Thanks for explaining but I still don't understand, what prevents someone from creating a different master server? There are cracked servers for Counter Strike, craked servers for Battlefield and cracked servers for XY other games and those games aren't even open-source.
If I had the coding skill and LFS source-code, why shouldn't I create a rip-off game with my own master server that wouldn't require any licences, it would just maintain a lobby for races to meet and start races (simply a server browser). The game server is in the game already so the source-code for that would be accessible.
Remember what happened with the Half-life 2 leaked code? It wasn't even a finished version and some russian guys managed to make it into a playable game (although I haven't tried myself so don't quote me on the playability aspect).
1) In the spirit of answering each other's question with another question, let me ask you this: Why are there so many opern-source Linux distributions? And another question: If Microsoft released the Windows 7 source-code, do you think everyone would still rather pay a lot for the "oroginal" if they could have the same (or maybe even improved) version of the OS? I know it's not LFS but the principle remains the same.
2) I think that you are missing my point so let me explain. What I meant previously was that if the devs released the source-code, what stops somebody else from plagiarizing (is that the correct word?) it and creating a clone, that would be free for all? The LFS license sales will probably drop.
1) What makes you think that? I think that you are being a little naive here.
2) Give me the LFS source-code and I'll show you how I can tamper with the code...and I am no David Copperfield either.
This idea might work in Utopia. What you are saying is: "Why do you use security doors on your houses when you can just have curtains? It would make your life easier. It's not like if somebody came for a visit when you're on vacation."
Make LFS open-source and in one week you will have a s..tload of LFS clones for free download.
Both comps must be on the same workgroup. Rightclick on My computer > Properties > Computer name and there click on a button Change (the only button there iirc). I'm using slovak XP so I'm not sure about the translation but you should be able to find it.
Browse the LAN through My network places > Network Computers (or something like that)
That's a good one. I checked the slovak part and found some swears that I have never heard of and some of them haven't been used for at least 500 years
I did my very best to write in a polite manner
And I'm not foulmouthing anyone. I was just interested in other languages. There are profanities in Oxford dictionary too.
Post your favorite profanities from your language translated literally (word by word) in English.
Slovak is my language and some of the most widely used are:
Go to ass or go to c..t (means f..k off)
It's in the ass/c..t (means it's f..ked up)
It's for sh.t (means it's no good)
You d..k/c..t (means basically the same in English)
Then there are many combinations since Slovak uses various prefixes and postfixes. Cursing in Slovak can sometimes be quite creative
If S3 comes out and costs 36 pounds (or 12 from S2), then I suspect that most of today's S2 owners (me included) will upgrade to S3. Because of this, the current S2 will be as much populated as S1. As a result of this, not that many newcomers will be willing to pay the full S3 price and neither will they want to pay for S1 or S2 where nothing will happen. The number of any LFS licences sold will not grow as fast as it does now.
I think that balancing the cars so that they behave the same way and achieve similar lap times on every LFS track is pointless and also impossible. If you'd try it, you'd end up with a bunch of identical cars. There should be cars (in one class) that are somewhat specific and each has it's "favorite" environment. This could be quite interesting in leagues and tournaments where tracks change, but where you have to stick to one car.
In one-off pickup races, everyone would probably pick the same car (which is obviously the fastest for the current track). Whether this is good or bad is very subjective and I don't want to get involved in this debate, I don't have a clear opinion about this anyway.
I have a short thread somewhere where I was looking for a combination of two different cars with similar laptimes, to induce many overtaking situations in one lap (FZ5 vs. restricted FBM on Aston Historic Rev). I found a good combination, but on a different track it didn't work and I had to play with the restrictions again. My conclusion? You cannot have many different cars that are mutually competitive on different tracks.
To sum it up, I have no idea why I am writing this, probably just too much time on my hands today Good thread anyway
