Wonder how they are going to make the cars lighter if they are going to keep the hybrid powertrain and not penalize heavier taller drivers...

Quote from NotAnIllusion :Formulae, which doesn't use combustion engines is centered entirely around energy conservation in races. The hybrid technology used by the current crop of LMP1s is very cool, however.

Energy conservation has always been a part of motor racing. Doesn't really matter if it is battery charge or fuel that is being saved as the best method for saving energy is the same for both (coast at the end of straights). What hybrids do however is that they divide the power into effectively two phases. One is just the internal combustion engine which is used to drive the car out of corners when the car is grip limited. After the tire grip exceeds the engine power the electric power is turned on which only adds straightline speed. That's the 2nd phase. The car is only able to use full power when it is already traction limited.

When the cars only have electric motors (no hybrids) all that electric power is available on corner exit which means managing the engine power and wheelspin out of corners will be a thing once again.

The biggest problem with drs is that it is effectively press a button and get ahead of the driver in front. In spain after most of the drs passes the passing driver could return back to the driving line before the next turn. If drs really needs to stay then at least make it so that it automatically turns off once you are side by side with other driver. So isntead of creating effortless and boring automatic position switching the drs gives the driver behind just enough speed to counter the dirty air effect after the last corner.

As far as tech rules go I think the "bad in everyway" hybrids are the worst thing to happen to f1 and racing in the last 100 years. I don't even know what is it that forces tech teams to use those heavy hybrid systems in the cars (probably rules...)? They don't even give enough power to offset their own weight penalty. They are not even worth their own weight in a racing car.

Not to mention hybrid as technology is more boring than the knitting world finals dubbed in sign language. I've actually started looking forward to fully electric racing cars. No longer is the hybird energy just some button you press after exiting a corner to get more straightline speed. There is no deceiving trickery with the power numbers. What it says on the tin is what you get on the driven wheels. Not some momentary peak power number that the car can only do for some 5 seconds per lap while the rest of the time it has some 600hp and not 750hp. Not to mention the lift and coasting to recharge the boredom filled batteries...

With full electric engines the full power is at least available all the time. Driving out from the corners and getting on full power actually means getting on full power. Not using lawnmowers to drive the car out of corners and then pressing a button to turn on the electric motor on the straightaway.

How too fix f1:
- get rid of hybrids (expensive, boring, bad for racing, too much speed of the car is the hands of the engine makers and not the teams. Rbr is totally useless with the renault while merc teams dominate)
- have engines that make f1 worthwhile power (use biofuels, mcdonalds fats or measure the co2 from the exhausts.
- more downforce from the under side of the car, less from the wings
- something needs to be done to lenghten the braking distances
- make the driver's safety cell standardized. Standard cog, standard inertias, standard size so that driver size becomes totally meaningless. For example driver+cell should weigh 110kg
- before each racing weekend all cars must be shown to the public without any bodywork so the people can see different things of the cars

In rf2 driving the roadster against competitive ai in the rain is just amazing. Much better than the ktm in assetto for example. It is the same thing with rf2 as it was rf1. There are few good mods and loads of shite. With ac it is a lot easier when all the cars basically drive well out of the box.

How is the career mode in pcars? Is it fun and challenge or is it just a pintless grind? How is the netcode? Worth getting just to drive around lemans in the harkness of the cold wet night in a car that is supposed to be able to only that for 24 hours once a year?

The maldonado incident was again one of those wtf moments for me. It is your team mate and he still squeezed him there harder than bernie would grab toto's ass in the backroom. For no reason. He already had the outside line, he was ahead of grosjean and had the inside line into the next corner and would have been able to hold on the outside and get better exit out of that corner.

Yet maldonado was able to make that into an incident which effectively ended his race. Grosjean had imho all the right for the space there...

Quote from PhilS13 :Just to clarify some things...I understand that sinbad was saying that current "top pro" drivers should move into historic racing.

What I was trying to say is once you have driven an insanely quick modern car, racing a 60s touring car will be boring. It might be fun on a random event with no preparation and a less than ideal setup... but put them in a serious historic championship and they will somehow stop fooling around, make the cars behave, find the (boring) limit and the fun of historic cars sliding all over the place will be gone. The fact that bias-ply tires operate at a higher slip angle is not enough to impress me and it certainly doesn't impress current best drivers in the world.

I didn't mean normal as in my-mom-normal, they are impressive drivers of course

If somehow all the current top drivers are already in historic events then nothing changes...the videos are great to watch because it is not a serious championship and it is okay to fool around. Make that a serious international series and no more fun, just slow cars.

Edit: Oh and yes....modern GT is ridiculously too easy to drive. Agree 100% on that

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cawBXWWgqCI

I don't think 60s touring cars would be boring at all. The f1 drivers in those days used to do lots of touring car races too. Jim Clark did many races racing cortinas. And the f1 cars in those days were the fastest non winged race cars ever. And he still did drive the cortinas a lot.

The thing about old cars compared to new cars is not just about the old car being slower and easier to slide. Because the old cars have less grip they also need less power to overcome that grip. In comparison every modern race car is insanely over tired to the point that getting wheelspin above 2nd gear is practically impossible. Second thing is that becuase of lack of aero the old cars generate lift. This means corners that are easily flatout in modern cars become non-flatout corners.

Then there are things like driving technique. Heel toeing a 1960s porsche around relatively twisty circuit leave very little room for mistakes. In such tightly contested series one misshift will drop you down in the grid at least couple of positions each time. Do it too harshly and the engine goes, the gearbox breaks or the clutch wears out. To handle that some drivers may even double clutch on downshifts. Compare that to modern race car where you have super fast steering (hardly need to even turn the wheel more than 90 degrees), 2 pedals, paddleshifters and all kinds of shift lights, delta time displays and pit radios.

Driving the cars and keeping them on the track takes a lot more effort in an old car simply because there is alot more things you need to do correctly. We would see a lot more driving errors and the best of the best would not only be super fast but able to do those times consistently. And the best drivers would also need to have mechanical sympathy. In modern racing it is already completely unheard of that in order to guarantee a good finish the driver shifts earlier for example. Not to mention managing the gearbox or the brakes....

At first glance it looks like something a very excited 12 year old would make. But when you think about it all makes sense. It goes with the 90s style at maximum. The webpage is typical webpage from the late 90s when everybody were making one. The style, the tables based design, the scrolling text and the random gif animations everywhere. And the random pricing policy:
http://steamcommunity.com/groups/mysummercar/discussions/0/617329150705025798/

It is all put together so well that it almost looks like exactly what it is. Or looks nothing like it at all depending whether you see it as a tongue in cheek adventure in pc game making or just random dude sharing his badly deformed baby with the world.

I think it is brilliant. But I like dolan comicks to.

I'd like to make a sequental gearbox for the car which requires throttle lift but not clutch (like ff1600 in nkpro) but it is not possible so the car now has 6 speed sequental gearbox with automatic throttle cut. I also found some setup fixes which reduce the understeer... but the car still needs new front geometry as the one there is now is from the jag...

Strangely enough the heavier road going version with solid rear axle is a bit more fun to drive... I need to remove grip and add more power methinks...

This is how the road going versions looks like now:
http://oi57.tinypic.com/i1e3w0.jpg
(very unfinished, lots of floating parts, needs new mirrors, headlights, wheels, tires etc...)

And the trackday version:

Much less time now to work on the mods than I had with the jag Frown

A sale would probably be a good idea. Nobody never mentions lfs anymore anywhere so a sale and the little update together could in theory make it interesting proposition for people who don't have lfs yet.

Something like 50% off would be nice and would guarantee a mention in most places where sims are discussed. LFS is pretty old and dead anyways so asking for full price for a 2008 game doesn't really sell all the well.

Quote from ACCAkut :was on the server for a minute, then lost connection

we restarted the server do change track.

We'll probably do some more racing on the weekend, maybe on the fair factory or troy's server Smile

I'll see if the car needs some work, probably the dampers. I won't promise anything though.

Quote from troy :Sry couldn't get on today, will make sure to try and give it a go on the weekend

If you check out the car make sure you drive on the semis. The slicks are there for reasons I don't remember...

When you drive over a kerb the car kinda catches the direction of the kerb and you get a violent change of direction. Silverstone and mugello suffer from it more while others suffer less. Apparently cars can be adjusted to almost get rid of it by reducing damping and spring rate of the tire. The mazda 78787b does this really well and in that car you can use the kerbs fine but try to drive the z4 gt3 (I think) using the same line and you get those snap spins when the kerb snaps your car sideways.

Quote from ACCAkut :VW has an engine originally meant for the 1.6 inline-4 world formula, the one running in WRC. But I don't see any VW brand in F1. Audi is at home in WEC, the only brand fitting in F1 imo could be Lamborghini, as it has no competition model in any motorsport iirc (is there a GT3 version of the Huracan planned? I only know of the Trophéo cup)

There is a gt3 huracan.
