Well, went out today. It's a good 15 degrees warmer today - if that matters, and I didn't hear it at all. Turned the wheel, and no bubbles came out. Although last time I had been driving a lot longer before the noise appeared, so IDK. Will let it go and see what happens.
I'll do that first thing with my friend next time I go out. How would air get in? Does that usually mean a leak, or that the pump is going bad or what?
Next chance I get, I'll see if my phone will record the noise. Thanks for all the ideas, but I'm fairly confident it isn't anything other than the pump or the belt. There are no other side effects other than the noise. I don't think the steering got any heavier when the noise occurred. What I can say is that the more gas I give, the louder it is. As soon as I turn the wheel, that's when it makes the sound. We just had an ice storm yesterday, but it's been a lot colder these past few weeks than it was yesterday, so I don't think the cold is the issue.
When it first cropped up, I topped off the power steering fluid thinking that might be the issue, and went driving around. After awhile the sound stopped, so I thought that may have fixed it, but then it came back again.
I was out driving yesterday. We went to a few stores, so there was lots of stopping and starting and I think at least an hours worth of driving involved before the noise appeared. I can say that the engine does not lose power, I did not have the aircon on, it's not an electrical issue - I think, because I wasn't having any other problems, and it's most definitely not the brakes.
Maybe it does have air - but the steering does not get heavy at all.
I'll take a vid next time I go out. Thanks again for the help.
Curious - how come you're going from an 8600 to an 8800? Did you buy the computer in a store and are now upgrading it? Or did you make the mistake of getting an 8600 and are now getting the 88?
Yeah - possibly. But if he was able to post all that without getting banned, and without having ever contributed anything to this forum/community, I think I can tell my ant story without any major repercussions...
I know it was more than we wanted to spend. It was likely more for you guys though. Someone on here the other day told me a base Legacy was $50,000. A decked out one over here doesn't quite make $40,000.
It's obviously difficult to describe a sound. The best I can relate it to is a cross between the sound an excavator makes - as I said, and the sound of a circular saw cutting something and getting slowed down. I'm not good at this stuff, but it sounds to be something that would have more to do with a motor than a belt. Like I said though, it's pretty much the same sound you hear when other cars make the sound.
I realize it's stupid to ask this on a forum, but anything to avoid a pointless $70 fee.
Yesterday I accidentally stepped on an ant. It was still squirming, so I tried to save it. I put it in a cup and brought it home. I watered it, and fed it some seeds. But it refused to eat. Next thing I knew it died. That is why I am so pissed off. Thank you, dear LFS community, for helping me through these difficult times. Everyone here is so nice and friendly. Your support has made it possible for me to continue on my path to success. If only the world was one giant LFS community, then surely mankind would achieve the greatest state of harmony and zen that ever was.
My sincere gratitude goes out to all but one member of this forum. Thank you [almost] all of you.
Yeah. The pump was actually replaced just 20,000 miles ago. Because the steering rack was leaking and the thing had been running dry, so it was shot to hell. Thing is, we decided not to replace the rack since he told us that, although we should replace it, it looked like it wasn't leaking that badly anymore because it was all gummed up. I top it off now and again, but it doesn't leak. Odd that it'd go after just 20,000...
I use X-Plane. Not as pretty, but it's like LFS in terms of realistic aircraft handling. In fact, it's almost exactly the same. It's like three guys going up against Microsoft. The graphics are nowhere near as much eye-candy, but it's hailed as much more realistic since it actually models airflow over the aircraft. In fact, recently he upgraded the tire physics for when you are on the ground to what he called "car simulation level" realism.
Alright, help me out guys. Subaru will charge $70 for a stupid diagnostic - which in this case would involve listening to a noise. You all know those older cars with the loud power steering pump noises. Well, I've got that - except in a strange way (I think) because it only occurs when I'm revving the engine. So only, for example, when I'm accelerating and turning at an intersection. If I just coast around a turn - it doesn't make the noise. If I sit in a parking lot and turn the wheel, no noise. But if I rev the engine (in neutral) and turn the wheel - loud noise. It sounds almost the same as what I've heard other cars do (you know - like the sound an excavator makes when it's digging around.) I just find it odd that the noise only occurs when the engine is being revved - because the power steering is working all the time.
If anyone has any ideas as to what it is - please let me know. I was thinking the power steering belt - but, again, it's just odd that the noise only occurs under acceleration (unless that's how it always happens.) I've topped up the fluid, so that's not the issue. The sound just kind of appeared in a matter of minutes after more than an hours worth of driving around town without any problems. Thanks for the help!
Trust me, you don't want to fiddle with overclocking. At least not yet. That'll be further on down the road. And unless you really put a decent amount of money into your computer, you aren't going to get much out of overclocking before things start overheating.
Well, actually - you have a good point there. You never know what kinds of pranksters live around there and have seen you doing those high-speed night runs. I remember my dad told me once he was riding his motorcycle at night on a road he DIDN'T know, and next thing he knew someone had put one of those concrete blocks that are normally in parking spaces across the road. He hit it, went airborne and landed under the motorcycle and slid like 200 feet. He says if it wasn't for his leather jacket he'd probably be dead. Had the bone sticking out of his elbow though. The people probably thought it'd be funny if a car hit it (to whatever extent funny is when you destroy your front axle and the airbags deploy) but likely didn't consider what'd happen if a motorcycle came by. Yet another reason why to not race on public roads.
Oh, and just to clear this up now, no he wasn't SPEEDING. He was going under the speed limit but he came around a bend and couldn't do anything about it.
I've been using Autodesk Inventor since Freshman year in high school. In college now we're using Inventor 2008. I have to say that this is one of the most intuitive pieces of software ever designed. Maybe they're all this simple, but the point is - if it looks daunting, it SERIOUSLY isn't. Within an hour of fooling around you'll be making all kinds of 3D objects. It's incredibly easy.
EDIT: Lol - I didn't read far enough down the thread. Anyway - see how simple it is?! The best part is applying different materials to the object and then rendering it. Looks great.
Godammit. FINALLY a cop that looks like he might be a nice guy - but he gets banned. How come cops speeding to EMERGENCY SCENES get banned, but cops racing to DOUGHNUT SHOPS don't?
I'm trying to make my first ever skin, and the main issue I'm having is getting the skin colors to line up where they should. Is there anyone who could spend 3 minutes just lining up the color-change between the A-Pillars and the fenders, and where the doors open up? If so, I'd really be grateful.
There are 1,000,001 reasons why that post suggests that you are the idiot and not the rest of the world. Here are but a few:
1. So, uh, it's either you're a complete idiot - or the rest of the LFS community is a collective slime of stupidity. The odds are TOTALLY in your favor.
2. I've found that use of curse words is directly proportional to the stupidity of the person using them.
3. I've never had to call anyone to get help. This forum has served me well in thoroughly answering any and all questions I've ever had. If you actually needed to call someone to get help, you either didn't look hard enough on the forum, or didn't realize that the whole point of this forum is you can ASK the question YOURSELF and get answers within, usually, minutes.
4. Directly threatening people online is simply childish, and only adds to the impression of complete lack of intelligence that we get from reading this post.
5. LFS doesn't have to PROVE anything to you. The fact of the matter is that it has ALREADY proven that it is not a "crappy company" so regardless of what you believe, you are mistaken.
6. If you've seen nothing but bullshit for 1.5 years, you must really, REALLY be doing something wrong. The only thing I can compare that to is standing in front of a Ferrari and STARING from 1" away at the one bird dropping on the whole car for 15 minutes and then turning around and saying "this is complete bullshit." You've obviously missed EVERYTHING.
7. No replies? Hmmm... if you didn't want replies you wouldn't have posted this. If you really believe the LFS community is as corrupt and decrepit as you describe, I doubt you'd think that this post would possibly make a difference. No - you DO want replies.
8. What in the hell happened to get so so incredibly angry all of a sudden. This post was definitely a spur-of-the-moment thing, considering the consistent use of curse words and the poor grammar. So what was it?! PRAY TELL.
Oh, and by the way, the correct title for this thread would either be "Why am I pissed off?????" or "Why I am pissed off!!!!!"
And while we're on the subject, learn the whole 'your' vs. 'you're' thing please.
Sweet. If you can get this working, I can see it being implemented widely in the serious racing servers. It'd be a great way to add some realism to the game.
