Can't really give any useful advice if you just want to dip your toes in photography but if you're anyway serious then a used D300 with Nikkor 50mm/f1.8 might just fit the budget and you'd have plenty of camera for years to come either as your main camera or backup body.

Pro-Nikkor lenses are very expensive just like pro-Canons. Canon has more el cheapo mid-price stuff but Nikon and Pentax have decades worth of used lenses available on eBay.

From March-April or so. This year's Vappu was a rainy and gray one compared to last year.

Long time no see. My house went under renovation so I've been more or less homeless and crashing on people's sofas and floors from end of April. Internet access and computer time have been in the pre 90's figures for me. Been photographing a lot though so I'll try to raise my Flickr up from the dead from this day on and uploading shots from the past months.

Been edging a burnout lately at my work but gotta keep shooting. Done a lot of assignments and delivered lot of images lately (though haven't had time to post any stuff) and I can kinda feel the gears turning slowly towards some obscure goal of leaving my real work.

I did feel a bit proud after I obliterated Finland's 2nd biggest newspaper documenting a local team challenge race last Saturday. 150-200 participants in pro- and fun/amateur teams running, cycling and travelling through Tampere finishing challenges and earning points. I was attached to one of the organizers and we drove from point to point checking the action a couple of minutes per challenge.

Here's a small selection from the warm-up and start rush. Portraits, mood, action, the usual. Hope you enjoy!

Anyone tried it yet? Yes, I know, pointless gaming thread but if it (kinda) involves Jeremy Clarkson, prostitutes and murders it's gotta be good.

Quote from Töki (HUN) :Few pics I took today. I guess they're not that great, but I'm a noob at photography. Auto settings, Sony DSC-H50.

Comments are welcome, it would be good to know what to improve.

Key to good car photographs: avoid ugly cars.

Other than that, what lens are you using or is it a point & shoot?

Better compositions, better lens, heavier PP in that order.

EDIT: Ok, it's a superzoom with max aperture of f2.7. Leave the silly auto, macro and landscape modes at the door and go aperture priority for a while and start experimenting with shallower depth of fields for subject isolation. Aperture priority locks your aperture to your choosing (usually wise to set it at max aperture=smallest number) and the camera does it's best to expose correctly by adjusting shutter speed and ISO (if you have ISO auto controls). Aperture priority might drop your shutter speed too slow and give you motion blur but without knowing what/when/how you shoot, it's up to you to learn how your camera exposes and what's the slowest shutter speed you are comfortable shooting depending on the scene.

Quote from Tomba(FIN) :Dishwasher does the job

Don't listen to him. The chemicals might harm the sensor.

You can clean the sensor by pouring syrup and seeds in the mirror box and leave it out for the pigeons and small rodents to pluck the dust off.

You'd be nuts to buy a new smartphone now.

Late summer should buy you a plenty more phone and smarts when first WinMo7 phones arrive and HTC Evo (hopefully) is available.

This is just my personal opinion so don't take this the wrong way but aren't Samsung phones a piece of crap? Tried them in stores next to Iphone and HTC stuff and the Samsung were laggy, slow, horribly designed bricks.
