just following the ghost car precisly and then making only slight corner or speed adjustments to get a better lap time? nothing is.

why would you need it to see that yovue beaten your time when you can simply look at the clock at the end of the race like real race drivers do?

a ghost car is a visual cue which aids drivers in getting a better and false laptime which they could not do without it.

Quote from Mackie The Staggie :I would be more than happy to write up reports from saved replays....also I could help with interviews if/when needed.

May as well, I'm to slow to race them

excellent. thank you

im going to let this thread run for a little while longer before i start writing names down for 'the team'

nope. i believe there is enough coverage of patches already. i dont want any of the machine-type restraints to come in the way of this. its purely for the racing
Would anybody be interested in making an LFS newsletter?

I think a regular newsletter sent out every month to subscribers in pdf format detailing that months LFS racing events would be a great addition to the community.

At the moment we don't have anything like this, the LFS news site just doesn't have the same appeal lets be honest. the most recent 'top news' article is over 2 months old and it doesn't flow/read like a newspaper does.

i propose something new. heres what i think it should have;
  • coverage of the main league races for the current month. like they would do over the radio with a football match. it would be a great way to summarize a 40 odd lap replay (which people may not be able to find or have the patients/time to watch) into a single section where people could get a feel for the action and hear about any exceptional displays of driver skill which tend to go unnoticed.
  • interviews with the winners of league events like they would do with F1 and WRC drivers and the likes - im sure the drivers would be more than willing to participate in the follow up from their victories.
  • updates on team politics, driver changes, strategies for upcoming events that sort of thing. this would be at the teams discretion ofcourse and im sure people would be interested in hearing about what they have to say.
and what i think it should not have;
  • pictures of new skins.
  • lists of modifications to LFS.
  • details of current and future patches......
......you get the idea. this is a current and regular pure LFS racing and LFS racing related newsletter - i.e. not a flashy website you have to keep checking for updates!

i think something like this would stimulate interest in league events, make winning and competing more prestigious and make people more aware of whats going on in the LFS racing scene.

id like to see members of the community volunteer their time and expertise in certain areas to contribute to this. perhaps some budding sports journalists or interviewers would enjoy contributing their effort and talents?

this is just a working idea and something i wouldn't mind being a part of. if anybody has any constructive criticism(s) or would like to be involved id appreciate the replys.

thanks,

ghost cars and magic racelines dont appear in real life. so why should they appear in a racing SIMULATION? fair enough having them in training mode but anywhere else just goes against what LFS stands for. i think Scawan made a mistake with the racing line and id like to see it removed.

im not liking the way this is actually going. its turning into a database of information about LFS rather than an actual newsletter. a website just doesnt have the same appeal.

i think the whole idea of it should be about bringing all whats going on in the LFS world to a single point where everybody can read it. just like a proper news paper. that doesnt mean a few guys have to go slaving away researching and writing articles. for that members of the community should volunteer a bit of their time to contribute. im sure some of the winners of the top event series would be more than happy to give a little interview of what happened during the race. or maybe one of the server admins to give an overview of a certain race. you get the idea.

this is something id really really really like to see for LFS as it can be a very hard thing to follow evertything thats going on. this newsletter would save members the ball ache of doing this themselves.

theres real potential here as ive said a few times in this thread and i dont want to see it go to waste. if at the very worst i would consider diong it myself in my free time at uni gladely.

Quote from g7usl :I feel that people like Jim Clark, James Hunt and Dan Gurney to name just a few, would not agree with anything that you have said.

They always managed to get around without crashing or taking people out because it requires a higher level of concentration than racing on the billiard table types of circuits that you mention?

Ask yourself how many people have raced in the Isle of Man for both the TT and Manx GP races and lived to tell the tale.

Like every circuit, you go as fast as the track will allow you to, to exceed that margin is careless and just plain stupid.

exactly correct and you only support my argument. how many online racers have the skill level of Jim Clark and co? pretty much none. most people cant even make it through T1 let alone T50 on a tight cirtcuit where nobody can overtake but just follow the tail, blocking others off. its a recipe for disaster. and what about lag? if one person lags everybody behind them is finished.

im not arguing that it cannot be raced on. clearly it is raced on! what were saying is that it wont make for good/fair sim racing.

once at the starting grid the guy behind had a false start and rammed into the back of me. for this i got a stop and go penalty which i thought was very unfair. would there be anyway to correct this?

Quote from g7usl :Excuses, excuses

You don't have to use it if you don't want to

i didnt say i dont want it. just that it "may" not be as good of a racing track as we would have thought. especially as there are few if any overtaking points. i can see very easily it turning into carnage as one driver spins off and bounces from barrier to barrier taking out others in the process. theres no run offs or gravel traps to stop the car doing this like there is at Aston etc.

on the plus side i can see it giving a good sense of speed and making for some pretty challenging and demanding hotlaps. also learning the circuit would be good for when people do actually make their pilgrimage to Germany i think it will also attract more people to the game.

all in all people have to be prepared that its more of a novelty track than anything else.

good. i hate the current cars, the skins make it look like they are all race cars.

edit: can you do this with all of the cars please so that only the GTR's have race skins. thanks,

Quote from Stefani24 :The Nordschleife's pretty, yes, but I think, it wouldnt fit in LFS. I think it wouldnt provide an LFSihs feeling driving there.

i actually thought of that. perhaps the track is too thin and doesnt leave as much room to lay down traditional track driving techniques as weve come to like with tracks like Aston.

+1. i really do hope this happens. most people obviously want it to. i wouldnt care if hacks got out and rubbish tracks got made because LFS fans would only want to play the official ones anyway!

yup. if the clutch is not depressed then the starter motor has to turn the input shaft.

Quote from obsolum :How would having a ghost car option make people drive "unrealistically"? What do you mean with "driving unrealistically"? And how would it be bad for LFS.

what i mean is that theres nothing stopping you from just following the ghost car and doing exactly what it does apart from maybe taking a slightly better line into a certain corner to improve your time - which is unrealistic.

i remember in GT4 when i wanted to beat a lap time i used this very technique. ghost cars can very easily be used to improve your time which is unrealistic because you dont have that luxury in real life. in real life you have to remember and pick that set of lines and braking points off by heart, not visually cued.

its bad for LFS for the reason mentioned above.
Dac

fantastic to make it easier to drive unrealistically? ye i guess so. however its clearly bad for LFS and i hope it never gets implemented.
Id like a G-meter please

as title. not for drifting id like an analogue circle in the middle of the screen so i know where the weight of the car is more. i think it would help alot to make my driving more smooth and controlled when finding the limit.

nasty. although just like F1 cars they are designed to disintergrate into as many pieces as possible whilst keeping the cockpit in tact. which is pretty much exactly what happened.
