I had a very unexpected phone call earlier today.

My car went away 2 or 3 weeks ago to get repaired, and i was told that it would be a good while as they were going to do bits to it as and when they got the chance, between booked in jobs and things, so i get a call asking if i want the whole set of 4 springs replacing or just the broken rears, soi said all 4 if you dont mind, whilst thinking oh right, he's gonna sort the suspension out first, but no, its been quiet there, so its done, and he was going to be fitting the springs today and taking it off for MOT tomorrow, yes!!!!

What a relief, and there was me thinking that it was gonna be much more serious to fix, the clutch plate was mashed, all the springs had flown out, plus it was down to the rivets, the cover had had all the fingers blown off it and the thrust bearing was pretty mullered too, but other than some very minor dents inside the bellhousing caused by various clutchy bits flying about in there when it broke, the gearbox is fine, nice!

The trike isnt very well

There was a big car show meet up type thing in newmarket last night, plus a film crew and people with big cameras from something called ArtWarEntertainment LTD taking photos and stuff there as well, plus a proper little set area made on one of the other levels with screens and lighting to do some proper photography, so i got hold of ian and he bought the 750 i posted earlier in the thread, while his mate brought the gxsf600 one that he built last year.

Rode about a bit, a few people took pics, came over and had a chat to him about them and stuff, then his mate left, and soon after that the people running the shoot started getting the cars they wanted for their shots taken upstairs to be properly photographed, so he did a few ups and downs on it, some small drifts, one big rolling burnout etc, then a few minuted later they come got him and says we want the trike in the shoot, bring it up whenever your ready, but the sickening part being that the big rolling burnout that he did had completely toasted the clutch, it wouldnt even pull away it was that fried, so no piccys and a recovery truck to come fetch it, but at least they are interested in it.

My mate has recently built a Suzuki GSX-R 750 SRAD, but its a trike, and not your usual solid rear axled (and hugely unstable) thing, this has a proper independent rear suspension system which he has worked on through trial and error for years and years and is his own design, which allows you to lean it into corners and the rear wheels stay planted to the road, this thing can drift sideways round sweeping bends at silly speeds, something that would be impossible and frankly a suicidal thing to attempt on a rigid trike, it really is something quite special.

This song does strange things to me, what its about puts me in a certian mindset thinking about someone and im usually in tears before the final chorus, lame as f**k but true, powerful song, for me anyways.

I have just been building up a PC from older spares for a mate of mine, she had a shite slow p3 celeron 1.x ghz thing, so i made up a p4 2.53 for her, which is much better, still not modern, but at least it doesnt freeze and die all the time, but the only RAM i had to hand was 1x256 and 1x512 stick, totalling 768, which i fitted and it worked ok, but then i remembered that the old one also had 768mb fitted, and this p4 i built has 3 mem slots, i removed it from the old machine and fitted it into the newly built one, so it now has 2x512 sticks and 1x256 stick, totalling 1280mb, and i arranged it like so, starting nearest the CPU, 512-512-256 which im sure is correct, biggest chip nearest the processor, smaller one in the end slot, but windows is only seeing 768mb still if i look in control panel > system, yet it does seem quicker, plus if i run PC wizard it shows that all 3 banks are filled, and what size sticks they are, but the 2nd one, one of the 512's although it shows module size etc, shows serial number and make as unspecified, so pc wizard can see it, but cant identify it.

So my main question is, eventhough windows doesnt appear to show it, pcw does, so is it actually in use, because as i say, it feels better than it did, but im not sure if its actually making any difference in there.

My old nova used to do about 35 in 1st, just over 65 in 2nd, about 95 in 3rd and went off the clock in 4th, although that may have been because i replaced the blown up 1200 lump with a suitably tweaked 1400 engine, with a decent rejetted twin choke weber, and left it on the std 1.2 4 speed box, god that thing used to rip

Tried lots of things, didnt make any difference, then i spat my dummy out and broke the door off the DVD drive, i know, temper temper.

However, this then required me to change the drive, so i pulled the LG GSA-6143B drive out of an old machine that i bought for spare parts, fitted it and i can now play all the disks i want to, lovely, the only downside being that my black and silver pc now has a cream DVD drive, oh well, nevermind.

thanks for the tip beano, although this may not be an option for me as i have one of those compact little sff computers, and it has 1 sata socket for the hdd and 1 ide socket for the dvd drive and no others, theres not enough room in the case for any other devices, the pc i have is a hp compaq dc7100 sff, very basic indeed.

cheers for the replies guys, although i doubt that its a hardware related issue as this machine would play the very same dvd when i had xp but refuses to detect this or any other dvd r disk, i seem to remember having the same trouble with a dvd rw when i attempted to restore all my backed up music onto it after i replaced the hdd and installed w7, although i suspected that was caused by something to do with the way older os's use the udf format as it was a data disk and thats why it showed up as a blank on my machine, i ended up using mum and dads vista powered thing and had to copy the lot onto a series of cds to get my tracks back, but im now thinking that the 2 faults are related, ill try that patch you mentioned franky.

and as for the + or - thing, i have no idea what this means, plus the disk im trying to play has artwork on it so doesnt say, all i can tell you is that the playing surface is a bluey purple colour.

DVD R discs and windows 7....

First of all, i have tried googling this issue, but all i get is results for w7 not detecting DVD drives, and not actual kinds of disk, which is the issue i am having, which is when attempting to use a DVD R disk it will not play the things, the drive spins up and messes about for a few minutes, and just shows me an empty disk if i open it up in my computer, and i obviously cant play them as according to this pc, theres nothing to play.

The drive, a pioneer DVR-116D of the IDE variety, is capable of both reading and writing of DVD disks, TBH not much of their techy stuff makes a lot of sense to me, so here is a list of things it can and cannot play DVR-116D Specs.

I know that the drive can handle these disks for sure anyway, because i am trying to watch the same disk that i watched on this same machine with the same dvd drive as i did when i had XP, and it worked perfectly, so i feel that this may be related to windows 7.

Does anyone know of any specific issues?

Many thanks in advance.

I think you are right maggot, i misread initially and then stuck with it, i see now, its a suggestion of transmission speed vs GPS speed, i see, finally.

Quote from FPVaaron :How exactly did you check this theory of yours?

No need to, because its a fact, and common sense.

Things that rotate, such as wheels, have speeds measured in RPM, so if a car were to rely on wheel speeds alone then all cars would have 2 rev counters in essence, one for engine RPM and one to show the RPM of the wheels, this is NOT how vehicles speeds are measured, this is a FACT.

What happens is that the wheel and tyre size on the vehicle are taken into account and the speedo ratios are calibrated as necessary in order to display the speed of the vehicle in MPH or KM/H, so although wheel speeds are involved, the measurement is not taken directly from the wheel speed itself, it goes through the drivetrain and is picked up from there.

Quote from nikopdr :pretty much all of them do? it's either that or the transmission thingy jack mentioned... or something like that

how else would you explain why my speedo shows 10km/h more than the actual speed i'm driving...

Really, last time i checked, speedometers show the speed in mph or km/h that the vehicle is travelling at, not the speed at which the wheels are revolving, i understand that wheel speeds are the initial moving part, and that the speed in either mph or km/h is calculated through speedo drives and gearing etc to give you that reading from the wheels, but dials dont display the RPM of your actual wheels directly.

Edit: the 10km/h more is a safeguard AFAIK, a speedo can over read but is not allowed to under read by law, so most manufacturers will gear their speedo ratios so that they under read slightly.
