Quote from Electrik Kar :I just kinda skimmed through the thread, but Jertje, I'd like to go online with you sometime. I haven't got a computer right now, but a new system is arriving tomorrow, and I should have FSX up and running shortly after. I've only briefly mucked around with it, but even some casual soaring or something might be some fun with LFS friends. Nice suggestion

You got it, just pm me

To the vatsimmers:

I had the pleasure of connecting to and listening in on the Los Angeles ATC yesterday-night, and I was really amazed at the level of dedication and professionalism. I'm not sure if it's for me, quite frankly I may try an easy 50km flight in quiet airspace someday, but it all seems very intimidating, although it really is intriguing.

Here's a short sample of the stuff that was going on yesterday, for those wondering what this is about:

Idiots really. Childish hooliganism can stay in and around the football stadiums as far as I'm concerned. Obsolete, pre-historic remains of pack-instinct. An interesting subject tough, hooliganism. Quite interesting to analyse how our ancestors may have acted when out competing with other groups for wildlife and land.

I wasn't suggesting hogging the simulated communication lines with idle chat, just any form of in-game communication that doesn't disturb 'official' communication ;p

So just for clarification, listening and talking to the ATC is done via the in-game communications, FFInn, or Teamspeak? I have an account, got to the point where I was in a game, and in an FFInn server, but there was no chatter. Although this was perhaps because I was at Schiphol, which I guess is not as popular as I'd hoped it would be

Edit: I do realise how terrifying it must be to request taxi/takeoff clearance or whateverfor the first time though, I look forward to it!
Is it also a good place to have a friendly chat and meet some people though? Or is it all 'work' and no play? :>

Quote from buedi :... then maybe you should join Vatsim.
These guys are very professional and maybe a bit nuts (but aren't we simmers all nuts in some way?). Just click on "Visual Display" under Network and you get an Idea what's going on there. If you have X-Plane, FS<pick a number> or another supported Sim just join a Airport and listen to the Traffic. It's like in reality... really sick
Ah, and this could look like Statistics from real Airports / Flights... but it's Vatsim too: Vataware.

Although that looks quite epic, after reading a bit and trying to set up the program, I concluded that it is the most confusing setup process in the world. I'd probably have better luck constructing a nuclear weapon with instructions in Russian.

Just to get the right idea: I have to install the program to be able to listen in on the ATC, correct?

Edit: And I'll try to get my hands on FS9 asap ;p

Good read for those willing to take a step into proper flight simming

Just to get the point across: although I do want to have regular old fun, I don't want to fly around and crash into buildings at random, I actually want to do some proper flying ;D

Meanwhile... anyone interested? I'm reading a lot on other sims, which is interesting (X-Plane looks quite nice as a simulation), but obtaining the other software and leaving FSX is a step too soon ;-)

Quote from LFSn00b :Meh i want FSX How good it is?

Well, I don't know how much into flightsims you are, but it's more or less FS9 with more complexity in the landscape, and some more demanding graphical features like wingflexing and all sorts of movable parts

The expansion has carrier take-offs/landings with the F/A-18.

Other than that, it's just another flightsim with updated graphics, and a bunch of really fun and challenging missions. Online mode has ATC support, so players can assume the role of tower and give headings and approaches to other players, although I have not tried this myself

As for the screenshots: I'd have to reboot into *Vista to get some proper screens (DX10 and all), and so I'll do that tomorrow-morning, any requests?

*More of an excuse, I'm busy with other games right now =)

Hey all,

I've been getting into FSX since I recently obtained a PC capable of actually running it properly, and I was wondering if there are any people here willing to go do some flying online? I know it's possible to just go online in any server, but I figured it would be more fun with some chaps from the LFS community, going up and just flying around a bit; perhaps some 'sigh-seeing', formation flying or just island hopping or whatever

I don't know how popular flight sims are in general (although I did find a few threads covering other aspects of FSX) but I'd like to try getting some people together (or just two ;p)

Anyhoo, I have a vent server available for chatting if anyone is interested, let me know.

Hmmm, noone received the wheel yet? You guys are going to have to take one for the team and pull a couple of all-nighters to properly wear those things out

Quote from Jakg :Erm, no.

FRAPS has a little anit-piracy trick - you can't install the pirate version and then the demo, or the licensed version.

In short - pwnt.

Licensed version still works after the anti-piracy thingy, I think it's just that you can't reinstall the pirated version, or the demo. I could be wrong though, it's been a couple of years since I bought fraps

I think some people are just a bit worried that they've spent quite a sum of money on a (great) unique product in the market in terms of price/performance, and now there's a competitor entering the market which has some improvements to offer, but also seemingly a couple of flaws (which are attacked heavily in turn). Is it just cognitive dissonance and is everyone suddenly trying to justify their purchase of the G25? I really don't see a reason for people to attack a wheel they haven't touched yet.

Perhaps I shouldn't get involved anyway, since I'm a happy cheapskate with a DF :P

I just hope people will give the wheel a fair chance. It seems like it's getting shot down just for wearing an expensive badge, even though the wheel itself seems to be of good quality. That youtube review was a bit biased nonetheless, and I'd definitely like to hear more about the strength of the FFB from proper simmers!

The headshot bug is seriously annoying, yes.
Coupled with the psycho physics and weird AI there were some interesting shoot-outs I had: about 150m away from a gunners' nest, I shoot a guy in the head, blood gushes out of it into the air, the guy stands up and stutters in his place, mounts the gun again, doesn't shoot back, and I repeat the process 10-15 times before he actually dies.

Blood coming from his head, 15 times.

I'm no surgeon, doctor or field-medic, but I'm fairly sure that a korean with a freshly fired bullet lodged in his skull isn't a happy dandy korean, even less so when there are about a dozen of them stuck in his cranium.

Meh.

It's not just the game that looks pretty (or not, I did find it a bit disappointing at times too, but I can't use very high as I don't want to install vista) but the engine itself is really quite a masterpiece.
Now, I usually don't go fanboi on engines, and I was incredibly underwhelmed by the first Cryengine, but this one is really pushing a few boundaries; especially the procedural motion warping got me excited. It makes characters look very natural when they're walking up or down slopes, or standing on rocks with one foot higher than the other.

Most or all of the features are probably possible in other engines as well, but I haven't really noticed the advanced character animation features yet in games, so I guess it's a nice step forward

Zero Punctuation is absolutely spot on, especially about the vehicles and that damn flight sequence. They could not have made anything less intuitive and annoying to fly if they tried.

Overall it really is a stunning game, and the suit is a great gameplay-element, but the shooting itself, the AI (don't even try to tell me that it's any good, it's horrible and buggy and overrated) and the structure of the game is just mediocre. I did love the experience of the game though, as the story was unfolded very cinematically. I was certainly enjoying the game on the whole because of its presentation, but there are much better shooters out there.

I still get 50-60 FPS on the back of the grid with 20AI with a roughly similar system, although slightly faster through OCing.

E6750 @ 3.2 Ghz
2 Gigs of Corsair PC6400
8800GT (OC version by BFG)

This is at 1600x1200 with AA and AF enabled in the NVidia configuration, so I really doubt that 30fps pretty good at the back of the pack. I would install the latest drivers, but as people already said: the game is quite CPU dependent when running with stupid amounts of AI drivers, and I don't really know what the Q6600 is like in LFS.

Missions include following your wingman in an F/A-18 Hornet (your nav system is broken) and landing it on an aircraft carrier, it's really great

I got it recently with my new system, but haven't really gotten into it yet since there are a lot of other games to play, but I'll get round to it later
