Personally, I think the specracer is the best car in iRacing right now. It's even better than the skippy, imo, and I really loved that one when I still drove it. I'm going to be racing it exclusively on the RC side this season.

Licence wise that's serious down-racing for me, but who cares. I'm A licenced and have really nowhere to go. Pro will not be for me even if I could make it, as I don't want to commit to that and am not competitive in the fast cars anyway. Same reason I'm racing Latemodels on the oval side this season. I was planning to skip those but a half-hearted attempt in the truck last season teached me that I'm not ready for it. The Latemodel I can handle and with my current iRating in ovals I could even be somewhat competitive. I'll see how it goes and maybe next season I'm ready to move up. But I'm in no hurry.

I'm really starting to enjoy iRacing even more now that I'm not trying to grind my way up to somewhere.

Quote from SamH :Far too glib, IMO. That's the problem.. it doesn't necessarily take two. Sometimes it takes one idiot and one victim. A system that doesn't differentiate between two people dancing a tango and one person with his arms flailing, striking another, is deficient.

Sure it's deficient, but it's much better than nothing. Plus, there's the possibility to protest drivers who are reckless and/or driving stupidly. Unfortunately, it seems to be greatly underused, because people prefer to come to the forums and bitch and moan about being taken out. I have a feeling, however, that a large percentage of those people are the ones who fail to see any fault in their own driving.

Quote from atledreier :I am always near the back of the pack, and somehow always avoid the 'carnage' you guys talk about... I wonder how some guys get all the bad luck and always get taken out by others by no fault of their own...

Takes two to tango, and it takes two to have a collision...

Overall I agree with you. Many people are just incapable of realizing that in most accidents there was at least a little something they could have done to avoid it or minimize it's impact.

However, there are definitely places in a race where you're more prone to get tangled up in other people's mishaps. That would be the midfield. I've found that, when I start pretty far in the back, I'm usually able to stay out of most trouble, dodge the wrecks in front of me and end up with at least top half finishes more often than not (depends on the strength of field, of course, but even higher rated drivers do seem to go off by themselves quite frequently). If you start in the front, well it's obvious, as long as you don't mess it up into T1 you should do fine.

The midfield is a lot more complicated. Trying to avoid wrecks in front of you without people behind you driving into you, is impossible at times. In my skippy season (that was 2008 4, I believe), probably more than half my incidents came from people rear-ending me on lap 1. That said, I was still able to maintain around 2.5 incidents per race, which is not great, but decent for a midpacker, as I'd like to think.

Last season, where I drove the Mazda and mostly started in the back, I averaged 1.3 incidents per race (without Milwaukee that figure would have been below 1).

Quote from DaveWS :Thanks for the suggestions regarding my stuttering issue guys. FTR I currently have v-sync off (I hate steering lag more than anything else in a sim) at have had the fps capped to 85 fps, which is perfect for testing / qualifying sessions.

I'll have to try the sound thing after the Easter break when I get back to my rig.

Before you do that, simply try lowering the gfx memory slider in-sim if you haven't already done so. That helped me (and many other people) to get rid of stutters. The default setting is too high for some of the tracks. 400-410 seems to be a good value on a 512MB card f.e.

And the skippy is pure awesomeness!

(I haven't driven it in a while, though, because I don't have enough time to commit to more than one series.)

Quote from J.B. :Ok, I've found the answer for this. His comments were made before the FIA decision was released. In fact McLaren haven't reacted in any way since the FIA release...

So it looks like there's only two possibilities. Either they have to admit to lying or they need to pursue legal action. Or they can of course refuse to comment at all.

That's possible, maybe the decision had not been released in it's full wording when Whitmarsh was interviewed on the BBC. If so, that would of course explain why the FiA is so open and direct about it and providing the radio comm etc. From their view, this statement by Whitmarsh makes the decision look overly harsh. Who knows, maybe the FiA wouldn't have had released it in the way they did if Whitmarsh had just said "no comment" -- which would have been the smart thing to do.

Quote from Commander :Alonso was most successful in the last part of the season, in a worse car! And nobody talked about him for some strange reason.

Apart from the very top of the field, RTL always only talks about the German element in F1. Be it the drivers, the car manufacturers or even the engines. They also have a habit of talking to every single german driver after the race or the retirement. I'm sure even the least successful of them, Adrian Sutil, had more airtime last season than any other non-german in F1.

Personally, it annoys me no-end. I don't care whether Sutil was a promising pianist until the age of 14, I think he's a bore to listen to. I would have much rather had RTL interview DC f.e.

But I'm sure if you watched F1 on spanish television last season f.e., you would have heard a lot about and from Alonso.

Funny to see that almost 40% were most impressed by Button. I mean, I really like that guy (unlike Hamilton) and wish him all the best, but driving away from pole to an unassailed victory in the fastest car is really not all that impressive to me. It was a solid drive, not more. (I seem to remember saying the exact same thing about Hamilton after one of his wins in 2008... Can't remember which race it was, though.)

Hamilton on the other hand clearly overperformed. Partly due to luck, partly due to good strategy and partly because he kept his cool and the car out of trouble. He definitely had a harder time than Button and made the best out of what he had. I wouldn't exactly call that "impressive", but many other drivers out there apparantly weren't capable of pulling that off.

Personally, I was most impressed by Buemi, because, like others, I expected more of a Piquet style race from him. Plus, ist was his first race, he's only 20 and all that. So, definitely Buemi impressed me the most.

Quote from SamH :I seriously doubt any racing driver deserving of the title "racing driver" will be taught anything new by iRacing, about adjustments that they can make to their real-life equivalent racing car. They'd have to be at an extraordinarily early stage in their racing careers for that to actually happen. I realise that iRacing wants to give the impression that a sim can be a real-life substitute for the real thing, but I'm afraid I just don't see it. No question, both iRacing and LFS can provide massive insight into the effects of car setup, to lay people and people who are starting out.. but not really beyond that.

I agree. To really be a helpful training tool as far as setting up a car goes, setups would have to be more or less transferable from the sim to real life, but apparantly that's not the case with iRacing (I can't judge for myself, I'm just going by hearsay). Luckily, I don't have to worry about that, as I'm not a racing driver, so all that's important to me is how the sim feels.

I just hope that the training tool marketing scheme is close enough to reality to not blow up in their face one day. That would hurt their credibility.

Btw, wasn't there some talk about Kaemmer working on "new" tyre physics? Where did I read that?

Quote from richard dk :It should be half of your car... Have you watched the replay?

The few times i got x1 Inc for beeing on the grass, it has been half of my car. I also thinks it written somewhere at iRacing forum.

It's definitely the centre line of your car over the edge of the racing surface (or raceable surface to be more precise). Every single time I thought the system had done me wrong and I looked at the replay afterwards, I had to admit that the 1x was in fact deserved.

Quote from UncleBenny :I bought the Impala and Silverado last weekend and I think they are horrible to drive. They just keep snapping around on me with no warning whatsoever, I'm not exactly new to oval racing either. Is it just because I'm using the default iRacing setups or something? I was thinking about going for a year subscription after my one month is up, but these two cars really turned me off to the game, they feel terrible to me.

I don't know the Impala, but apparantly it's a bitch to drive in real life. Most drivers complain that it's just completely different to anything else they know.

The Silverado I'm finding really quite fun to drive on the bigger ovals like Lowe's f.e. which is on the schedule currently. I have, however, not used one of the default setups on the intended track. Last time around at Lowe's the setups for Las Vegas and Texas worked pretty well. This time I'm using the one posted by Brandan on the forums and it's really nice to drive, imho. I found that you have to be very gentle with steering inputs, but once used to it, it's actually possible to catch it in time if it steps out on you (most of the time anyway). I wouldn't describe it as "snapping" at all, though. It feels rather gradually to me, but it's still easy to mess up when you try to correct it.

What tracks did you try them on? Just asking, because I couldn't really get to grips with the truck when I tested it at Milwaukee. I'd assume that it would be similar on other short tracks. It's just very hard to run safe but fast there it seems. I assumed that it was just my lack of talent, though.

Quote from The Moose :you don't need iRacing telling you off for it just to rub it in. All the SR stuff could easily be reported to you when the session is over.

That's a matter of preference, though. I for one like iRacing to tell me my incidents while I'm racing. I think it actually serves more of an educational purpose to do it that way, because you can immediately react to it and adjust your driving. That's especially important for Ovals, imho, with the possibility of bump-drafting etc. But it's also helpful in RCs to immediately know whether a contact was still acceptable and you don't have to worry about it or too hard so that you should back off a little more.

Of course, this only works well if the system is not moody but consistent in the way it dishes out incidents. Sadly, this doesn't always seem to be the case, although, again, I never really had a problem with it.

Quote from bbman :Just to be clear, I got a 0x (and it shows only the one incident I had after in the results), this was just the damage I took from this slightest of bumps...

Another example: Being frustrated with crashing while testing, I positioned my "Slowstice" () against a wall and let it rip... The car wiggled a bit, resulting in getting more damage on both front corners! WTF?!

Yeah, unfortunately, that's also part of the sometimes erratic behaviour, that a 0x can give you a heavily damaged car, while you sometimes can get a 4x and merrily drive on.

But those are generally rare occurences in my experience. For the most part the racing has been unobstructed by it for me. But, yes, it would be nice if incident count and car damage would be somewhat congruent at least.

Quote from bbman :... I had maybe 1-2 km/h difference in speed when my front left side touched his rear, yet my suspension was so out of shape I got understeer in left-hand corners and oversteer in right-hand corners... Plus my bonnet was bent so far up the nearest ground I could see was 30 metres away...

But yeah, I hate tip-toeing around people just to not take a dive in SR, it takes out so much of the immersion... :banghead:

It seems a little erratic at times. Sometimes you can rub tyres in the Mazda quite heavily and only get a 0x (has happened to me twice in Mazda practice at Milwaukee), and at other times you get a 4x when you didn't even touch according to the replay. But overall collision detection has been relatively good for me, I must say. And as long as you keep an extra margin of safety, you should be good in 95% of the cases, I'd say.

For me personally, SR actually adds to the immersion, because the fear of crashing and being "hurt" is a little more real that way.

Quote from Timdpr :4chan is claiming the post, and was on tv apparently.

The post on 4chan was never considered to be genuine. At least not by german media. The post on krautchan on the other hand was presented as genuine and read out loud by the secretary of the interior of the german state Baden-Württemberg in an official press conference. That seems to have been a serious mess-up. Apparantly the message on krautchan was a fake and police didn't check it properly. It might still turn out that it was genuine, but I doubt it. Very embarassing for police, prosecution and the secretary of the interior. Media fell victim to it, but I can't blame them. If you can't trust the only official source on a certain subject to get their facts straight before presenting it to the entire public, you're lost really.

Quote from TiJay :Apparently he posted a message on an "Internet chat room" before going on the rampage... Any idea which one, just out of curiosity?

This one: www.krautchan.net

They're claiming that it was a fake, but I wouldn't be so sure, as of now. Police seem to be quite certain that it's real, and the fact that it was supposedly a father of a guy who saw the post last night and didn't take it seriously informed the police suggests that it might in fact not be a fake.

But who knows, with all that contradictory information flying around, it's hard to tell what's true and what's not.

The skippy is defintely great. It's easier to drive fast than the Mazda but probably the hardest car in iRacing to drive slowly. The Mazda on the other hand is easy at 7 to 8/10ths but takes a little getting used to to find the limit. Took me a lot of practice till I started to really like it. It felt sort of dead at first, but once you figure out that the limit on that car is way beyond where you initially expected it to be it really starts to come alive.

That said, I still consider myself a noob in the Mazda and am not nearly as competitive as I was in the skippy, where I could get within 102% of the fastest times on most tracks. In the Mazda I'm struggling to get into the 104% range (although I'm telling myself that that's partly due to lack of practice).

Overall I think I still like the skippy most, but I haven't driven it since last season. Real life has not even let me participate in the Mazda series properly and there's definitely no time for a second series currently.

Quote from mrodgers :Spiderman - correct
Dracula - correct
Jeff Gordon - wrong (it guessed Mike Modano, center for Dallas Stars, NHL)
Sydney Crosby - correct

Hehe, it guessed Jeff Gordon for me, but I thought of Dale Earnhardt Jr., so I win.

It guessed Boris Becker right, but I just picked him over Michael Stich to make it easy.

So, in conclusion: As long as you think of the most obvious character in a certain field, it will probably guess somewhat correct. Which is good enough for the simple-minded who can't come up with anything not obvious anyways.

btw: On a third game it guessed some apparantly czech guy who I have never heard of. Which is not too far off considering that I forgot whom I actually thought of that time.

Quote from The Very End :Firstly, where the feck is the menu button? Esc, F keys or anything, when I have started racing there is no way to get back to option screen or something.

You can't get into the menu while on track. You have to stop the car and press and hold Esc.

Quote :Secondly, how to I change camera? The cockpit veiw just isn't my thing (don't worry, not planning to use chase veiw, roofcam was in my mind).

Cockpit view is the only view available.

Quote :Thirdly (any word named that by the way?) my trottle inside the game is weird. It automatically gives full trottle, and the way to solve this is to press the trottle lol, everything is reversed, the turning aswell. Any suggestions?

I don't know, but I guess there should be an option somewhere to reverse the axes. Either within iRacing or in your profiler/driver software.

Quote from Crommi :I'm not even in top100 anymore for road ratings

You still have plenty of a cushion at 3639, though. Not too long ago even I was in the top 250 for RC-iRating with my measly 2400. Currently the cut-off for the top 250 (based on iRating alone and not factoring in SR) is a little over 2900 for both road and oval. I'd expect the bar to be raised a little till august, but +3500 should still be good enough I reckon.
