No need for changing the aero regulations (including and adjustable front wing) and introducing a "push to pass" button then, I guess. Oh, right, he didn't mention the cars.
(I wonder if all the teams are really as happy as Bernie says.)
Have a look at the 720p videos posted earlier. The quality is great even in full screen mode on a 1680*1050 Monitor.
Besides, the "Where the hell is Matt?" video is pretty touching if you've built close to the water... (probably another german saying lost in translation :tilt.
My crappy laptop at the office unfortunately turns those videos into a slide show -- Actually show is too big of a word, it's bassically just one still.
The stats page is a bit buggy for me as well. Seems like the division for season standings is somehow wrongly carried over to TTs. When looking at TT results or Season TT it still says "My division: 3" when in fact I am in div. 2 for TTs (that's skippy only).
Not sure, what you're doing with your internet connection, but I know that mine will always 'only' be an internet connection and not suddenly turn into something else.
Seriously, though, I think all your points are valid, but it's just a cost-benefit calculation. And neither cost nor benefit are fixed values, so to speak. If I would earn $100 per month I certainly wouldn't put 13% of that into a racing game, but luckily, I can afford it it and it doesn't hurt to shell out that money. And my benefit is huge in the sense that iRacing pushes all the right buttons for me. The system is just right for me. The feel is great, the structure suits me just right and therefore the $13/month are worth it for me.
And as far as this goes:
Yeah, I hope so. I really hope that iRacing will grow and one day become worth it for many, many more people. That is what the whole system relies on: The more people sign up, the better it will get. I just hope it works out.
Whether you'll like it or not really depends on what you're after. As far as physics (I call it feel) goes, it gives me way more than LFS and I don't think anyone who's ever tried it will rate it below LFS, most think it's better. Tracks are really awesome due to the high detail.
But the thing that puts most off are either the somewhat restricted schedule or the safety rating. Personally, I like both a ton. It's just the right mixture between pick up and league racing for me.
Unlike in pick up racing, every race really means something to me and is a small event. And unlike league racing, I can find several races each day and don't have to race on a certain day at a certain time.
iRating and SR I see as a challenge and an incentive to do the best I can each race and each official session.
I also like the fact that there's only one track for each series on the schedule each week. I practice for those few races I can squeeze into my schedule, do Time Trials, qualys and will always find a full race on the track I practiced for within that given week.
The fact that everybody else is working on the same track also means that people have the same focus, which is great for forum activity. You'll find threads on the forums each week of each season where people are discussing the combos that are currently on, and I can always pick up a lot from there.
SR imho does way more good than bad. Racing is still rough sometimes, especially in the Rookie series, but that's to be expected, as people are learning there. It gets better in D license series, although if you hit a streak of bad luck and get punted from behind in almost every single race on lap 1 it can get a little frustrating sometimes. But generally, reckless driving is really not the norm, but the exception. I don't think I got into a single wreck that wasn't a genuine mistake. Overall it really forces people to think more about their actions on track.
Personally, I think I have learned more about racing in those few months with iRacing than in my entire LFS career.
And btw, it's $20, not £20. Or is the pound that low already?
Edit: Should have refreshed, I guess. Would have saved me a lot of typing.
Admittedly, this is not the most original thread ever, but so what? Personally, I have been able to sneak in a true piece of art among all these self-drawn cats and nobody noticed.
That said, I could never see anything wrong with lerts' threads either. I'm really failing to see why people should get so worked up about his crazy ideas. I always found them amusing.
What a useless article and a useless statement by Hamilton Sr. It's like that in every high profile sport. "Fans" will always be like that and use the sport to act out patriotism or national chauvinism. It's not always pretty and some countries (or supporters of certain teams) are worse than others, but to start whining and talk about quitting when you earn millions, is laughable.
Now that you mention it: I feel the ability to put different amount of fuel in the car has really shown how great the physics of iRacing are. Before you'd just slowly burn off fuel and the car would subtly change. For someone who is as insensitive to these things as I am, it was hardly noticeable how the balance of the car changed (I did always have the remote notion that my skippy changed through the course of a race, but could never put my finger on it). Now, I can test it back to back, and, boy, does it make a difference. My skippy setup for Inf long goes from perfectly driveable with a full tank of gas to really loose, verging on scary (I'm exaggerating a bit here) with the minimum in it.
I'm currently contemplating whether I should go with an arb of 7 (good at the beginning of the race, but dangerous towards the end, when my concentration wears off) or 6, which gives too much body roll in the esses at the beginning of the race, but is more comfy near the end.
I think this is awesome and adds a whole bunch of depth to iRacing for me.
That's the point. Apparantly some people find other people's misfortune genuinely comical. The same people probably like watching those clip shows on TV, you know, "Germany's most stupid (whatever)". All you see is people tripping on bananas, being hit in the face by a rake etc. The Massa celebration/frustration clip falls exactly into that category. Personally, I could never laugh about it. Just not my kind of humour.
Anyway, most exciting race I can remember. However, the overtaking of Glock happened so fast and unexpectedly, that it didn't really register with me until it was all over. It somehow left me empty for that reason. Anybody else feel that way? (And no, this is not because I didn't want Lewis to win. I didn't care either way.)
Massa should be on pretty light fuel, though. But generally, I agree. Norbert Haug has said, that Massa is not Lewis's rival in this race. I'm sure they've taken Lewis aside and hammered it into him to not do anything stupid and just finish (at least 5th, of course).
I'm really excited about tomorrows race. I hope it gets as interesting as it promises to be. If nothing else there will at least be the suspense of whether Lewis's engine holds up.
It's 4 TTs OR 2 races in Rookie class, not the other way around. From a D license onwards it's 4 TTs OR 4 races. And combinations like 2 TTs and 2 races won't work.
(Just thought I should clear this up, just in case).
Hm, interesting graphics. However, since I'm running the skippy again next season my price per run on a track goes down considerably.
btw: I just had my first practice runs at Infineon Long, the track where I started skippy racing last season, and guess what! I was able to shave half a second off my previous offline pb within 9 laps. That's a whole second faster than my current online pb. Needless to say that I'm rather satisfied with myself.
Not only Martin Haven, him and this other guy, Gareth Rees, are marvelous. Best commentating team I know by far. I'm even watching GP2 Asia only because they make it fun.
You know, I thought a while (well, a split-second, actually) about why that is the case and I think I found the answer: Because they enjoy iRacing and can afford it.
I'll race the skippy again and probably cut down on the Adv. Solstice which was supposed to be my main series last season. Due to no internet connection for over 4 weeks it wasn't really a full season for me, so I'm seeing the coming season as my first full one in iRacing.
I'm still contemplating to buy the FM, Road America and Silverstone just to have it and get a little discount with my purchase. If I should go that direction I'll probably throw in a couple of races in the FM, too, also to meet the requirements to move up to B when promotion time comes.
I thought about skipping the FM and go directly to the Radical, but somehow feel it would be best for me to move slowly and climb the full ladder. I'll always be "behind" as far as license class vs. series running goes, but with my limited time and talent that's probably the smartest way to go.
I'm really looking forward to next season, as I feel I'm really starting to get to grips with the skippy and think I can be reasonably fast (to my own standards) and clean now.
It was first announced to be released at Oct. 15th, but due to coding conflicts it was postponed to be released along with the new built, which is in fact expected in 13th week.
