Quote from -NightFly- :So what harm is done by asking some advice in this thread?

The question I was asking was: "what do people expect to gain by posting in this thread?" What harm, if any, occurs has nothing to do with what people expect to gain from posting here. (I really would like to know what people who post in this thread wanting advice expect to gain from doing so, but everyone seems to want to start side arguments)

Of course not everyone is as smart as me. I'm pretty far down there, but I'm not the stupidest person in existence.

The subject (well, technically "gerund" according to wikipedia, but "subject" for sake of simplicity) of that sentence is "what people expect to gain by posting their personal issues in this thread." Replying with "Because they can?" to that makes absolutely no sense.

Let this be a lesson to people reading through this thread to avoid using sentence fragments!

People can what?

I honestly don't see what people expect to gain by posting their personal issues in this thread, really. Instead of coming on here and stating a problem and waiting for advice, just figure things out yourself. As long as you don't say anything that's horribly virulent, provocative, or perverted, the worst that will likely happen is you will get rejected, unless the person you're talking to, or their loved ones or significant other(s) aren't sane. Or if you aren't sane and don't realize what is and isn't a bad thing to say.

Quote from Boris Lozac :Man, that BMW looks bada*s

No it doesn't. First of all, at best it's a 530i. Second of all, blacked out tail lights are dangerous and not cool.

After getting in two accidents and getting pulled over twice, I no longer drive like an idiot.
First time I got in an accident there was no damage to my car but the other person's front bumper got ripped off. Basically, they backed out of their driveway without stopping and I slowed to like 10mph, and then I saw her start accelerating so I just start going like half throttle and then she was still pulling away so I floor it, and at about 40mph I feel the back end of my car shake to the right. Bitch hit my rear bumper. So I go onto the gravel on the side of the road and she goes shooting past me still accelerating, and then slams on her brakes and pulls over. Insurance company blamed it on me. Even though she was in my blind spot and we were both going at least 40mph in a 25mph zone.

Second time, I was a dumbass and went too quickly into a corner, started understeering, braked, then spun the other way and slammed into a guardrail. $600 later, I replaced the bumper, bumper cover, and two front fenders. Would have been less, but $140 of that is freight shipping, $70 was a makita angle grinder. Oh, and the spaceframe/unibody got damaged, but oh well.

I got pulled over for going 50mph in a 25mph zone, paid $900 for a lawyer and ended up not getting charged with anything.

Went 40mph in a 25mph zone to get through a yellow light, cop gave me a verbal warning.

Unrelated, but I blew my engine because it ran out of oil, but the low oil pressure light didn't come on until 1 second before the engine shut off. It still spins, so it's not seized. Have no idea what's wrong with it, haven't had the chance to take it apart. Got a motor from a junkyard for $450, and spent $100 in tolls and fuel driving to go pick it up with my friend. So, being an idiot with my car has cost me $1600. Got the car for free from my parents at least. I did a bad job at putting the junkyard engine in, I get a P0300 code occasionally, and the transmission (automatic ) makes funny sounds. Probably going to get a different car. Or I may fix it properly, not planning to spend more than $1000, since I got the car for free anyway it may be worth it.

All of that was enough for me to learn my lesson. I still have some fun driving spiritedly, but not so unsafe that I'm anywhere near losing control.

Quote from Klutch :Since when is girls getting their periods early a genetic disorder?

I never said it was. You're at least reading all the sentences in the post, but you're not comprehending all of the information in them I suppose. Note that I'm not trying to be mean by the use of bold, just trying to make you understand my post better.

Quote from Timo1992 :Yep because teenagers are not kids.

Well, pedophilia is technically being sexually attracted to pre-pubescent children. I think that whether or not someone has hit puberty or not should determine whether it's illegal to do the dirty with them or not. If they're old enough to get pregnant, then I don't see why it should be illegal. Though there should still be a minimum age because some children might get some genetic disorder or something that causes them to go through puberty way earlier or something like that.

Quote from BlueFlame :dan, ALL women love attention, that's why they are so persistant in trying to make us listen to their whiney demands!

Men have more whiney demands than women these days. Just look at this thread!

Anyway, I don't have a girlfriend and never have had one. I don't feel that I need a significant other, (or others ). I do, however, feel a personal moral obligation to procreate. Don't need a girlfriend for that, though. I can always become a sperm donor! I just really don't want to waste my life worrying about loving someone and/or being loved. But life is fluid, and my opinions may change later in life, for better or for worse.

Quote from tristancliffe :Yes, but the high velocity air (at higher rpms) moves for a shorter period of time. Ignoring the fact that clever design can effectively overfill a cylinder (the >100% volumetric efficiency that you refer to) because it's a very small effect in terms of this discussion, a cylinder is filled with all the air the throttle allows.

Then why does the torque curve of engines increase until the point at which the intake valves, cylinder head, intake manifold, throttle, and air intake can no longer allow the cylinder to fill fully with air, or so I thought?

Quote from tristancliffe :The throttle is what controls the amount of air. Nothing else does directly.

But isn't the mass air flow determined by throttle and RPM, not just throttle alone? I was under the impression that throttle determines the density of the air, and the RPM determines the velocity of the air.

Quote from BlakjeKaas :Full throttle is full throttle.

But throttle alone does not define how much air is going into the engine, and therefore does not determine how much fuel is being consumed. Most simply, the amount of air flowing through an engine is determined by throttle, RPM, and volumetric efficiency, neglecting the temperature of the air, etc.

A claim I'd like to make is that consumption, economy, and efficiency are three different things. Consumption is the rate at which fuel is consumed, liters per minute for example. Economy is the fuel which the vehicle uses for a given distance traveled, such as liters per 100 kilometers. Efficiency is how much energy is outputted with respect to the amount of energy theoretically available in an amount of fuel, usually around 20%-30% on gasoline engines.

It's possible for one vehicle to consume more fuel than another, be more efficient, yet have worse fuel economy.

EDIT: Though, I've just realized that amp88 said that both scenarios are at 7000RPM and their rev limiters are at 7000RPM. This is not enough information to tell which is consuming more fuel if they're bouncing off the rev limiter. If there is no rev limiter, and both engines are spinning at a constant 7000RPM, full throttle, and everything else is constant (temperature, pressure, etc) then I'd say they're both using the same amount of fuel.

Quote from dadge :i was always under the impression that a digital signal is either on or off (like a digital joypad) and an analog signal is progressive (like the analog sticks on said controller).

That's correct, I was just saying that when you're talking about VGA, the data is digital when it's on the computer anyway, and converting it to analog before sending it to the monitor doesn't make the quality any better.

Quote from dadge :
for me, i'd only notice the difference when something goes wrong. if there's dust on the record, there will be clicking sounds. but on cd, it would skip and sound horrible. a lot of people prefere vinyl only because that even when there's an imperfection (dust or small scratches or warp) it can sometimes add to the overall "feel" of the record. whereas on cd, it's just a nasty skipping sound. there's not many things in this world that can be better when damaged or dirty.

I agree with that. I keep my vinyls clean with a swiffer cloth, it really keeps alot of the dust off. And I have pretty good needles (Shure m44g) which are low-wear needles. (low wear for DJ needles, at least. Audiophile needles probably wear the record even less) All of my vinyl has fewer scratches than my CDs. I've actually never purchased a CD. All the CDs I have were free.

You appear to want to start an argument. I just want to make sure that people don't get too much false information.

Modern, digital computers are digital machines. Colors in your computer are digital. Your computer uses a color pallate. The colors are NOT infinitely varied over VGA. Sure, it's an analog signal, but you're not getting any more colors than what is represented in the data on your computer. You lose absolutely no color information with a digital video output versus VGA, when the data is digital in the first place when it's rendered on your computer.

Vinyl vs. CD, on the other hand is a completely different situation. On Vinyl, the signal varies infinitely, whilst on a CD it is represented digitally, and therefore you lose some information. The closer you approach the nyquist frequency, the more the signal becomes a triangle wave. This is of course way different than VGA vs. digital.

EDIT: Come to think of it, one actually could make an analogy with VGA and listening to a CD. When you listen to a CD, the digital signal is converted to analog. But you don't have the same information as a signal that was analog in the first place, because the data started out as digital. Same with VGA. Sure, the output is analog, but it was derived from digital information. Vinyl is to CD as real life is to VGA.
