Quote from nutty boy :I dont even know what it's for. I thought people said they used it for recording sound.

if you need to record sound maybe you'd better use Audacity (http://audacity.sf.net) wich is open source too.
Virtualdub as also nandub are use for video encoding/conversion or even for cam recording, nandub especially is also very suitable for lossless videocutting/merging they have also some basic filters to apply to the video streams.

hope it helps

Becky, i've to say i'm quite surprised because i only race on public servers and never happened to me to be treated this way...i do not hide i'm girl, but most people don't even believe me, so i tell them "then think of me as a man... " maybe it's a "karma thing" if you get "angry" easily etc. morons may choose you as their target just because they think they can hurt you.

back in the demo days only one guy asked me a photo, i think mainly because he didn't believe i am a girl...he insisted for two days, after then he never said "hi" when met me, it just ended...nowadays may happen that someone joke around on the fact that i'm a girl, but i play the joke too, so it's just some fun, if i would have got angry for each joke i think i would have ended in your situation, if i want to race i only reply with smileys, if they are not guys that just want to be kidding, be sure that the majority of people at server will be on your side...but if you are the kind of person that get andry easily and reply with insults, be sure that people will kick you instead of the moron...

another thing: the more you get practise and get faster, the more you get respected by everyone (and not only by clever people who respect regardless of skills...), this will help you as the time goes by, BUT the most helpful hint i can give you is "smile and wave...just smile and wave" <- the best thing i've read on this forum...ever

PS i always wanted to ask you one thing: what's your age/sex/location

i think that if lfs will support mods natively (with the multi-folder idea like previously proposed, will be very easy to implement),it will make easier for devs to concentrate to the most important things as community will focus on more marginal things, i.e. the ghost-car mod, the snow-mod, the hi-res textures mods...in the latter case i also corrected few bugs on the forthcoming aston textures.
i'd to say that writing an external app to do all this (with seamless integration with lfs) it's an easy task and i thought to do it for myself...but if you await for me to do it in my spare time...well you'd better await for S3 ...

i also want to add that if phisics parameters may be moddable ONLY for offline usage, imagine what could be with things like the snow mod or a rainy mod...

Quote from filur :Uncompressed avi equals lossless quality without stitching 14,000 BMP's together.

and more important, an uncompressed avi with Avisinth can be transparently redirected on the fly to whatever codec app you may need, es. virtualdub, nandub, premiere, xvid, divx, x264, vp6, etc.

Quote from wheel4hummer :But, aren't half of the dds files just temporary anyway? Like the RALY_umbr.dds, there is one with alpha, but it doesn't work. I tried.

my posted dds are for sure unfinished, btw i'm going to make a final release very soon (even if i'm not happy with my white lines), unfortunately i lost much time on the aston bug because i thought it was my fault (instead is a bug even on original textures because of unproper mapping), right now i'm setting up a project on sourceforge (already approved) and i need to make things "small" and well organized so that anyone will be able to do whatever he/she wants (under the gpl statements).

expect next week the final aston textures and probably all other tracks as well (except south city), i will release a "bright" version and a dark version for each one.

from that final release i expect many feedbacks so to start working on improved version.

well, to me it could have been easily avoided by using one more poligon to avoid such skew, but btw i searched into this forum and it was not mentioned, so i reported...actually i believe devs already knows it but, who really knows, in all this time i raced on aston i never noticed before...

Quote from Ball Bearing Turbo :Tire noise does so exist in LFS

really? but apart that there isn't a volume slider like "wind volume", i never hear it!
can you explain me how to verify it in game? i cannot hear it

...of course by "tire noise" i intend the rolling noise, not noise caused by bumps etc.

Quote from ayrton senna 87 :honey, u probably dont pass unless its 100% safe to do so, so u dont overtake much but when u do u dont crash!

this thread is aimed at people who attempt to pass but end up clipping the person infronts rear wheel then blaming for 'being turned in on'

so in reality, this thread dont really apply to u m8! u are a safe driver

as i said i never raced with you guys, so my complaints are not really aimed at you, i just want to avoid that a too hard bahaviour finds it's justification.

i'm not as safe as i depict myself, because i do mistakes and i sometimes hit other with my mistakes, i only think i made a good experience on the old demo days on how to avoid banzai-crashers, with such experience i know that if the guy in front is much less skilled, he will not be able to be overtaken properly, in such cases more patience will save me to end the race prematurely Big grin

maybe i got the topic by the wrong side...maybe i'd better wait for such video before complaining more...Big grin

Quote from flyby3d :I do agree with our general idea, but i think this point is where, sometimes, more attention is needed.

When i race with someone i know (or when i race in a League) i can follow VERY close and i'd rarely (if never) crash into someone braking unpredictably early...
...but if i'm in a public server and i find myself behind someone i've never seen racing before, i'll take my time (and space from) to see how he/she drives.
Public server have pilots of all experieces and abilities.
It's simply too dangerous for both to assume that the one i'm following (or overtaking) will take the correct and fastet line or brake at the "normal" braking points...

my 2c

exactly! it's too easy to say "you brake too early, it's your fault!" when it happens to me that someone brakes much early than i expect, i usually change line taking the outside and i avoid crash...that of course means that i lose time, of course i can keep my line, bump him out of the track, don't even say sorry and pass him and be happy...unfortunately, that's to me wrecking and being dirty, a behaviour that deserves black flag, but of course, until lfs will have black flags, people will take advantage of dirty racing Frown

Quote from keiran :No offence but with that sort of attitude you would get no where in real life racing. I know someone when I raced karts who was scared to end up causing an accident that he never pulled off an overtaking move in the whole 3 years I raced with him. I kept telling him to just go for it because if you never show aggression to your fellow racers they'll walk all over you. You show no aggression then the driver in front aint going to yield. One of the reasons that in LFS I make the other driving work to get past me becasue it puts more pressure on them. A lot of racing is about mind games and how you use your race craft to make the other driver slip up.

Personally I've raced Tristan and Will a lot and I very few times has it ended in a big crash. Sure we have our tangles but heck that happens in real life with more at risk. I really enjoy the aggression of racing people like Will hard because thats what it's like in real life. Not what a lot of people do in LFS which is not bother to try hold you back.

If someone's quicker than me I'll defend my position as much as is sporting and as much as the rules allow me to do.

Keiran

and i agree with that, but from all the posts that "justify" being "hard" it just reminds to me of too many fast guys that actually don't know how to race, i'm not telling not to dare or not to "close" the lines,, it happened to me to make a pas at full throttle at the fe green chicane (with mrt), just in the middle of the chicane, but it was safe to do so and not even a little touch! ...but most times i don't do it because 99% it's crash for sure!

saying "everywere is possible to pass" and " i close the line if i know he can break" is to me crash attitude, while the first sentence is right in principle, is also right that a smart guy knows that attempting a pass at certain corners in normal conditions, means crash!

if i pass at the inside and i'm entering corner faster, i will pass! because only a silly or a wrecker (IMO) will close no matter what just because i have still braking room, if i will find a guy with such bully attitude and he close no matter what, i will pass no matter what...that means 100% crash, so will make to let him end badly and me as less as possible, because if i do properly i pretend to pass! it's too easy to justify the silly attitude "i close no matter what" just by claiming to be a "hard to pass driver" to me is just a wrecker...

the lfs wind noise (and not the tire noise that doesn't exist in lfs), it's perfectly realistic: when i drive my car at 200 km/h all i can hear is wind noise...and it's pretty huge! i can't even hear the sound of the stereo at full volume! and of course i have the car windows closed, for those who don't believe, just drive at 120 km/h with opened windows...and listen...

so imagine how it must be at 300 km/h inside a F1 car...

this thread seems like aimed on justifing the crash attitude...

it is true that many people don't know how toovertake and how be overtaken, but is also true that many "fast and famous" racers pretend to have the right to pass you and crash you no matter what...even if they are slower than you, it is quite common to find people like ayrton and tristan that pretend to pass even when they know it's 100% crash, i know very well that kind of attitude, it's the attitude that if they cannot pass me by being faster, they tap me from behind at braking and pretend that i broke too early, or if i pass they tap me the back side making me spin and again of course it's my fault...

to if someone is coming faster than me into a corner and i cannot defend cleanly, i let him pass as i should but while doing it i prepare my corner exit making his as slow as i can but being clean, so that i come out faster, i catch his slipstream and will pass him on next corner.

it's much better when i find fast guys without such "bully" attitude, it will mean close, fast races wih many passes...where of course a pass doesn't mean crash because of stubborness

my opinion? it's people like ayrton and tristan that need to take overtaking and being overtaken lessons...

PS i never raced with you guys, so i may be wrong about you but as you depict your behaviour, you have a bad attitude IMHO
Aston - Strange white lines (road paintings)

on aston (many corners) and also on one kyoto corner, i found that ugly deformations of the road white line...the very strange thing is that it is huge but i never noticed when racing from cockpit (focused on race).

at start i thought it was a graphic card problem, because i firstly noticed on a very low end system with a very cheap graphic card (intel maybe), but then i verified it occurs also on a very recent pc with an asus nvidia 6600 and also on i friend's pc wich has an ati card (don't know the model).

looking with attention it seems that it happens on every aston's connection between different layouts where textures are mapped into triangles making them skew very much.

other tracks seems fine.

Hopefully we get some more people driving FO8 with this thread.

i choosed your server, only because after beign wrecked all day, i saw the sccc tag -> sccc it's a guarrantee for clean and fun races...always!

Quote from XCNuse :how is that anything related to internet, you must be confused....

online, it sees you as not moving, so you get kicked to spectator for not moving; but it knows your in the pits, or atleast it can figure it out that your getting your car repaired, because LFS even says "so and so has entered the pits" so its a program problem, not ISP or anything lag or internet related

i understand very well, for you everything is normal...the "invisible car" bug causes you to be forced into spectator mode as soon as the winner crosses the finish line, otherwise you would have completed your pits...

maybe i wasnt clear about the fact that i don't believe the story about "isp bug"...it's an lfs bug, i agree

Quote from Mauni :I tried setting up FO8 on Westhill server last week. Results were poor. Spent over hour our there 2 other players joined and other left as soon as he came Maybe I'll have to give it another try.

one of those 2 players was me!!! so unfortunate that i had to go few minutes later, also i was a real noob with fo8 because since patch u no one drives it anymore...i don't even made a setup for it!!!

it's a real shame that lfs servers tends to standardize, always the same combos, many server with the same combo...ufff, so boring...

Quote from XCNuse :okay, so im racing here at sim-racer.net, its final lap and i decide to pit last lap just for the heck of it, anyways, the first place person also pitted and finished the race when i was halfway through pitting, then all of the sudden i get kicked to spectator mode for "not moving" well..... sorry that i couldnt move since i was stuck in pits

seems kinda unfair if you ask me

yes its not real to pit last lap, but that is still something that should be fixed

i'm sorry for you, i know very well this bug (only because i found out the cause): the server at some time stopped to manage your udp position packets, so as soon the winner crossed finish line, the server thought you were not moving so it forced you inot spectator mode (because obviously that server had this option enebled).

it has been mentioned few times, but scawen argued that this is not an lfs bug but it's your isp bug...the sad thing is that this bug is very subtle and many people don't figure it out (even myself that i already know, i spend some time before i figure it out when it happens).

btw since patch U, maybe luck maybe code more stable, it seems more rare to happen: to me happened twice since patch U.

another sympthom of this bug is when it seems that everyone crashes at you without respect...they simply don't see you and they are not affected by the crash...only you!

i hope more people come out for this subtle bug, so that we may convince scawen it is a lfs bug

Quote from Ball Bearing Turbo :
In fact, I'm convinced Westhill backwards is the way that track should be driven. It's got so much personality in reverse it's by far my favorite track altogether.

yes you're right! westhill reversed is much more interesting, each corner is much more challenging especially the first corner and the chicane

it's a shame that sever admins often forgets that we have reverse configurations on each track, sometimes like for westhill they're better than the forward ones

Quote from DEVIL 007 :Maybee....I was thinking about it and tried it but it looks then too "plastic".
Did you try it in game?

Anyway it doesnt mean I am ending with 1 result

EDITED:
I tried to smooth it a bit but I am not sure about the result.
Honey...please try it and tell me your opinion.

Smoothed test version of the Blackwood curbs.
BWcurbs1.dds

smoother are better imo, but still i would smooth more, maybe playing with the shadow/highlights function of photoshop, you could do it without making it blurry.

also i forgot to tell you (if possible) to increase "the resolution" of tarmac, without AA/AF it look s like it have less resolution (i.e seems like a 1024 texture somehow), if you point attention at your screenies the comparison between the curbs look and the tarmac look should explain better what i'm trying to say: the curb look very detailed (very good ), but tarmac seems a bit less.

please keep in mind that i always have AA/AF turned off, so our judgements are obviously differently biased
