I hope you can get this going the way you like. You might consider using micro-switches instead of regular buttons. They require less force to stay de-pressed so this will help keep your shifter from coming out of gear.
As far as the wiring for the usb gamepad they might all be different. You also need to consider a lot of USB controllers use buttons wire in series.. kinda. Not sure how to explain it. Example: Lets say on circuit the there are five buttons, but only 3 wires to terminate to. So when you press button one it terminates wire 1 and 2 together to make the usb send button 1 and button 2 is 1 and 3 wires terminated together to make the usb chip send button 2. Kind of confusing, but I bet that is what you will be up against. I would recomment buying a USB chip for custom controllers. You should get a wiring scamatic with it.
You are also going to need a way to make the shifter stay in position. You might try putting the button on the below the pivot point of the shifter handle or at the bottom of the shifter. It will be easier to keep the button de-pressed there. This is how the Lighting SST's buttons work.
I installed the new drivers last night and I really like them so far. To me the feedback feels 3x more crisp and has excellent feel. I thought the regular DFP drivers were fine, but having the increased feedback is a real treat. The buttons are a plus too. And I too for some reason set the horn button first. The up/down and left/right dial is a great feature. I bound them to arrow keys. Perfect for pit strat and live anit-roll/brake settings. Though, the dial feels a bit cheap and doesn't respond like I would want it too. Better then having it do nothing.
It wasn't valid. I know because I have done the job he does before.
Here's the deal... If you put a lot of hard work into something it can benefit you in different ways. What this that guy said applies to his own situation. And I'm guessing you don't either. Most people don't have this luxury including myself. I'm sorry if I am too typical for you. Really the guy should have said nothing in the first place. Then I wouldn't have felt it needed to defend someone honor...what little good that does here.

I don't want to come across as a prick either... But your business, while still being technology based, is not like anything like a developed software system that LFS is. Even though it isn't "fully" developed, enough work has been done that for short periods of time it can maintain it's self. Probably for even longer then the time Scawen took off recently. The idea behind creating such a system is that you don't have to constantly jack with it to make it work. Seeing that Scawen could take a period of time off and still come back to working a software system is a testament to LFS's ingenuity.
So to sum it up: LFS didn't grind to a halt. I never once heard of the master server going down and nobody could connect during the past month and a half. If you did this however your business would dry up. You have to make sales and perform consistent services to maintain an income. LFS revenue could be made while the devs are sleeping, taking a moment to go to the bathroom or even.. moving house. Not forever though. Just short periods of time. With all respect that can be given, you comparison is flawed.
Outdated in a current technology sense in comparison to DX10 and hardware.. yeah. I guess you could say it already is.
But in terms of innovative software design I don't believe LFS is behind by any means. The core of LFS may be ahead of it's time. The problem of what we think is dated we base on what nvidia and large development firms are telling use is up to date.
It's come to a point in online simulations and mostly the 'gaming' market where this has become almost out of control. Evey body and their momma is trying to make an online game for money most the time boasting their revolutionary graphics and the technology used to make it. That and how many people they can shove in a server, then call it playable. Problem is most of them are like Super-Models with drug problems, social disorders and STDs. Nice to look at, but easy to forget about.
Like I said though. The modern graphics technologies aren't in LFS so it might look out dated. But I will stand to my opinion that the core of it is beyond what other companies can do. And it isn't lack of money being the reason they can't. It's the fear of lack of making money because the time involved in being at the real cutting edge of game play. Game play is more important then the technology making it appear on your screen. The core is the defining factor. Take a look at Quake Live for example. They tried the updated graphics route with Quake 4. More people still played Quake 3. It was still the Pro FPS of chose for those that take it to that level. So they picked Quake 3 back up and turned it into Quake Live. It is still in beta, but it is awesome and will be free for all to sign up when it is released. Quake 3 is a 10 year old piece of software. But you can't deny what works. ID found this out and acted accordingly.
More developers should realize the obvious truth that re-inventing the wheel isn't all it's cracked up to be. Thank god LFS can see this.
Exactly what I have found in myself. I started getting faster when I conditioned myself not to tense up and overthink things. Though, that frame of mind is hard to stay in all the time. I often manage to make a PB while holding down a button and talking not even realizing I was doing well.. Problem with that is I don't remember what I did and the shock of better my times, without extra thought normally slows me down again.
I also find that looking to the spot you want to go and not breaking eye contact with that spot will take you to that spot. So if I'm looking around, I postion the car in the same way I am looking.

You see....for a while everyone screamed global warming....in the 70's it was global cooling..... They have since started singing "climate change" as their new slogan for placing controls over the populations.
I'm not involved in any kind of motorsport besides LFS and some other Sims in the past. I drive a oversized 4x4 tahoe and work in a cube. If anyone would like to discredit me for that please go right ahead. I've left myself wide open with that statement. You can take whatever I have to say however you want to.
Here are my thoughts. I think limted setups can serve a purpose. I want to find out what that is like with the Scirocco. This should be a good measure of what it will bring to LFS.
At the same time though racing and competitive motorsports is about taking what you have and making the best of it to win. At this point in LFS we have a lot of setup options. Any driver that doesn't look at what they have and use it to win doesn't really want to win. I for one don't like Locked Diffs, but in some cases I'll use it if the purpose serves me. If tomorrow the setup options change entireley in LFS then we are still in the same situation we are in now. What I mean is we have to take what we have and use it to win like we have always had to do.
I second that. I don't see a reason to make it a miata with licensing. But an inspired car to add to LFS. It is used here in the USA and I'm sure in other parts of the world for spec racing and club events. I believe because of it's real world exceptance as a race vehicle and it's affordable in real life would make it a great addition to LFS.
Personally I would like to see the LFS implementation of this type of car rather then real world licensing. I think tracks like FE Club, South Citry Chicane and Blackwood would be a real treat in this type of vehicle.
I haven't been around here long at all. A little over a year. I spent most of the time on the forums observing until recently. What I have observed by the actions of the LFS project team confirms the bold statements or words above are big part of the reason why LFS is such a success. It is obvious that your expectations of quality for LFS are higher then most of the people that have purchased it. This is the only way in which a great product is produced. You don't to answer to a boss or company that has invested money and is tapping their foot waiting on a return. This is the freedom to be great and you have already paid the price to get there. I can tell you simply love what you do and when the time is right you do it with whole heart....and I'm sure some head banging on the keyboard. But that comes with the territory.
All I have to offer is my thanks for taking the path you have chosen for LFS and promise to support your teams efforts financially as services or products are released. After I discovered LFS was a project backed by only 3 people my admiration for what LFS is was put to a new level of appreciation.
My only question for you is:
How do you find the guts to put it all out on the line and work for yourself? That is such a hard choice to make.
Thank You for your time and this amazing product. Please don't ever give in to the pressure. You have earned the privilege to operate in the way you see fit.
This is truly a well built piece of software. I am very impressed.
I have it connected from a 800mhz /512 RAM pc on a 300kbs upsteam connection in Texas USA to our 500 dedicated server in U.K. There is hardly any lag when sending/receiving requests from a client. I also have a small 10 player server on the same box as AIRIO. Runs well so far.
I am going to see about some php scripting for a website next.
The way I see is like this: When Coke tried to change their recipe for Coca-Cola in the 80's it was a horrible, horrible idea. Eventually they were forced to revert back to their old ways. You see company's do it all the time. They get to point where they are too big and have poor communication leading to bad decisions. This strength in size and numbers inevitably hurts them in the long run. They are either forced out of business or forced to "downsized" (<- We here this a lot) to same size as they were before or smaller. Look at the financial system here in the US... bailouts because they are too big to fail, but if they were allowed to fail they would either disappear or change to fit the needs of the economy. Now I'm not saying that creating new positions for development of LFS would be bad, but it seems it would change the current layout that works for the devs and for us the consumers even though some of us can't see it. I haven't seen any bad decisions from the LFS team. The way that LFS is produced works well. Period.
I tell you what. You could really have a good time and benefit from working some seconds off those PB times of your's. We can always use faster drivers in the community and are more welcome then.. well.. whatever you are attempting to accomplish here..
There are lots of things yet to accomplish with LFS.
BSOD's?? Is that like when someone puts their hands around your neck and....
I setup a Mythbuntu DVR in our living room and installed a frontend player on the wifey's laptop to stream live TV over the wireless. Pretty nice and it works a to better then I thought it would. Even better she loves it and I got some seriously nice BSOD for setting it up.
I know about Delays. More specifically I know about delays in programming and testing of development software. In comparison the programs I write for web pages are much, much more simple then the development of a functional Simulated Vehicle. But in more ways then not, the same. Not to say I am on the level of programming the LFS team is on... not even close. Even something as simple as a php scripting can take time to develop and suffers delays because unknown obstacles. Most of the time these obstacles require very minimum work to actually correct, but the time spent finding the fix can easily take tens if not hundred of times longer then the actions of inputting the correct information. Example: I spent 4 fours just yesterday trying to move a application written 9 years ago from our live environment to a test environment for modifications. The fix was a 'true' instead of a 'false' in the configuration file for the web server. Took literally a minute to fix and hours to figure out. In that 4 fours I could have probably made the entire modifications for the upgrade and been testing for bugs.
My Point is this:
This is the scale that all of us need to consider when blasting, bitch, crying, moaning, flaming and what have you when a new feature doesn't show up on time. I can't think of one time when anything programming related is on time and perfect when it gets there. If a person makes it, it is flawed. The LFS devs just hold them selfs to a higher standard then most do to increase the quality a notch above the rest. So it takes a bit longer get done. I'm just happy to see a software development team not taking shortcuts and giving into pressure.
