I wouldn't mind something simple based on G-forces. As someone argued above, it could be quite informative to notice which corner people keep getting killed on.

But what I really want is to sit petulantly on the back of a moped while a marshall gives me a lift back to the pits and the crowd jeers at me. Oh yeah -- realism.

Sorry I missed it. Please let us know if you do something similar again, Rob.

Hi, Rob.

Sounds good. I take it slow but clean is OK?

Nice car. You probably wouldn't have a licence for very long, though.

And for the record, I drive one of these. Does the pointless spoiler on the back make me a ricer?

Quote from Batterypark :I know it was low, but I really think wearing an actual helmet while playing is the best way to achieve the in-helmet view

Agreed. I'm sure it would also be an excellent conversation starter at parties.

Quote from bbman :Nope, if you're running out of gas just in the last bend of the lap and pit, you can start the engine again when your fuel is refilled... What would you do if you wouldn't have an ignition button?

On the day that this scenario actually happens, what are the odds of me remembering that it's the "I" key I'm looking for?

MRodgers, AJP, you both make some excellent points and I agree with both of you.

In my opinion a lot of these blue flag disputes arise because the two people involved have a different conception of the responsibilities that fall to a driver who sees a blue flag.

I'd like to ask Jet_CZE what he would have done if the roles were reversed. Presumably he wouldn't have parked his car at the side of the chicane, but rather driven through that section of the track without delay and then allowed the other driver to pass at the next reasonable opportunity, i.e., on the following straight. (Perhaps by moving over or lifting, or perhaps no action at all would be needed.)

Certainly if you've joined a race halfway through, you have no reasonable prospect of a good result, and therefore if the leaders are coming up on you, I think it's only polite thing to take drastic steps such as pulling right off the track.

On the other hand, if I am about to get lapped by a faster driver in the normal way, I owe the guy all reasonable care to allow him to make a safe pass. But this doesn't extend to magically making my car disappear mid-chicane.

Quote from Hankstar :Nice! I'd like to see a whole field of NASCAR UF1s at the oval. Oval racing in the UF1 is highly underrated I think it's too easy and takes all the fun out if you race ovals in a massively powerful car

I like the cut of your jib, Hank.

Quote from Bob Smith :To get a base number for tyre pressures, just drive the car for a few laps and (so long as you're not spinning/drifting) make sure the tyres aren't overheating too much, or aren't underheated. If they are, increase/decrease as necessary

Cheers, Bob. Appreciate it.

Good advice here guys -- thank you.

I was curious to see that several people mentioned having a standard tyre pressure setting and trying not to mess with it except for detailed fine-tuning at the end of the setup process. This is something I certainly do with diff settings, but I think I end up farting around with tyre pressures too much and don't have a good intuition for where they should start. If any of you more experienced people could let me know the default front and rear pressures you'd normally start with on a road car and on a formula car it would be much appreciated.

Cheers,

Thanks, all, for the contributions. I am was definitely talking about the FOX, i.e., Formula XR. If you can do a lap of AS Club in the FXO (fwd sedan) in less than 1:03 then my hat goes off to you.

I'll try jacking up the nose on my comfortable set and see what happens. If this makes me, say, 0.5 secs faster per lap, then I will certainly use it in online races.

I used to play a lot of NR2003 and although hardly a setup expert, I knew enough to know that some of the camber and caster settings being used for fast times in that game were pretty unlikely. Didn't stop me using those setups when I could get them. I see the exploitation of the aero bug in LFS as a similar issue.

Of course I welcome the day that a patch fixes this bug and rewards more realistic setup policies. But while it's out there, I cannot see why I should handicap myself. Many of my opponents may be exploiting (or "exploiting", if you prefer) the bug without even knowing that they're doing so, because they're using a set they got from some fast person online.

(Having said all that, no doubt I will launch the nose of my car skywards and still clock 1:03.2s...)

Hmm. So is that why I can't seem to break 1:03 on AS club in the FOX? My nose is not pointing up in the air? (Of course, it may simply be that I am crap.)

I can see both sides of the argument. But this seems like a great compromise suggestion:

Quote from Kegetys :I'd rather like an option for servers to select what setup options they want to lock. So, for example you could force everyone to use road normal tyres and certain suspension settings but allow adjusting everything else. Or force everyone to drive the UF1000 with the roof on, or force everyone to use a certain fuel load...

I feel more confident using my own setups as they usually have a nice stable rear with a low power-on setting in the diff, etc, etc. But I have to say I'd enjoy racing on a server where Bob's road-car setups were compulsory. All that body roll -- it would be like watching Bullitt.

Hey, the BMW in your avatar looks exactly like the one I jammed into the back of somebody. Actually come to think of it I guess that car was a writeoff, so I suppose that's one for me. Damage wasn't bad, but it doesn't take much to write off a cheap used car in the UK.

Never written one off. More luck than good judgment though I am sure.

A couple of accidents, usually people driving into me. Often when I wasn't even in the car. One unfortunate incident in a BMW, in which a slightly shy driver in front of me didn't take his gap in the traffic at a motorway on-ramp...

The car that probably should have killed me was a 5.8 litre Ford Fairlane I used to drive when I was about 19. Luckily for me, I suspect, my brother wrecked it before I could. Oh, and I had a couple of exciting near-accidents in a Toyota station wagon: once the front left tyre delaminated at high speed, and another time it suffered total brake failure coming up to a big intersection. Great stuff!

These days I tootle around happily in my Honda Civic and save the idiocy for LFS (offline, of course!).

Quote from Chaos :A button in the conn list, maybe next to the SS button, that would mute the player (i will not recieve msgs from him)...

In leagues, this would help the players not to get lost in chatter, because you could mute all players except the admin...

Good idea, but maybe take inspiration from mixing desks and have both "mute" and "solo" buttons. A solo button means you only hear that person -- would make the status of listening only to the admin a lot quicker to set up.
