Quote from hyntty :...I'll give a simple example: Windows makes some tasks that should be trivial very tedious. Let's say you want to copy a file from a computer to another inside a local network. Not an impossible task to complete but surely difficult as many people would opt to transfer the file in a non-intuitive way such as email, usb-memory, dropbox... This would be the average Windows user. The average Linux user would take about three seconds to use scp, a program included in the operating system to transfer files over the network.

Interesting stereotype of 'average windows user' vs 'average Linux user'.
I use windows, and I can transfer files across my lan in a few seconds with no trouble. I don't use dropbox or email for this, just windows key + E to bring up a couple of windows explorer instances and click on the relevant network locations to open them, then drag using the appropriate control key for copy or move... Simple stuff.

My experience with Linux is that unless you are a network admin or similar, it is more trouble than it's worth. For home users, windows wins hands down. Even when I go through a period of nerdiness and work on a project where I need Linux style flexibility, I end up using Cygwin.

Linux wins when the time you can save due to it's power and flexibility is more than the time you lose to hours of setup problems, and trawling through readme files and help switches trying to find the correct syntax for some obscure command line tool - you need to be fluent in stuff like Regex and emacs to get full advantage. Anyone who doesn't need to use custom scripts multiple times a day is using Linux for geek cred or because of some socio-political or ethical opinions they hold.

pah - 2003 is like yesterday - some of us remember when there was only demo, and the forum was on Race Sim Central. Them days we were glad to have three cars with no skins and black windows, and one track. The trees swayed around like it was cartoon network... darn kids these days... don't know when they got it good...

Awesome update. Enjoying the MRT5 around the kart circuits!.

@Scawen have you secretly been working on the AI? they seem to be less A and more I than I remember. I was driving Turbo on Westhill National, and the AI were adding to the experience rather than ruining it !

Quote from chanoman315 :Can't we just put LFS on kickstarter and gather a lot of funds to buy licenses for tracks and cars?

Of course, because once we raise all that money, we can tell the money "HEY MONEY! GO BUILD SOME **** TRACKS".

Oh wait... it doesn't work like that. Money doesn't do anything. People do things.

Funny

But remember people do things ( for the money ) Wink

People do things for other reasons as well. LFS was done for other reasons. I think partly to escape from people who do things 'for the money'!
If LFS had been done 'for the money' it would be long forgotten by now.

Quote from ToxicKlay :..the other talking heads in this thread only seem to complain about people complaining...

The implication of this is that you can complain as much as you like about whatever, but nobody should ever disagree with you?

Seems to me that dickheads like you are all about attacking people who you know won't fight back. Developers can't get into battles with trolls like you because it's a no win situation for them, and you know it.

Why don't you do something worthwhile?

Quote from R3DMAN :you know what the biggest barrier i faced when trying to get people to play LFS... no real cars/tracks, not graphics, sounds etc etc it was purely cars and tracks..

So they really want to _pretend_ they are driving some real world car on some real world track. Which means that maybe LFS is not the game for them.

LFS is a racing simulation, not a role playing game. It's about real sim racing, not pretend real world racing.
There is a huge market for racing/driving RPGs, and competition is fierce, if LFS tried to go that way, it would be dead in the water. The demand for racing simulations is much smaller, so big publishers stay out and there is market space for projects like LFS to exist and survive.

What kind of poll is this?
No 'integrated graphics' option?
No windows XP?

What a waste of time.
If you are trying to find if LFS needs intensive optimization, then you have to put poll options in that would need it!

.......

Like if you were trying to find out how many gingers were on the forum, so your poll options are:

Dark hair
Blond hair
Brown hair
Curly hair.

conclusion: no Gingers! Face -> palm

Quote from Racer X NZ :Luv it........

Who raised this ? Scrawn ...........

Scawen has been having a problem primarily with administrative incompetence. That's something that can happen in any country - even New Zealand .
All the aggressive anti European anti UK tub thumping was started by you.
Quote :
Who gives a phuq about the UKs previous history ?

You, I suppose, or you wouldn't be going on about it so much.
Quote :
Your no longer a country, rather a sad note on a Wikipedia entry, oh , yes, the UK used to be a major world power, now they are a minor part of Europe.

Yes, the UK has fallen down the global economy rankings, only managing about 9th place depending on which chart you read. New Zealand are showing the UK government the way... from an extremely impressive 68th position in the table. How embarrassing. btw, who is your current monarch?

I'm not sure that a move towards using NZ as a tax avoidance scheme would be wise for LFS or anyone else, there are better options nearer to home for those with an unethical inclination.

Quote from Racer X NZ :
We can set up a shell LFS company here cheaply !

People who cheat the tax system by exploiting loopholes like the one you are suggesting are parasites. Not only do they avoid paying a fair share of the cost of maintaining the infrastructure that supports them, they also provide politicians with excuses to implement ever more restrictive and punitive laws. The new tax rules that are giving Scawen a headache are case in point - they would never have happened if there weren't so many tax avoiding leaches stealing from us in the first place.

Quote from Scawen :It is possible that, on reading my previous post, you cannot believe that HMRC is so stupid, but it's really true. If you want to know more about problems caused by the new EU VAT rules for digital services, please have a look on Google:

Fire off a letter to your MP and one to your MEP. At least then you are talking to someone who has some small amount of real leverage!

Quote from edge3147 :This was to be expected. Both issues, taxes go up and lfs is slow to develop. Sad day.

hmm, it's not about taxes going up - read Scawens post again.

Unfortunately, the current EU tax regs cause an unfair trading environment because businesses based in EU countries with higher local VAT rates can't compete fairly with those in lower VAT states. I guess that the new rules are intended to prevent those problems... I imagine that a whole lot of other unforeseen issues will be caused, and it doesn't half complicate things for smaller businesses like LFS.

Definitely not 'to be expected' though.

If you are going to troll, don't contradict yourself so completely - it makes you seem like a fool.
Clearly if a game has a 'present community', then by definition it is not 'dead' - whatever the devs are doing!

So if LFS isn't dead...

I don't think it's necessary to post a subjective opinion on the mortal status of LFS, the fact that you and I are posting here on this thread proves that LFS is not dead. Doesn't take much of an intellect to work that out.

As far as health goes, I think things are very positive. Scawen has found some motivation, there is new content in the pipeline, I'm looking forward to the next update.

If you don't feel like you can be part of the community and 'life' of LFS, then maybe it is you who is dead 'inside'! - the endless negativity of trolling will do that to a person. Sucks to be you.

Hamilton won more then double the number of races, but you think the reason he's champion is Rosberg's loss of self control? Eh? What?
The only reason Rosberg was anywhere near Hamilton was because of Hamilton's terrible luck.

Quote from " :You think this is unique to Apple?

No
Quote :
Because it's software.

Good point. Microsoft have a much harder job, their product must work on a very wide range of hardware. Apple on the other hand build the software and the hardware it runs on. So not only do they have a much easier task in terms of developing and maintaining stability, when things do go wrong, they don't have to play corporate twister with some other multi-national. They can fix everything in house. So they really don't have any excuses.
Quote :
Do you consider ASUS a good company?

Not particularly, but their products are not marketed with premium status and price point, so I wouldn't expect the same standards of them.
Quote :
It's absolutely laughable you're using Apple as an example of forcing users to upgrade.

Most of Apples products are copied from other peoples ideas. They just take the ideas to new heights. Similarly, forced obsolescence is not new, but Apple have taken it further than other companies believed users would accept. Now they are all jumping on the gravy train - Microsoft included. Thanks Apple.

Sorry for continuing Off Topic!

Quote from EeekiE :
Been here for over 10 years now and it's COMMON. A new apprentice from college started a few months ago, and has the exact same attitude. Any kind of news story on Apple, and the office just won't shut up. There may be millions of clueless Apple cultists, but in my experience, they are dwarfed by people that get really emotional and heated in the opposite direction. Even to the point of pretty much shaming paying customers after a bit of support.

Interesting. My experience of owning a MacBook is that everything is fine until there is a problem, then you are shit out of luck. Apple will never acknowledge an issue unless it affects all of the users of a newly released device and is picked up by national news channels. If you try to get help on a forum, all you get are apple evangelists who refuse to believe that an apple product could have a fault - unless Apple admit the fault, which rarely happens, see above.
The MacBook I had was faulty in three ways.
1. There was a design fault that caused cracks to slowly appear in the casing if you carried it around closed. I have seen many of the same model of MacBook, ALL of them have this problem. NONE of the mac lover owners had noticed it! No information or apologies on Apple websites.
2. There is a hardware/driver problem with audio that causes latency to rise slowly over time until the drivers buffer is reset. This is a significant problem for me as I was trying to use the machine for music making. I discovered that a few others had a similar problem (most folks wouldn't notice because they are not using their macs for creative purposes). Apple have never responded to this issue. Forum response ranged from 'there is no problem' to, 'it's your fault for not buying a MacBook pro'. Not a single acknowledgement that there is a problem. No attempt at helping to find a solution.
3. There is a fault with the motherboard/processor design that causes the machine to make high pitched noises/humming sounds. This problem was acknowledged by apple because it caused so many complaints, but they denied that it was a 'fault' and refused to do anything about it.

My experience with windows is quite different. Any time I have a problem - which is rare these days - Microsoft will have multiple possible work-arounds posted on their website, and if I try user forums, I will get helpful responses rather than evangelistic denial.

Yet they all seem to hold Linux in some godly position, despite being even more ignorant of it. Maybe it's because any customer hardcore enough to run Linux, wouldn't need to call them for help.

Part of the reason Linux is put on a pedestal is because there is no huge corporation making unrealistic claims, denying faults and forcing users to upgrade their hardware with an extremely aggressive and unethical program of forced obsolescence.

If I were running an IT support business, I would hate Apple purely because of the rate at which they force their users to upgrade. This would make my business less profitable because I would have to spend so much money re-training my staff. I would also hate being given computers to fix that had real problems that were flatly denied by the manufacturer and the online user community.

Quote from Trackso :There are 3 servers with a rally map and only one has people on it and it is a "pro" crash server.

Some people filter out empty servers.
If you want to race rally, join an empty server and do some practicing. Then the server will show up as not empty, and there is a better chance people will join. If you are lucky and 2 or 3 people join, then that will attract others... Sometimes this works, sometimes not.

FWIW, you are much better off with S2 instead of demo.
