^^^ oh, sorry - your macbook is one of the few exceptions, because of this efi problem - but still every 64bit ready mac from around 2008 can be upgraded and that is not bad for over five year old systems.

still you could get a copy of lion from ebay as it was sold on usb sticks also, mountain lion was the first version to be appstore only.

but depending on what you do with your mac that might be not much better than using snow leopard untill you buy a new computer.

Quote from col :If you have a fairly new mac, the latest os x upgrade is free, if your mac is older, the latest os x update is the price of a new mac = $plenty

My mac runs everything I need it for. Unfortunately, some recent updates for software I use won't install, because the OS I'm using (snow Leopard) isn't supported any more by Apple, so the third parties don't/can't support it either.
Even if I could run the OS versions between Snow Leopard and Maverick, Apple make it VERY hard to buy or download them legally.

please do not spread false statements only to bash apple!

every mac capable of running snow leopard can be upgraded to mavericks!
every mac running at least snow leopard can legally upgrade directly to mavericks for free!
see here: http://www.apple.com/de/osx/how-to-upgrade/

if your particular computer and your user scenario will benefit from that upgrade depends on your personal needs.
if you are afraid that you can not switch back to snow leopard in case something does not work anymore, then make an install on an external harddrive and boot from there to see if maverick fits you - if not, then you can switch back to your original os and everything is like it was before...

dear scavier,

...if it is not about the money, but for the love of the sim, i still don´t get it why you don´t accept at least a little help from the community?

there are some very talented people out there and even if you do not open lfs for modding, please at least think about accepting something the people offer you for free.

we all want lfs to become the greatest driving (racing) simulator of all time, but to reach the goals and include every type of racing class and car you need manhours...

what about that "industrial area" in south city? there are just tiny bits missing to make this part usable and to allow for at least four new combinations with the existing south city track.
and even if it has been repeated a thousand times: why can´t we just drive the vws with its current physics, as we have to learn the new physics on all cars when it will be released anyways?

there is nothing wrong with being independent, but you can´t make it all alone - in the end you need us all to play what you created...

thank you,

@fordman: you can race the power and glory mod online as well.

@eddy: do you use the system settings and the force feedback from your original gtr2 installation or did you push the "player" button in the power and glory launcher to get the newer physics and force feedback?
this overhauled force feedback feels better on the older cars of p&g, but gtr2 forces overall feel horrible if you played lfs before, so do not do that to spoil your own fun - take it for what it is.

and i think i got something confused with gtr2 being free - that was a giveaway from a german magazin, but it still can be found for next to nothing nowaddays if you not already have it somewhere.
the thing was for earlier versions of the power and glory mod you needed a copy of gtr2 and a copy of gt legends to be on the legal side and that copy of gt legends is not needed anymore since p&g mod ver 3.0
also there was an big update a few days ago - details at the blog here: http://www.gtlw.co.uk/

also gtr2 is free now so you can have that and the power and glory mod for many hours of free fun.

yesterday i spent the whole day playing some different racing games / simulators, and even if they all were fun, the change in immersion and feeling when i finally switched to lfs was really astounding!

it was unbelievable how much smoother it ran and how much more the ffb could convince me to be in a real car. the ability to judge and react based on whats visible on the screen and what i feel thru my wheel is so much better than in all the other games. also the sensation of speed and how good one can find the apex in any corner is much better than in everything else i played.

also like one could see in the discussions on 3d - it is not always the best to simulate the reality as close as possible, because there are still some aspects missing that could not be simulated as well. in that case it is best practice to simulate the "best immersion of reality", because it is enough to convince the players mind and must not do more. in 3d for instance there will always be the problem of a fixed distance from the players eyes to the screen and this will only be overcome when a freefield projection technology is invented that really can project objects at different distances. and even then not everybody will have a big enough room for that - so it will probably stay at the current level of simulating a 3d world on a 2d screen. so some aspects of the sim always have to cut corners because of the consumers ability to playback those aspects. (for instance many of us now have wheels with ffb, but not so many of us have 6dof racingseats so the ability of lfs to visually simulate g-forces are a good compromise in that area)

so thank you @scavier for this great game and do not be so hard on your self - simulating real world physics might be the ultimative goal, but even if the new physics are just elaborate estimations they will be the best in sim world, because the actual physics of the game "as it is today" are already the best! so anything you make better from now on will just be "icing on the cake"!

@scawen: thank you very much for that update on the state of lfs!
this is exactly what we were hoping for - some news, something to talk about, something to reflect!

about lfs and community (mod) support: lfs does not have to become "open source" in any way to support mods - there just have to be either shared tools like an editor for cars and tracks (like the one eric got?) or an api that accepts some sort of 3d models and ties them to the lfs kernel and physics.
i do not know how the lfs physics and the visual part of the game are connected and if the new physics are tied to the specific car models or if they are a framework to which new 3d models easly could be linked, but opening the way for content development by the community would surely give lfs one big rush.
to get around quality problems there can be more than one way. one is to allow any mod on a private server so anyone is free to play whatever he wants, but severely restrict the number of mods that make it into the public gaming so noone has to bother with additional downloads.
we have been happy with a small amount of tracks and cars for years so we do not need thousands of mods, only some, but really good ones. there are many talented guys out there - one prime example would be the "power and glory" mod for gtr2.
to further narrow the list of mod entries we could make the evaluation process part of this forum where everyone can show their efforts and we as a community decide which ones are good should make it into the game.
to see if this makes sense and would work we just need the ok from the devs that mods eventually can become real and then make a contest here.
say we make this a contest till xmas and then see how many will enter a track or a car - this will show the talent and how much of it is out there!
and if we were all nice, maybe santa will allow the winners of this competition into the real game?

Get an effing life.

A; I've already posted this.
B; it's people like you that actually stop the type of conversations that happened in the past when actual adults were having a conversation.

I get to deal with idiots like you in my work, there I need to be polite, here, sod off and grow up !

WTF, when things are working then you'll get an update, till then stop thinking that everyone owes you everything and you only get to whine !

what is your problem? i know that there was some posts already telling that scaven has posted, but they were at the end of a long tread not everybody was going to read and the posting from scaven was in a tread about iracing in "ot" which also not everyone will read that is interested in the development of lfs.

if you search my posts i was always friendly but i will surely not let anyone tell me how and what i want to express on a public board!
there are some things heading the wrong direction here and being assaulted by a fellow racer for pointing at the obvious is not right.

we all know that scavier is not owing us anything, because we accepted to be part of an open alpha or beta pase of a great game, but this change in community relations over the last years and the fact that there are some things not released due to reasons beyond our knowledge even if they are made accessible to some people or at some events is still making me feel abandoned by the devs whom we all supported all the way to today.

read my suggestions on better communication or on a small update that i made and do not fight me, because i also want lfs to get in a better shape!

and if too much work is the reason for the slow development, than my question why the lead programmer has to make such forum duties as he did, is very very legit.

and please refrain from using personal insults against a person you do not know at all, as this can lead to a ban from the forums for you! and as the post count clearly shows you seem to have over ten times less of a life as i do...
(note: i will not report you as i do not like that form of discrimination at all, but i can nothing if a mod reads your post!)

as the title says: all your hopes and prayers were heard and there is signs of life at the horizon!

scaven has been active on the boards at least two times in the last past days!

the sad part of this is that all those responses had nothing to do with the development of the game at all!!!

why does the LEAD PROGRAMMER have to do forum moderators duties?
where are the forum mods that are here to help the devs to not waste their valuable time on such minor tasks?

something is going very wrong with this game and this forums...

and now it is time to go elsewhere for a while, because this sad community is not good for my mental health, and it is so sad to watch it slowly die, so i leave while the good memories remain. it was a great decade with a really great game, maybe the good times come back if the old style of "open alpha development" with active communicaton will be established back one day. the only place that was like the old times were the patch test forum treads, but there is no test patch anywhere to be seen...

the reason why scaven is not talking to the community as much as before seem to be that he does not like to get more questions or more rants whenever he says something, because this is then slowing his work and leaving a bad feeling for him.

but the ongoing communication was THE special bit what made this game so special and different to most other games and sims - and it was the beautiful part of being a member of this community that kept so many people supporting the devs.

so please scaven, even if you don´t want that active communication with the members of our fantasic racing enthusiasts comunity anymore, release some status update or statement to show something and YOUR respect for us to read only! then you do not have to bother with all the replies, rants or questions that arise from that statement. just read what you like and release another statement some time later. and don´t be so sensitive either, the forums all over the internet do have the habit that there are more rants than people saying that something is good - that is just the nature of the people, but there are still always more people silently happy than the number of people that complain!!! so get your view on that right and do not let you be so annoyed with those few complaints!

also please let us help you if you have problems with something - there are so many talented people out there able to do any task you are stuck with at the moment. yes, we know since you developed the whole game virtually on your own that might be a problem due to non standard code, but even then you could ask for suggestions or simply hand out time consuming tasks to other people.

why the interiors and rockingham raceway could not be released is beyond anything i can understand, because they have absolutely nothing to do with the new physics of which i understand that they are a very different and complex issue that takes a lot of time to complete on the high standard you aim for.

but remember your first and foremost goal you wanted to realize when you started programing this sim: you wanted to make the best racing simulator in the world COVERING ALL VEHICLE CLASSES AND RACING CIRCUITS OF ALL DIFFERENT KINDS! now years later we still only have some classes of four wheelers and mostly tarmac round roadcourses - what about truck racing? rally? hillclimb? ice racing?

at some point you have to either admit that maybe our grandchildren will see lfs as it was ment to be, or let us, the community, help you realize your dream! and do not let quality be a problem - we all learnt from lots of other games what the people are able to mod and develop - just install a good quality controll system so only top quality mods can be released. if you do not want that more work then why not make this bit a work of the community and just leave the final decisicon to yourself?
even you can manage to test one new car or one new track in a month if we narrowed down the lot for you by doing polls and whatnot here at the forums.

thank you!

since the last couple of years brought no news but vapourware advertisments, the development of this community is turning into a bad direction, but sadly the devs are obviously not doing anything against it.

most of the new treads and communications are questions of "when will it be done?" "where is more content?" or "is it dead, yet?"

so it seems that the devs do not even care anymore and even negative comments are not changing that attitude one bit. they have pulled themself out of the trouble by simply refusing to say anything at all.

so it is true that negative advertising is also just advertising and as long as people come to this board ant talk about the future of lfs there will be some kind of buzz for the game that keeps it from dying completely.

it is obvious that the devs do not care about only having a few paying customers - if they wanted big success they would have changed their business modell years ago.

so what should we as a community do? beg for more content and features again and again? be satisfied with what we got and also don´t care? or shall we do another "new features" petition or another "longest waiting or a patch tread", again?

all that would not change a thing - the only move that would truly alter the state of lfs is if nobody would play it and nobody would comment here.
because if the players leave THEN the game WILL be dead!

then the devs can say to themself:
"oh, see there are no players anymore so we can finally end the development..."

or they hopefully say:
"oh, shit where are all our paying customers gone and where are all the good friends from our great evolving community of equal racing lovers all around the world? it used to be so much fun to race against all those nice people from all over the world. and even if there were bugs in our game and some things were not real enough, with the active part taking of our truly car enthusiastic racers we will develop the best driving simulator of all times!!!"

why on earth are they not even considering doing a small patch with something little in it to show us that they still care? if you followed the discussions then it should be more than obvious that we all LIKE to have great and real new physics, but it is not MORE important than having fun racing and having some intresting new content! even if this new content is not perfect! what about a lx8 challenge? if this car is so undriveable as they said, then it would be the ideal candidate for a narrow cone packed driving skill challenge, where not the one with he most heavy foot will win, but the guy with the most sensitive throttle control!

"dear devs, we fully understand and support your aim to develop the most realistic and greatest driving simulator of all times, but we would not mind if you release something that is not prefect in the meantime! that way we have something new to be happy about and gap the hole to the next big stage in the ongoing development of our most favourite racing game of all times!"

if the devs do not want to communicate or actively develop this game than we players can only vote with our feet and go play elsewhere...

new or used wheel?

g25 and g27 should be possible for that money if they don´t have to be new. just beware of faulty shifters when buying g25! if there is still warranty on the wheel logitech most likely will replace it. my shifter developed the sixt gear / reverse problem near the end of the warranty and logitech even replaced the whole wheel with a brand new one which had no error ever since.

why would a random demo user post this as the very first post?

actually i use slightly different custom cockpit settings for almost every car to create a realistic in car viewpoint for me in relation to my wheel and seating position. doing this my biggest problem is the restricted area of movement for the rearview mirror that i can not adust as good in all cars when i found my favourite seating position.
my line of sight is almost horizontal, because i sit very deep in a playseat and my monitor is about 20cm in front of my wheel on a desk.
sometimes i switch to the bigger plasma screen, but that is then about 80cm to 1m in front of me and has its bottom a bit deeper at about 60cm above ground and the top of the picture is a bit above my eye line so in that case i am looking slightly downwards and have to change the ingame view a bit so the wheel is not covering the gauges.
for fov i think i use the lfs default both on 20´ 1680x1050 or on the 32´with 1280x720.

the ffb in lfs is only coming from the front wheels and so back wheel driven cars might seem to be more realistic feeling in other games with lots of artificial and canned effects. but i also would like to hear what it really is that is not realistic enough in lfs so there might be a chance to make it better. and i am still not sure if a simulator does have to be ecactly like the reality - to me it must simulate the reality in a most convincing way and that can be very different from the real world because our senses can be fooled very easily to believe. you all want to have the uber real driving simulator - so where are your seatbelts and helmets so you don´t get hurt if you crash at 200mph? do you want to die in your living room playing a simulator? if so i would prefer to actually go out and die in any nice fast car on the real nordschleife track!

my best memories are a very active community to developer relationship in the longest alpha stage of any of all the games i ever played in my whole life!
also the fact that this alpha version was better feeling than most of all other fully developed games even get after a lot of patching.
the best was the netcode which was very stable from the beginnig and allowed us real bumper to bumper racing what is not possible in some other games up to this day!

so, now give me the lx8 and the unfinished scirocco and some south city industrial to drive it on to get a bunch of new good memories!

lfs is still one of the games i have installed on my computer for the longest amount of time. even if i do not play online very often i have driven thousands of miles in singleplayer and lan races.

the last two years the waiting got really boring and so i do not play that often anymore, also because i have more other stuff to do an less time.

what i still do not understand is why the attitude of the devs to the community has cooled down so much. lfs was so special with this ongoing development and the active community that wanted nothing but help scavier make lfs the best racing simulator ever. what other game that you played was so good even in its alpha stages?

so my biggest grief is still that they decided not to give us the vws and the lx8 for reasons that are not really valid in my eyes. i does not matter for the fun if the physics are not 100% accurate and we have to learn it all over again when the new physics get released anyways! even with the state lfs is in today it is still one of the best, if not the best racing simulator ever!
also it can´t be that hard to open that little industrial area in south city to expand the existing track untill new tracks for s3 are finished.

but i think slowly it is over - people are getting tired of waiting turn away, what is really sad, because then the devs have one less reason to do anything to keep the existing users happy.

on the playstation they even released a gran tourismo "prolog" at some point and people went crazy buying it because they were hungry for new stuff even if it was not a full game.

so scavier if you need money then please release something small as a intermediate update to bridge the waiting gap to s3 with new physics, day and night time and weather effects (and a rally pack...)!!!
we will buy it!

thank you!

first: the lfs online stats are a wonderful part of the lfs world and they are usefull in so many ways.

but: there is one thing the stats don´t tell you - how much someone drives OFFLINE!

if you look at my stats there are not that much online miles under my belt, but i have driven thousands of laps with every car and on every track!
lfs is meant as an "online-racing-simulator", but it can be used in lan or in singleplayer and then there are no stats.

so just to show the online stats of some player does not mean anything.

yes, the lx 8 was a hard to control monstercar with no other competition in the field of lfs cars, but that is still not a valid point not to release it now.

the grip in game is better now than it was then and if a car is hard to control that is not bad, that is just another challenge for the driver.

if porsche had tought "oh, that 917 is way to hard to control, and it drives circles around the competition, so we better not race le mans in that car or we might win in the end..." then racing history would not been what it has been.

and also the argument of no competition is not really valid, because one could always race single car races, and the f1 and the mrt also are cars that have no direct competition.

but i like the idea of the donkervoort style lx 8 for the gtr class a lot, also!
@eric: there, you go. you know how to make us happy!

but till then, just release those finished cars to bridge the gap, before all players are gone. you can always improve them for s3 if they are not good enough to bring some fun. speaking of fun - if only the perfect programmed physics and graphics are the goal and prevent those two cars from being released - then, why did we have so much fun with the historic lfs versions when sombody sets up a s1 or a 0.04 server?

it is much easier to evolve a growing, loyal fanbase than to get players back who left for whatever reasons.
molocco
S3 licensed
there is one thing the devs could do with little to no effort at all:

please, give us the vw scrirocco and/or the lx 8 to play with, because these cars are already built and have worked inside lfs!

we do not care if they are not 100% accurate, as the rest of the lfs universe is also not 100% perfect and still we all love it!

and, as i said earlier: just mark them as "work in progress, subject to change" an communicate these facts openly to the community.

as lfs in its entirety is still an alpha version, there is no need for perfection before releasing new content. we know that this is an evolving development and this is why many of us are still here, so please include us into the evolution of this game again.

and if you want to give us something real special, the ask eric if he could do a temporary version of the south city "industrial area" track. the outlines of this track are shown on the official track pictures for years now, and most of the track is also there. so, please open these fences and make south city a new experience for us.

if you look at the behaviour of some members of the forum i can understand the frustration on the side of the devs, but in my eyes they should not reduce the communication to a point of near silence. the ongoing discussions and communication between the community and the devs is a big part of what made this game so special over the last years. lfs is by far the game that sits on my hdd for the longest time - what othe game are you playing for that many years, and it is not even finished?
the devs should not give up this special relationship to the loyal community just because of some crap talking people.
because lfs is getting bigger it is fairly normal that the crowd also gets bigger and my reccomendation is to maybe improve the moderation on this board a bit and ask the devs politely if they could do something like a community day every month or every second month.
even if there is nothing "new" to see, many forum members would be satisfied to hear anything from the devs no mater if the just say "hi, to all" or if scaven tells us that he is heavy into coding, just say something.

another thing i still cannot understand is the desicion not to release the vw scirocco just because of the physics change and the fixed gear box (?).
after all this time that reasons are not valid in my eyes. yes the dvs thought it would be easy to fix, but it wasn´t and that delay grew into forever.
when the new physics come out we probably have to learn to drive all cars a new way and that would also be the case for the scirocco. also the argument that the scirocco would not feel right with the current physics is not really a reason not to give it to us to play with it, because if the game physics are flawed then all the lfs cars are affected by this flaw.

if they cared about the community the would have released the lx8 and the scirocco as a "work in progress" subject to change and all would be happy.

now they play a dangerous game which could leave them with a brilliant game physics but with noone that is willing to play, because all are playing elsewhere.

personally i like open game architectures with mod abilities, just because of the lot of people that like to contibute free content to make good games great. i also understand and respect the love of the devs for quality, but there must be a way - maybe with tight moderation and rigid quality control - that user generated content can be brought into lfs.
it doesn´t have to be a open mod database (because of the lot of bad mods that pile up in open mod databases) - maybe a contest where people can show their efforts in moding and modelling and then the best entries can find a way into the game. maybe the devs will let some talented people help them solving problems and doing time consuming work.

some really big things that the human race has done would not be able to be done if they could not have used many man hours on that project.

been playing racing games all my life from the ancient days of outrun and lotus challenge on the c64, gran tourismo on ps1 and 2 to almost every car game ever released for pc. can´t remember exactly how i found lfs, because being an race addict i was into every game magazin and internet blah i possibly could find. this was somewhere around 2003/2004. at the time i had a logtech wheel, but without force feedback. shortly after i switched to a logitech red momo and so i liked lfs from the start, because it was and still is THE best driving simulator out there. nowaddays i play with a g25 and a lovely playseat on a big screen and it is still as much fun as ever.
lfs is one of the oldest games i still play. richard burns rally is still a must ´till lfs rallypack manifests into existence. and then i play need for speed porsche for nostalgic reasons.

my biggest wish is a modular lfs with all the racing game content ever made and a complete simulation of all driveable surface of the world. aka a reality simulation in which i can choose to roam or race or drift wherever i want.

very excited looking forwards in lfs development - new physics, new content, new playmodes (?)...
thank you scavier for making this dream reality!

happy driving,

haters will hate - that´s what they do, and if you let yourself pull into an argument with them they´ll beat you with experience...

anybody who has some self esteem knows that there is no difference wether you race or drift - it´s all about car control and getting closer to the limits.

a (tarmac) racer does his best to keep the car out of drift for speed (in rally racing drifts are often way faster) and the drifter guys do everything to stay in the drift, while both have to stay on the "racetrack". so it´s just opposite sides of the same medal and many people seem to have problems in general to accept this fact.

much of the hate comes from racers and drifters clashing on the same servers, because of the reasons mentioned above those two groups are not compatible, even if they are all car enthusiasts.

and for the argument of drifting not being a sport - after all there are rules and an agreement what particular ability is to judge and score some points. i agree that in some sports this scoring is a bit subjective and corresponds with the personal taste of the judges, but if this is the level on which the contestants are measured than they must fight to win that points. if everybody knows that the "race" is not for being the fastest but for being the prettiest, than the sport is to be more pretty than the others.
so in the end it must be a sport because they are battling for who has the most of something they decided to race for.

to avoid haters you just have to be a bit situation aware. first it´s best to drift on drift servers. if you just start and for whatever the reason want to develop your drifting skills on public race servers instead of the singleplayer mode, then be aware of other racers that join the server after you and not expect you to be drifting around on a race host. in that case leave the server to go drifting elsewhere or switch to racing amongst the other players.

there are way less haters than nice racers and drifters, so just ignoring them is the best bet, just like don´t feed the trolls.
instead have fun whatever your fun is and keep on improving on your personal goals.

perhaps you can save a little more money or do some weekend work to earn some, because most of the cheap racing seats are not very stable and often the wheel base is shaking from left to right.
if you can get a little more money there is a limited time offer for the playseats evolution chair with in included seatslider and gearshiftholder here:

i have this same chair for a few years now and i like it very much.
