It has always been an arcade game...it will always be an arcade game...the casual gamer doesn't really care about physics or super realism..all they want to do is drive their shiny car real fast and cause havoc in a imaginary world...
So why do a bunch of the trolls here loathe NFS so much...I never understood the reasoning behind any of the hate...
If you don't like it, don't play it...if NFS wasn't successful at doing something I don't think it would still be around after ~14 years...it sells, it is super popular and there isn't anything wrong with it...it's just a casual arcade racer that lets you and your ricer friends give your honda civic a neon enema...
It makes perfect sense why people want to have NFS type features in LFS...they are the ones who love racing, love realism but still lack knowledge about a lot of elements of auto racing/performance...I can understand why people want to be able to buy a "stage 2" (just saying 'stage' anything makes me wince, get educated) turbo and slap it on the XRT...because even though I am against it, I can see where and why it would be fun...
I wish the devs would comment on one of these recent threads...at least give some insight on something...even if it was brutally honest regarding how they feel about everyone's 'moaning' recently...i just wonder what their thoughts, ideas and agenda is at this point
I think that's the general consensus on the forum...heh...especially recently...
Do I think LFS will 'stay on top', no
At one point did I think it would, yes
I think a lot of my change of thought has to be related to the speed of development and how it has slowly decelerated to a crawl (at least publicly [what we, the community, sees]). Right now, at this rate, there is no way they could stay ahead of the game...
As Electrik Kar mentioned, laser scanned tracks would be awesome, and someone is willing to help but it seems the devs are very selective and hesitant to recruit help...that 'hireing strategy' could really make or break LFS in my opinion...but again, it is their game and I know they have some kind of vision of what it will become but a lot of us, including myself, seem to be having a difficult time having the same vision as of recent...
Did you read what the mouse users who replied to this post said about the difficulties of using the mouse...or did you just read the first post and reply?
There are a few who are talking about removing the mouse...and then there are some who are stating that the mouse isn't fair...
I tried driving with the mouse last night and couldn't do it very well....it was pretty difficult to complete a full lap and carry a decent speed because you have no feedback at all or variable inputs other than steering...I'm sure after some practice I would get better but like with anything, practice makes 'perfect'....I can pick up a wheel and drive way better than I can with a mouse with way less practice because it is more 'natural'...
Edit,
Thank you! I agree that this is a 'moot' point and that most of the discussion in, on, around and on top of LFS is very redundant...probably due to the fact that there's been no new stuff for people to complain and nitpick about...heh
You're an idiot...not everyone can afford a wheel...I'm sure a lot of people, including myself, find that if they really wanted to they could purchase a wheel but have far more important things to do like pay off dept or pay bills. Anyone in their right mind would pick being financially responsible over spending some wad of cash on a game controller...
I guess Microsoft should remove mouse and keyboard support from MS Flight Simulator too.
After reading most of the posts here I have found that this thread is just full of 'stupid' and ignorance and a lot of other adjectives.
Exactly...so...the point of this thread was?
There might as well be a ban on game-pads with analog sticks too...since that's what I use because my wheel is broken and I have better things to spend money on than a new wheel right now...I get all the benefits of a mouses quick lock to lock with a variable break and gas...did I mention it is boat loads harder to play even though I have a 'huge advantage"?
I think that's a great idea for the devs to truncate a large chunk of the community that uses alternative control devices other than a wheel. I think they should also add a hardware check so that if you don't have at least a quad core CPU you are unable to play LFS. It just makes sense, doesn't it?
I'm not going to spend hours digging though 2 forums to find 1 image...I just remember it was during the time that the first sneak peeks of the open wheeled cars were released by the LFS team. I'm not asking you to believe me...I just remember what I saw and what I read...
no, I'm pretty sure that the image was hosted @ lfs.net. I wouldn't of brought it up if I was unsure about it...I remember there being a pretty lengthy thread about it too...do yourself a favor and stop being so smug about everything...
No, in fact I would be pretty pissed...because there are still a lot of features and content that has been talked about, some of which have even been seen in screenshots, and we have yet to see first hand...complete to me means the game includes all the features and content that has been talked about by the devs...I/we was/were not promised anything but we have been shown and told about 'things to come' for quite some time...
AndroidXP, I'm not smoking anything...they were in one of those 'easter egg' screen shots. I know I am not the only one who remembers it...it wasn't blatantly obvious but it was there in the background of the pic...if I remember correctly a wing had come off of an open wheeled car...
I guess my use of the word 'promised' was more of a 'this has been talked about a lot by the devs and they said it would be part of SX'...when you say stuff like that you kind of raise the bar and expectations of the community and when you see no result it is frustrating....
I think this is one of the first times I have actually agreed with some of Ian's points.
Before I state my view...don't get me wrong...I love LFS...I tell everyone I run into that seems remotely interested in racing sims. Hell, I even got my boss to purchase a license for each one of his kids (5 licenses).
I wrote a big long thing stating my view and quoting other's posts but didn't feel the need to post all of it because after 'proof-reading' it I found it was nothing more than me venting my frustration about the speed of development. So here's what I think it comes down to...
Those who are complaining about certain things have been around a lot longer than those who don't see the problem. Those who have been around a long time and say there is nothing wrong with it are either super fanboys or just too dense to see what the problem is. When we purchased S2 we were aware that it was work in progress, but we didn't know development would slow to a crawl. LFS is 4+ years into development and there have been improvements and advancements but not as many as a lot of us thought there would be.
As hard as it is to say...I am slowly loosing interest in LFS due to its development speed. We have been promised things and are constantly told that new things will be added, bugs will be fixed and more features will pop up...when? I'm happy with the test patches and am in no way ungrateful for the work that has been done and continues to be done but it is just taking do long to get from point 'a' to point 'b'.
LFS has turned into a huge (excuse the lack of a better expression) cock tease. We have seen screen shots with detachable body parts but that was 2+ years ago...we have seen and heard about lots of things but have yet to actually see them first hand. That's great if they are not ready for a stable release but for the sake of fairness why not release an unstable open beta so we can actually see some progress?
I'm almost torn between 2 views...I understand why LFS development is slow and respect the dev team but at the same time I paid for a product that I thought would of been complete some time ago...
While I agree that laser scanned tracks would be an awesome edition I feel that the 'core' of LFS needs to be finished and perfected before such additions. Once the physics and graphical parts of the engine are finished then there would be room to concentrate on other stuff...and watching the way the test patches are going that looks like what is happening. More features and a more complete game come before tracks and cars, imo.
It doesn't really matter what we think because we don't know all that much about what is going on behind the scenes. The team is going to do it there way regardless of what we think. That's one of the quirks that makes LFS fun, we never know what is around the next corner or what will be included in the next patch. Everything that happens with this game is a surprise...we just get little hints that are buried in posts along the way...
Who is 'we'? Are you part of the development team? The more I frequent the forums the more I find people acting like LFS is theirs and like they have some say in the development process...I think that's why I took a break...
Same here...LFS to me is just something I play to relax...no killing people, no blowing stuff up or completely dominating the enemy...I usually just hot lap by myself and mess around off-line (hence my low miles on LFSWorld)...
I play other games but there's always room for LFS and it never gets 'boring', if i over do it I'll just loose interest for a while but I always come back to it...
There have been other threads about it's slow development...watching LFS for this long really does make you want more...I kind of wish the development was moving a wee bit faster...but who knows, they may have something big planned that we don't know about...at least that's what I keep telling myself, heh...
Since...I don't remember the specific release when I started to play but it was way before S1 was released...way before LFS had the following it does now...back when LFS had a simple website black with a few screen shots and a link to the ZIP file...back before the 'new' logo existed...so since 2000-2001?
Edit: Now that I think about it...the first system I played it on was my Shuttle AK31A Rev. 3, Athlon T-Bird 1GHz, 512MB RAM, ATi Radeon 8500LELE...so that was back in Mid-2000? I guess the bottom line is I am a hardcore LFS fan who doesn't post on the forums very often. I probably still have an account on RSC and I know I still have my +v in the IRC channel
I love the LX6 and really want an LX8 but recently I started to drive the FZ5 and found it a blast...I still love the LX6 though...and still really want an LX8, hehe!
I don't have an anti-virus...they don't work, they just tell you there is a problem that you probably already know about then then direct you to a website that tells you how to resolve the issue manually...the auto-fix features never totally remove the infection unless it is a real simple harmless trojan or some other lame virus.
Like said above in prior posts, the best anti-virus is common sense...I have only had 1 virus and that was blatantly my fault, but i was able to detect and remove it without an anti-virus...
I wasn't blaming anyone. I was just stating why UAC was implemented. I know it is ridiculous. I'm a computer tech and most of my clients only gripe about Vista is the annoying UAC prompts. They are pretty easy to disable so its not that big of a deal.
One thing I hope is that Microsoft can come up with a better solution for Windows 7. Vista is a great foundation for something much better so we can only look ahead and see what they have to offer next
This is my first time posting in the test forum...I download every test patch that comes out and always eagerly await new releases but I never run into any issues or find any bugs so I don't feel the need to post here, haha
I know you're a busy guy so I'll just quote the jist of the article.
UAC is just there to help you protect you and also help software developers (you) produce more secure software for your users. I'm not saying please change LFS to adapt to these new found standards, I'm just showing you why they were implemented if you didn't already know. I haven't had any issues on Vista so far, LFS runs like a champ
Anyways, I look forward to the next patch! You guys are doing an awesome job!
Why does everyone want a better demo? I still don't see what is wrong with the current one...it already gives WAY more content and flexibility over any other game I can think of. This is the only game where I have seen people complain and bitch about a demo.
If you ask me, the current demo does a pretty good job of doing the above. It just bugs to see a lot of people wanting something for nothing...
You get 3 cars, unlimited online/offline play, 1 track for free...that's plenty of content for a demo...that's plenty of content for anyone to get a feel of the game and understand what LFS is about...hell, us veteran LFS'ers who have been here since day 1 (pre-S1) had that for quite some time and never complained about it...
I think everyone gets bothered by it because there's no point to even ask for more...people need to understand that it isn't 'their' game, it belongs to the devs and they are kind enough to share it with us. They have their own agenda and plans. If they take some of the suggestions and community input along the way, fine, but that is their choice. those wanting more content in a free demo are pretty ungrateful...just buy the game and support the 3 guys who have done a pretty awesome job as the small team they are...
