Quote from Squeezer :1) I'm not going to run an old version of the game when I have paid for it even if it did work
2) No Conflicts - Every other game I own works fine, Every other App sound wise works fine. Its JUST LFS that refuses to work.
3) Tried that - no difference

Ive even got the latest Realtek drivers direct from their website as opposed to the official Motherboard provided latest ones.

well, if you try an older version, and the sound works in that version, then it could indicate that the current version has a bug that is causing some people to not have audio.

really, what do you have to loose? download the older version, and extract the files to a different folder from your main installation folder and start it up. you don't even need to unlock it. the only time it takes is downloading.

Quote from VinE :EDIT3: Hmmm.. I've got music in the menus, but not a peep in in-game sound...

you need to adjust your sound lag, in the options -> misc screen

try increasing the sound delay (options -> misc).

on my computer, when running windows vista, any setting under .25 produces no audio at all, and .26-.28 produces audio with popping noises and .29+ produces clear audio.

could be the same issue.

you could also try <Shift+W> to reinitialize the audio.

my thoughts on it...

over it is a well put together mag and has some good articles and some good writers.

that said, there are two areas that i feel need addressing.

1) this was, IMO, a fairly large issue...the spanish and german articles. not that they were in spanish or german, but that they were just thrown in there without anysort of indication that a language switch was being made. just bam! different language. maybe that's what that round graphic was supposed to signify, but it wasn't obvious. should be a header of some sort ideally. also, it should be identified in the TOC/Index, so that the readers taht it appeals towards know exactly where to find it.

2) this is more of an aesthetic gripe, but the "cover" needs work. it just doesn't make sense. its the wheel of a car, upside down, with light shining through it...ok?

it could be part of a really great scene showing a spectacular wreck and or amazing graphics/rendering, but the reader will never know. it needs to be placed so that more of the scene is viewable.

the cover layout is also very blocky. magazine covers are rarely blocky, instead opting for overlaying elements, with these elements calling attention to content inside. i've attached a very quick and dirty mockup to illustrate my point.

ok, that's it. i'm done

great work, and look forward to seeing future issues.

Quote from thisnameistaken :I actually really like the look of that. Imagine if the apex was about the height of the bridge, so for half the chicane you're going up, and the other half - right after the apex - you're coming down. If it was faster than the first chicane it would be a really difficult complex in the road cars, and possibly in the downforce cars too due to the crest. It'd rule!

there would be people spinning on the track there like nascar drivers on a road course

Quote from Rolle :thank you, but how can the best place to shift be at different revs?

gearing. the "spacing" inbetween gears isn't uniform, so the drop in rpms in the 1-2 shift will most likely not be the same drop in rpms as in the 4-5 shift. its all about ending up at a good point in the powerband after the shift.

and given that power starts to drop off after a certain rpm on most cars, combined with the gearing issue i explained above, you'll have to shift at a different point in each gear to "land" at the same rpm after the shift.

Quote from e2blade :AS I SAID!!

i had the same problem

the solotion is to go to options

misc

adjust sound lag to .25 or higher no lower -.-

the audio at .25 pops and crackles on my computer. I have to use .29 or .30, but anything .26 or above produces audio of some sort. but yup, your solution worked like a charm, the value just isn't universal across all computers

Quote from SpaceMarineITA :For sound problems, try to press shift+N when in car.

that doesn't fix the issue in vista. it appears to be some issue between lfs and direct x audio, and only adjusting the audio delay ingame and possibly reinitializing the audio <shift+w> will work. muting and unmuting <shift+n> doesn't work.

I'm glad I found this thread. I was also having problems with audio in LFS in Vista with Realtek audio on an Asus board. for me, anything above .27s sound lag works, but at first it didn't. what i had to do was <Shift+W> to reinitialize the sound engine then it worked. I stepped down a .01th at a time until sound cut out, which was at .27s. Hope this helps some of the other vista racers out there.

oh, i'm also using the 0.5U11 build. Not sure if that makes a difference or not.

what about this new gadget from matrox?
TripleHead2Go

since it is essentially treated as a single triple wide monitor by the computer, would this work?

the nice thing about this is, you can use it with any video card.

.:edit:.
http://www.matrox.com/graphics ... e/th2go/gaming/list.cfm#l
it has the LFS demo listed as a supported game

Quote from TheRealEddie :hmm, when I go to options - view while in cockpit view I don't see where I can adjust the X,Y,Z values of the cam position. I see something about mirror offset but that does not seem to do anything. I also see options for pitch angle (and some other angle) but nothing explicitly about the x,y,z position.

Any other advice? Sorry for the noob questions.

if you were doing this in the fox, it wouldn't do any thing. IIRC, the mirror offset is just for the rear view mirror (not the side mirrors), and since the fox/fo8 don't have rear view mirrors, not thing to adjust.

Is the card (or system) overclocked at all? texture problems and a other graphical glitches can occur on systems/cards that are overclocked too much.

and you mentioned that it was only 65 degrees. i'm assuming this is in reference to the video card. even though i can't find the operating temperature range for the 5600u, this temperature is most likely in the safe range, but it is higher than most of the reviews i found. those were in the low 50s.

What about your case temperature? even if 65 degrees is safe for the video card, it could be over heating the system.

and i definately have to agree that 250w is not adequate for systems these days. and while it may not be causing this issue, a underpowered psu will fail quicker, and it can also cause system components to fail prematurely.

sounds like you have a work flow problem. get a program like hoversnap! to take screens shots in 98 while viewing replays. it saves the screenshot as file in a folder you specifiy, (i use a folder on the desktop), and then just switch to w2k to work with the files, this keeps you from having to do multiple unlocks. that or install PS on your 98 partition too.

Quote from AndroidXP :Make sure to use "standard" IP ranges for your LAN, other connections are refused. More info here.

well, my network is setup on the 192.168.0.x range, which is a standard range. i didnt' get a chance last night to play around with my router settings, so that's a task for this weekend.

thanks for those helping me through this

Quote from the_angry_angel :Demilitarized Zone. Pointing this at your LAN IP is a pretty bad idea as all traffic which doesnt have a static route for is forwarded directly to your PC. It solves openning and forwarding port issues quickly, but leaves you with a big security hole.

glyphon, are you forwarding the ports to the correct LAN IP? Or are you possibly running LFS on an alternative port (this should be in the server settings)?

all the computers on my network are setup with a static ip, assigned by its mac address, and the ports are being forwarded to the correct lan ip, and lfs is running on the standard port. and last night, no one could connect to my server even when it was setup as the DMZ. but when all this is happening, i don't have any problems connecting to existing servers.

so, i guess i need to figure out if there is a setting that i missed that's causing my router to block packets, even for DMZ (which by definition it shouldn't). I guess one night i'll have to take down my network and hook my computer straight up the the modem and see if that works.

if yes, router config. if no, i guess my isp is blocking it.

i've tried so many different configs, i've forgotten what i've tried. oh well, more testing...

are you using any AA/AF?

i also have a 9600pro, but my processor is a 1600+ althon xp, and 1g ram, and i get 40-50 fps with 2xAA/4xAF at 1024. this is online and offline. only time it drops below that is autox tracks that have a huge amount of objects or races with more than ~10 cars (the 1g ram upgrade was only recently, and for a different game. before that i only had 256mb ram and had the same performance).

i'm using the official catalyst drivers. either v. 5.9 or 5.10. Regardless, its not your rig. this seems like a driver issue. that, or if you have antivirus/anti-spyware software running in the background, they could be causing the performance issues.

there's a computer in my parents basement that i installed xp on when i was in college (it was my storage "server" for my home network). Its a celeron 366mhz with 64mb ram and it runs xp just fine. takes a long time to startup, but after that, it runs just fine. i've advised my parents to hibernate it instead of shutting it down to cut down on boot times. makes a huge difference...less than 30 seconds compared to ~3 minutes.

Quote from Gentlefoot :Me and a mate our trying to set our machines up as servers but can't. When each of us tries to connect to the other we get a message "ClientConnect : Can't connect". Anyone know why? We're sure we've got the correct ports open i.e. UDP and TCP 63392. Any ideas?

i have the same problem. i'm trying to set up a server, and i can't get connected to it either. i've opened 63392 TCP/UDP and 29339 TCP/UDP on my router (windows firewall disabled), and still have the same problem. only way i've been able to successfully connect to my server is if i set that computer up as the DMZ, which i don't partically care for.

But since it is working when the computer is set as the DMZ that leads me to believe that the required ports haven't been opened. So does anyone have any suggestions as to which additional ports need to be opened?

Quote from Cue-Ball :While I think editable stages or a ton of different stages would be cool, I think you're off base to say that it wouldn't be viable without this. There are TONS of guys who drive "The Dragon" every single weekend for hours on end. It's one stretch of road, but it doesn't get old.

i wish that i lived close enough to the dragon (US-129) to be able to drive it everyweekend. well, i guess technically i could, but considering its a 3 hour drive each way, its not really practical. That said, the dragon is all sorts of fun. 11 miles long, 300+ turns, and some fun elevation changes.

a hill climb/touge track would be incredibly fun and a great addition to the game.

oh, and if anyone cares to learn about the dragon, here's a map...

just going off of a few examples, blender seems just as capable as the big/expensive software packages...it probably just takes a bit more work to achieve...
