Quote from boosterfire :Wait, the ballad of gay-tony thing is a joke right, it's not real? Good video, but I was still pondering that preview I was shown there.

Profile thing does seem like a good idea to me, at long as it's reliable.

The GTA thread is thataway

Quote from niall09 :Points for the 2 courses im interested in are around 330 Should be piss easy, but I'd be disappointed if I got anything less that 450, my aim is about 480/490

I'd be aiming about the same, I was also thinking of Architecture, but that's like 580 points or something...If I get it, great, but I probably won't

Quote from niall09 :Same, but I start tomorrow...even after 14 weeks holidays I dont want to go back

I presume you'll be headin off to UL, if you get the points? Also, what course are you gonna do? Most of my friends are headin off to uni this week, but I decided to do TY like a big homo

I think I might put Digital Media Design as first choice, then maybe Computer Systems as second choice.

Haha my thoughts exactly, TY was such a waste of time considering I could've been out of this hell hole by now, and enjoying uni life

UL hopefully yea, either Software Engineering or Computer Engineering, not entirely sure what the difference even is Points should be OK, they're looking for around 430 which I can easily get if I actually do a bit of work this year

We've done so for the last 5-ish years I think it's still imperial up north though. I much prefer metric, it makes you think you're going faster or something

Given that I have a car and a bike roughly as old as myself that have probably had the nuts driven off them at some stage (I know the bike has anyway ), and both have never needed any sort of gearbox work other than new clutches, I'd say it has minimal effect. I do tend to rev match when downshifting, but not double clutch...

Actually, I've taken to clutchless shifting recently. I've found at about 5k in every gear bar first, I can shift up clutchless with zero resistance, which I've been told means everything is syncro'd at that speed. I haven't noticed any strange noises or feel when driving, and I've also been told it lessens the wear on the syncros, as long as you have the revs matched. How accurate that is, I don't know

Quote from LiveForBoobs :I drove xfg at bl1 with mouse for several years. Always doing laptimes close to WR. Heck, i had the WR for a while. Then i got the DFP but could never do as well on it. On slower cars like xfg, and xrg i handle it much faster with mouse.

I agree, I was a good 10% faster when I used keyboard/mouse, but now that I have a G25, I have 100% more fun, which is what the game is all about

I've grown up a bit now, and tend to short shift rather than redline every gear. It's far easier to stay on the bike cruising in 6th rather than flat out in 3rd when going through forestry I find .

I tend to save my excessive speed for my car now Was doing 160kmh before the shot, but by the time the camera turned on the wind had me down to 150kmh...Not bad for an ickle 1.0L I must make a video of the redline, it sounds so cute

(Say what you like about my speed, I don't care. This was done on an old bypassed B-road, with an 80kmh limit, where 120kmh is the standard speed of anyone driving on it. There's no houses, I was on my own in the car and it's wide open, so if it went tits up I was the only one who'd get hurt :shrug

Look at the orange box, available for PC, PS3 and 360. I've played it all on PC, but only a few levels in Portal on the 360 (turns out Portal on a controller is not so good), yet it's still pretty much a game far more complex than LFS ported to consoles. It's not like it's impossible for this to happen with LFS. All it takes is someone who knows what they're doing (not me then) to decompile LFS, and port it for PS3 use.

Hardware certainly isn't a limitation if a game like HL2 (which looks amazing in both console and PC form) can run on consoles. I used to play LFS on an old Dell with 256MB RAM, a 9800 PRO (yes, the old AGP ATi, a far cry from the PS3's RSX) and a 2.2Ghz P4, comfortably at 60FPS with full AA/AF at 720p resolutions, before I built my new PC. That rig comfortably ran LFS, and the PS3 demolishes that in terms of hardware. Don't say hardware is a limitation, it's just down to the people who know how to ge the power out of the PS3

Quote from george_tsiros :i made an error

fancy that

Hey, that's why erasers have pencils on the bottom

Quote from george_tsiros :
hyntty, the way bike gearboxes are made, there is a neutral between any two gears in sequence. the one between 1st and 2nd is the one you are supposed to use, ok.

for example, the early hornet, the cb600 has a rather easy false neutral between 5th and 6th

makes you shit your pants when you hear that GRRAAAANNG going 120mph

Yes, it's not so brilliant to hit a false neutral when kicking up from the redline (seeing as these things have no rev limiters, they literally keep going until they seize or until the carb can't suck any more air in) in 6th aiming for 7th, and hearing the 2-stroke NING NING NING NING at about 20k, makes you fly over the handlebars usually, not so brilliant at all Happens a bit too often on a gearbox older than myself

Quote from Wikipedia :The PlayStation 3 uses the Sony, Toshiba, IBM-designed Cell microprocessor as its CPU, which is made up of one 3.2 GHz PowerPC-based "Power Processing Element" (PPE) and eight Synergistic Processing Elements (SPEs).[110] The eighth SPE is disabled to improve chip yields.[111][112] Only six of the seven SPEs are accessible to developers as the seventh SPE is reserved by the console's operating system.[112]

You know the cell chip houses 8 processors plus a seperate PPE, right? Its 3.2Ghz PPE just manages the whole cell. Fair enough, one core is reserved for the OS, and another is disabled by the factory. That still leaves 6 processors to do whatever you like with, and as far as I know all threading is done automagically by the PPE in its "managing". Basically meaning a single-threaded game like LFS could theoretically run across all 6 cores without even needing to be rewritten for a multi-core CPU, if I understand it right (Scawen said before that rewriting LFS to run across multiple cores could take as long as a year). I'm not sure at all on this, but LFS may have to be rewritten for PPC though. I've never worked with PPC, so I'm not sure

Seeing as you're neither a PS3 developer or an LFS developer, could you please explain where you have the inside knowledge that "a PS3 isn't powerful enough to run LFS", given that LFS runs happily on PCs with a quarter of the processing power the PS3 has? The "only" thing that may let the PS3 down is its GPU, it's still based on a 7800GTX. This GPU is still more than sufficient for LFS though, and even for outputting full PS3 games in 1080p glory. Just look at Killzone 2 or Uncharted

Sorry if it looks like I'm having a go at you, I'm really not. Just hate people putting down the PS3 for no particularly founded reason, especially when they have no experience of developing on the hardware

Quote from george_tsiros :also to get to neutral, you need to shift down from 1st

No, you need to shift up when you're stopped. Shifting down in first does nothing in the MRT Actually, there's a neutral between every gear, really. I can kick into a false neutral between every gear on my bike, but the one between first and second is the easiest to find

Quote from Dajmin :There's apparently a few worth picking up if you can get them on the cheap.

Demon's Souls is the one everyone is talking about, a 3rd person RPG. With multiplayer.
Afrika is a wildlife photographer sim. Set in Africa. Where the lions and tigers are.
And Aquanaut's Holiday is the same sort of thing, but underwater. Like the surprisingly popular Wii game Endless Ocean.

Ooh, heard good things about Afrika, I'm on the prowl for a cheap-ish copy (I'll get my coat...)

I fscking hate games that include underwater sections (traumatic experience underwater growing up, I've been told...) though, so I'll be giving Aquanut a miss See my Tomb Raider thread for an example, the level designers thought it would be smart to base the entire first level in the middle of the ocean...Took me 3 hours to dive off the freakin boat
