Quote from BigPeBe :It's this thingy here.

Oh and you may notice that I don't have the wires connected to it, that's because I don't use it. At least during summer the ICV isn't really needed, it usually only helps a bit during the startup and raises the idle when the engine is cold. I plugged it off because it only made my idle to randomly go up and down and sometimes it even kept open thru a pull so the AFR went a bit more lean than I wanted it to do.

The ICV shouldn't really affect the AFR, it only gives a bit more air to the engine during idle if needed to correct the RPM.

Maybe your fuel pressures are off? Try changing the fuel pressure regulator to another one.

Or maybe it's the MAF? My MAF is modified so it "fools" the ECU to give richer AFR, but my engine is a bit tuned so it's needed. If your engine is stock it should also have stock MAF.
There is also the screw on the MAF from where you can adjust the idle AFR, tho it doesn't have a big effect so if your AFR is massively rich it doesn't probably help.

Thanks PeBe,

Took off the ICV and opened it up and cleaned it with carb cleaner (Tip from an "efi specialist") Seems to have helped a touch, but its still a bit random on idle. Havnt tried it unplugged, all i know is that using the vacumm pipe to the regulator unplugged (like an extra air intake) makes everything run fine! Havent got a spare regulator, and dont fancy spending lots of money on a new one! going to try a few more things first. Thanks for the help

Quote from BigPeBe :200bhp from 2 litre Pinto is very reasonable. It is possible to produce that with good headwork and with good cam and 45 sidedrafts and you are still able to produce a nice torque curve with the engine pulling nicely from lower revs too. But for my knowledge the problem is that 200bhp usually requires revs going up to 8k and I have heard that the original internals can't take +7k without the fear of destroying the pistons. Same goes for the very popular Mahle pistons. If you wan't to be able to rev it safely a lot you need more expensive internals to take it.

If I would now have the money, I would probably take the current engine out. Use the original 205 iS block and internals and get a big valve head and select a "fast road" cam with powerband going "only" up to 7k. And then get 45 Dellortos and get them tuned in dyno. 170bhp would be very likely possible and I could set the rev limit somewhere around 7k, or just be sure to not give it more.

But oh well this is just all day dreams. I have to do my mandatory military service so I'm not going to able to make money probably at least for a year now.

Nothing to do with this, but thought it might make more sense this way....
Where abouts is the idle control valve on the Efi system? Have you got a diagram/photo? I get rich running on idle and its sluggish at low rpm. But pulling off the vacum pipe to the fuel regulator sorts out the idle problems and it idles fine. Any ideas? Been told to clean the ICV out but not sure how or where it is.

Quote from BigPeBe : I'm pretty aware of the Ford Pinto engines, there's one in my current car, not that powerful really but it has a bit of a grunt. They are so popular and there is so much knowledge floating around. Tho on some things I think I would have to rely on professional tuners to get it right, like cam timing or getting the right combination of valves/springs/rocker arms for the cam I would be using.
It's just a shame I can't get working on them currently because I don't have the money and time now. Maybe in few years...

I know somewhere you can read up on the know how and not need much money, know a guy who makes 200bhp pinto 8valves just with head work (and hes just set up my Efi system)

Right, a little update on the capri. Should hopefully be on fuel injection next weekend! The carbs are playing me up, and its about time I got it done, so going to see a man with a shed who knows his engines (a race car with a home built/tuned BMW 2.5 N/A M10 engine with 250bhp and at one point a E30 m3 S14 16v evo2 engine turbo'd at 13psi to get 600bhp)
So hopefully ill have a few pics of the install some time this month to show you guys.

Yeah, would think it would have a limiter at that age. My limiter is when the conrod lets go

The ratios and diff are pretty similar to my capri in some ways (your diff/final ratio is 0.2 shorter and your 5th is the same as my 4th gear) But going back to the topic, 60 is about your limit for 3rd, but its good for a short burst overtaking. (personally if i need to get by QUICK i use 2nd from 40-60, but then my ratio is a touch longer)
Is your engine injection or carbed? Could do a bit of tuning (the better you are at DIY the better) to help it out.

Jakg, going back to the no power business. Im pretty sure your car doesnt give up at 45 in 3rd. Looking at the powerband, you get max torque at 3,000rpm, that pretty low down so dont see while you'd have a problem. As for gearing, says the top gear ratio (ie 5th) is 1:1 and the final drive is 3.6, so im pretty sure your 3rd gear is good for 60-70 mph. And get that rev counter working! cant be that hard, guessing it isnt the MPi model so is probably still on a dizzy rather then coil packs, so can check either end of the wiring to see what gone wrong.

Quote from Jakg :Just to bump this thread...

A few thousand miles on I think i'm falling more and more in love with my car - the only problem is that I wish it had a little more in-gear acceleration for overtaking...

I'm guessing the out-of-gear accelleration is fine then?

What do you mean by in-gear? Just all through the rev range, or low revs? high revs? Bit more detail might be able to sort it out without buying a new car.

Minardi most definately. Great atmosphere about the team, just did it for the racing. And look at some of the talent theyve found over the years, got a double world champion out of it!

If you can put in more info It could help pick the right car. ie.
your most common/typical jurneys
Budget (both for the car, tax and insurance)
Any type of car in particular youre going for?

(I did skim read the thread but couldnt find an answer to these qs)

Would be good fun to drive. Remember the ford puma is based on the original Ka. This one has a bigger engine then the puma with the same sporty setup, sounds like a good mix to me (though ive not driven one i must admit)
