I also have a very good CRT monitor (21" I believe). Hate to toss it, but I guess it's old hat now. It's the flat screen type with the two very dim grey horizontal lines (I forget what that tech was called).

Also just found a buttkicker gamer - I'm not sure if it still works. I used it once and even wrote a review here a long time ago. I'm going to toss this today so please respond fast. Cleaning out my parents house

Hi all, I used to play this game many years ago. I found my old G25 pedals. They appear to be in very good condition. If anyone wants them and can pick them up, please email me: jonaqua at gmail dot com

I'm in Orange County/Westchester NY. I probably won't respond to forum messages.

I will probably throw them out if I don't get any replies.

Thanks

Quote from Forbin :I've never been but I've heard good things about V17.

V17 is OK. The karts are battery powered. I haven't been there in a long time. If you go there often it gets expensive - but I guess it's the same with any of those karting places. I've heard GPNY is much better but I've never been there.

If it's in NY I'll go - even if I don't play this game much anymore

There's GPNY in westchester:

Thanks for posting that Juls. I've been wanted to post about this ever since I read the new release thread - I've just been really busy. This for me is also the most exciting news in years. Devs thank you very much - this is awesome.

I haven't actually tried it out yet since I'm still in the process of moving and I'm lacking the essentials... like a desk. I'm a little confused about how it actually works. Juls can you provide more info?

A while ago I was really interested in this technique:

http://local.wasp.uwa.edu.au/~ ... miscellaneous/domemirror/

...in which multiple views are rendered, combined and distorted in software and then projected across a spherical mirror onto a dome giving an undistorted image for the person in the center of the dome. Pros are only one projector is necessary, but cons are you need a dome ($$$) and a first surface spherical mirror (~$200).

I actually started trying to implement this - I even built a dome out of the cheapest material I could get... (See picture). But unfortunately it was too large to fit in my apartment and my parents did not exactly like a dome taking up their entire living room. That and, after I constructed it I realized I should have made a "paneled" dome.

Anyway, I thought LFS would simply offer the ability to output different views to different monitors but it looks like it's more advanced than this. How exactly do you take the cylindrical projection and project it undistorted? What if you have a half-dome (rear or front projection)? Can it also render any viewport? Like 60 degree angle above the driver?

Thanks!

Cool. If you don't mind asking, how much does the stock G25 wheel weigh vs the CF one? Notice any difference in FFB?

Neat. I built my own out of extruded aluminum a while ago and it is fairly similar in design. Heres some suggestions:

1) Include an optional keyboard tray. Mine doesn't have one and it's very difficult to pick up the keyboard off the floor while racing. Originally I didn't care (a real car doesn't have a keyboard holder afterall!) but sim racing != real racing and you do need to use the keyboard occasionally (whether it's to save a replay, change pit commands, apologize to someone, etc.).

2) Upload some better quality photos - include some with different size monitors sitting on the stand. Many people who buy cockpit tends to have very large LCDs and don't feel comfortable with their monitor/LCD tv hanging halfway off of the stand. A video wouldn't hurt either!

3) The top wheel/monitor stand looks fairly thin - not sure if it would present problems mounting other wheels like fanatecs (never used it).

4) I'm not sure if optical mice will work well on reflective surfaces so perhaps include a mouse pad (if monitor stand intended to be used for mouse).

5) Not sure if it's necessary, but it would be better if the shifter mount was adjustable too. Mine is positioned perfectly in all 3 dimensions based on my real car and it feels very natural.

thewayiplay.com is a good community for cockpit builders/fans - you can probably get some good feedback there too.

good luck!

I see over that two year period you also mastered teh art of the one handed driving. I thought I was watching a Bunta Fujiwara (?) tribute video with the whole one handed cigarette anime music combination.... weird..! Nice car choice though.. I had a `99 sport.

I just picked a car I thought would benefit from H&T, picked a random track, summed the controller configs for the top 10 hotlaps from all track configs (with more than 10 hotlaps):

LX6 @ South City (all configs with atleast 10 hotlaps)
4 button clutch
104 autoclutch
3 clutch/shifter
--------------
3/108 hotlaps are using clutch/shifter and I have a good feeling a large percentage of those 104 AC have G25 wheels

Quote from Fox 2 :"No, it will slow you down as will the sst shifter."

Can't agree. Have you tried driving with shifter long enough, like, at least a month? It's really not that harder and I can't see any reason, why it should be slower. Perhaps in an hour race yes, shifter driver is at a slight disadvantage, since there is some chance of a misshift happening, but as for tiredness, I wouldn't be worrying about that, when you're comfortable with shifter, you don't really use a lot of extra effort to use it.

I always drive with shifter/clutch. Shifting itself isn't tiring - H&T is, especially on smaller sprint tracks with heavy pedals like mine.

No, it will slow you down as will the sst shifter. See for yourself. Look at the S2 hotlap charts. Case in point - RAC at blackwood, arguably one of the more difficult RWD cars to drive in LFS. Nearly all the fastest times on blackwood are using autoclutch. For other RWD cars, autoclutch isn't used as much, but basically, none of the fastest times are done using an axis clutch and/or manual shifter. It may help improve "your" time right now, but you will always be at a disadvantage. Given two equally skilled drivers over a 20 lap race, the driver moving his arms and feet like a madman will always make more mistakes and get tired faster than someone simply "clicking" a paddle. But if you're looking to get the most realism out of this "simulator" then you should definitely use clutch/shifter/h&t.

1) I didn't read this whole thread
2) I didn't watch the video
3) I'm not a professional racer
4) I'm not an engineer

On my road car I still have my dedicated winter tires on even though it's summer. Since the limits on these tires are so low, I tend to get sideways atleast a couple of times a day - they're pretty fun

Anyway, I took a short aggressive sprint on a 60F degree (~16C) day (sideways through multiple turns). I came to a stop and when the light turned green I began accelerating fairly slowly. For the first time ever, I was actually caught off guard in the car. The tires were spinning at ~1500 RPM in second gear while accelerating VERY slowly (if anyone's familiar with RX-8s you know they don't make hardly any power at this RPM). I had to be very very easy on the throttle to avoid getting the car sideways. At ~3k rpm the rear end was sliding back and forth while I was driving at or below 35-40mph. It basically felt like I was driving on ice. Obviously, the winter tires were not designed to operate at this temperature and I had overheated them pretty bad on my short sprint. But I never really expected that it was possible for tires to behave like this at such low speeds with such slow acceleration. I felt exactly like LFS after doing burnouts for a while.. In fact, I found that these tires feel exactly like LFS's tires (even though the limit on my winter tires is lower - LFS has a reduced sense of speed so the driving experience actually feels similar).

Completely unrelated to your question, but if you want to make the game feel every more realistic I recommend building/buying a good cockpit. I built mine with the same dimensions as my car. With all the controls in their natural position it feels 1000x more realistic.

Though I haven't really played any new games since the N64 era, it doesn't get much better than the old school NES and SNES games for me.

NES games were simple, addicting and fun. The SNES of course added better graphics and sound with the best console controller ever created before the world got stupid and complicated everything with analog sticks.

I can play those old NES games over and over.... Mario, Contra, Gradius, Excite bike, dr mario, punch out. If you ever get bored, grab some beers, get 10 of your friends and have an old school NES tournament It can get pretty intense. I hold the record for the most ownage in contra staying alive to the last level on one life (though I didn't get a chance to finish... I would have beat it on one life grr!).

SNES has some of the best games ever created, Mario World, Mario Kart (10000x better than the N64 one), etc. Top Gear anyone? And of course the best game of all time, Chrono Trigger.
One for victor :) cannot remove myself from team on LFSworld. Team does not exist

I figured I should remove myself from my former team on LFS world since I have not raced with them in several years and the website has vanished. After searching this forum, I found out I'm supposed to do this from the Racers Database -> LFS Teams Search but the team does not appear in that list. However, it still shows me as part of the team in my profile.

Team: digiServ racing club
Abbrev: [dSRC]

May someone remove me manually? Perhaps when a team is "deleted" (which I think is what happened here?) all "members" should also be removed (?)

p.s. sorry dSRC people

I don't think many people use the hi-res skin option. My guess is ~<5% of LFS users (?) People don't like paying for software.... So I understand the OP's point. He spends hours of his time making nice looking skins but they look like garbage to 95% of the users. I think the problem with this idea is that as Bob said, it can't coexist with the current system. If we introduce a way for people to get hi-res skins for free, than no one's going to use the current system (where you pay to see other's hi-res skins). Do you really want a system where "you" have to pay to make the game look better on someone "else's" computer?

Anyway, I finally put $ in my account for hi-res skins a few days ago - I don't know why I didn't do this earlier. The game looks fantastic now (especially with the revolution mod).

Quote from The Moose :I'm not saying this in any sort of rFactor hater style, but really the only mods that are good are HistoriX, The Caterhams and the Corvette.

Then again if you've never played iRacing or nKPro you may be a little more forgiving about what you call good mods

The HistoriX mod is just beautiful to drive.

Dead Men Racing are running a HistoriX server most evenings now, and we're having a ball with it. It is private though so anyone wanting to join in the fun should sign up at the DMR forums for the password.

There's a list of the tracks we are using (more will be added as we go) and a place to download them (so we don't get any of the endless mismatch problems) in the fourm.

The link to the forums is in my sig.
Come along and enjoy some clean, fair and fun racing with us.
The more the merrier!

EDIT:- You need a copy of GT legends to install the HistoriX mod as it used Simbins car models. It doesn't install GTL or starforce, it just checks that you have a valid copy, that's all. GTL can be picked up for next to nothing these days.

Thanks I'll check it out...

To prevent this in the future, you can use the clutch to launch even if you don't use it while racing. This way you can ensure you're in the proper gear when the lights go green. You'll probably be a bit quicker off the line too...

Neat,

I never knew this company existed. How much does a cyberseat retail for?

It would be cool if it worked with any wheel/pedal set (G25, Porsche) and it had a shifter mount. CST pedals are probably way too heavy for this thing though...

It has only been out 7 years? I guess I screwed up the stats too. For some reason I remember playing this in high school (year 2000) but I guess it may have been college... too much alcohol I guess

Perhaps instead of asking for years it should list LFS versions. (beta, S1, S2)...

Like silver said, there's over 500 other servers for you to choose from while there's only 2 for those who want to drive in a "full simulation" server. As much as I like this idea, I have a feeling it's going to be empty (for me) most of the time as I'm the USA and it's an australian (?) server...

Who would have ever thought that a group devoted towards ultimate realism would be considered a "niche" group in a driving simulator that states "YOU have to do the driving"...

How many of the people complaining about realism are using manual clutch, h-shifter, and 720 degrees of rotation in road cars?

And, what's worse...?
1) Someone using a handbrake in a road car
2) Someone using a button clutch, autoclutch, small degrees of rotation, or paddle shifters in a road car?

One exists in LFS's road car counterpart, the other's do not. Silly argument...
